So as we close out the year, what are everyone's personal picks for their game of the year? Since I made the post, I will start.

Heavy Rain - PS3

Never has a game pulled me into a story as much as this one. You literally live the lives of these 4 people from the simplest, mundane tasks, to life threatening decisions. It quite literally is a movie in its own right, but a movie you have direct control over and one which the outcome of your actions will determine. Every scene in this story is well done and at no point do you feel like you are simply going through the motions. Every scene will get your emotions and blood pumping because you care about these characters. All those mundane tasks you do for your characters really puts you in their shoes and makes you feel for them. This is one of the few games that took a chance doing something different and they did it in a beautiful fashion. This is a true artistic masterpiece that gamers of all backgrounds and skill levels can enjoy.

Runner up - Castlevania Lords of Shadow - 360, PS3

Its easy to write this off as a God of War clone, but there is so much more to it than that. Yes the combat is quick, bloody, and fun much like the God of War games, but aside from that we have a fresh new character to the Castlevania series who is very well done. Over the course of the game we get brilliant narration by Patrick Stewart and we chart Gabriel's decent into madness and anger. Still over the course of it all he still remains faithful to the brotherhood and even minor little things like crossing himself every time he checks a dead body are noticed and appreciated. Lastly, the art on this game is gorgeous. There are scenes and shots in this game that are simply breathtaking.

My choices are quite personal, and I can't guarantee that anyone else will agree with them...

1: Game Dev Story - English version on iOS. It has been almost seventeen years since I last got interested in a business simulation. (I really liked the SNES/Genesis game Aerobiz.) It has an art style I really liked, compelling gameplay, amusing writing, and just enough challenge.

2: Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side DS - English fan translated version. I had about thirteen years of fan-created hype with the Sakura Taisen series, and felt that the translated version of ST5 was decent but flawed. I had been aware of the Tokimemo series for about eleven years, and felt that TMGS was excellent. Unlike the good VN/average SRPG gameplay in ST5, TMGS focused heavily on the gameplay, so in essence I was creating my main character's own story. Furthermore, I found the gameplay fairly challenging, and the writing was often funny. Finally, it's a miracle that the fan translation project began in spring 2010, and finished up just days ago.

3: Pac-Man Championship Edition DX on XBLA. I discovered the first Pac-Man CE last year, and liked it quite a bit. This new edition is just as entertaining... surreal yet compelling gameplay, and lots of variety.

Heavy Rain was pretty sweet, no doubt. The story was epic, and like a good detective story all the clues fit when you know what the solution is.

I'm not sure if it'll get any GOTY hype, but my favorite game this year has been Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The single player game, while lacking a real deep story, has satisfying gameplay if you enjoyed the previous two games. The multiplayer is waaaaay fun and incredibly pretty well-balanced. It's a crazy game of cat-and-mouse where while you hunt your mouse, there are other cats hunting you (and you don't know which cats are hunting you either). I only played for a couple hours but I had a lot of fun with the online.

Well this is mostly based on personal opinion anyway. I'm sure that most people have never played the games dorkatlarge mentioned, but its always cool to hear the opinions of others.

I'm sure AC:B will get some GOTY hype being that it was one of the last major titles released this year so it'll be fresh in the minds of a lot of people. Plus it is a major release and has been well reviewed by most everyone. And I have heard great things about the innovative multiplayer they are toting. Personally I would much rather see a game like AC:B get it than Halo which was largely more of the same I felt and offered little in the way of innovation in SP or multiplayer.

I would make horrible suggestions for GOTY as most of the games I bought this year were sequels and basically all Xbox games. This includes Call of Duty 26, Halo: We had better weapons before the conflict escalated in a game set before the others yet coming 9 years later, Crackup 2, and BioShortened campaign due to as of yet still buggy multiplayer.

Two.

Agreed. Halo, while pretty fun, is not particularly mindblowing or innovative. It adds a competent story to the same gameplay that's been there pretty much the entire series. Reach is the only game from the series I've played extensively, and I still thought it was pretty bland and boring. Well, that and frustrating because shields are a terrible idea for multiplayer. Seriously, a headshot is pretty much an instant kill regardless of what weapon you're using in most other games, but not in Halo, oh no. Casual gamers can only play Infection or else it's pretty much an exercise in bashing your head into a wall because you can never kill anyone.

My personal favorites so far have been Metroid: Other M, Vanquish, Mass Effect 2, and Blazblue: Continuum Shift. Of those four, my GOTY probably goes to Other M for leaving the biggest impression on me.

From what I've been seeing around the internet is a lot of people love RDR, and throw in the fact there's some DLC packs for it, it seems like it is a serious front runner at least.

But it's all subjective anyway. The "real" GOTY is just decided by a collaboration of reviews from successful neckbeards, which at heart are no more valid than the opinion of any given internet neckbeard.

Translation: Taking "GOTY" stuff seriously is pants-on-head impaired stuff.

But since we're on this very subjective topic, my picks would be either Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Bayonetta, Vanquish. Leaning Toward S&P: Star Successor, for its replay value and non-stop arcade-like action. You're literally dead if you blink during the later stages, and that's just on Normal difficulty. But like all of Treasure's games (except for that fight against the crazy old wizard guy in Guardian Heroes who juggled you with lightning+ice spam until you died several times over), it's completely fair, and every hit you take is your own durn fault.

As for letdowns of the year: No More Heroes 2 and Metroid: Other Moeblob. Suda51 and Yoshio Sakamoto, respectively, must have taken extensive studying in How To Ruin Your Franchise 101. Congratulations to both of them.

Soundtrack of the year easily goes to Nier, IMHO.
Just listen. Like seriously.

Okay, c'mon, guy, you do this with every single topic you post in. If you can't realize it's a basic assumption in all of these threads that the majority of posts are based on subjective opinion then you're in the wrong internets. Just toss your opinion out there and move on.

For me its Red Dead Redemption. For single player action, its incredible! I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the open plains of the wiiilllld west! I was distracted by so much in that game. Once I got my horse I was able to do whatever I wanted, shoot birds, rabbits, wolves, bears, coyotes, skin their furs and take the meat and use it in exchange for goods, I can go bounty hunting for big bucks, and I could choose my own path if I wanted to be a hero or a bandit depending on my actions. For some reason I was attached to my first horse. We bonded and went on great missions until he died. Yes the game is that great. When the sun sets it gets dangerous, horse robbers, bandits will come out of nowhere, and in one instance I had to shoot a guy for attempting to kill a prostitute. The transformation from day to night is done beautifully as well as the music. It took me a while to get use to the "dead eye," but once you do, its worth using! I got it for $30 on Amazon. It was worth it!

Second place is Demon's Souls for the PS3....WOW! Who knew death would be a pain in the butt, but you know what thats fine with me! This is a game that I suggest you try. Seriously, blood on the floor that tells you how a certain person died, incredible online interaction, WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT DEMON'S SOULS!

My fave mobile gaming app is...yes, ANGRY BIRDS! The physics in that is fun and the challenges get tougher and tougher as you progress in the game. Plus the cartoon characters of the pigs and birds are cute (I like cute things). You get regualr green pigs, helmet pig, mustache pig, and king pig! And the birds have special abilities depending on which one you get in a stage. I like the big red bird.

This year was really lacking for me in the console gaming department not that there wasn't some amazing games this year but I did manage to try out a lot and honestly Red Dead Redemption impressed me the most this year just such a great sandbox and honestly the only game this year that took it a step up. But still this year wasn't that impressive overall. But RDR would be my choice.

I like the 25 days of XMAS. I love how they have a new stage open up for each day of Christmas. I got the Halloween one as a bonus as well when I purchased Seasons. I still need to finish the regular version too. But hands down that game is like crack to me, especially trying to get those golden eggs!

Well I wouldn't say GOTY (althought it probably was my favorite of the year)

But I would say most underappreciated game of the year was Arc Rise Fantasia.

Yes yes, voices sucked, BUT every thing else was pretty solid. Fun turn based battle system, good story (it's a jrpg, so don't no rant abouts "linear or cliched", likable characters, and surprisingly difficult bosses (It's actually very easy to get a game over with the first boss battle.)

I really loved Arc Rise Fantasia, and it is personally my favorite game of this year hands down.

Finished Nier this morning. Amazing game. Incredible story and plot twists. GotY candidate, as far as I'm concerned... though I'd personally still put Sin & Punishment: Star Successor above it.

I'll have to look into Nier. Been getting bored of the mainstream a bit, but with my CPU up and running I wonder how much I'll be able to touch my Xbox in the coming months.

The first half might bore you with all the fetch-questing, and the fishing minigame sucks (protip: to catch the fish you need, go to the largest beach in the seaside town. You'll see what I mean when you get there. You only have to do it once anyway.) but keep in mind that you don't have to do any fetch-questing for random townsfolk or other NPCs; just the main quest's first half has quite a bit of mandatory fetching for the more "involved" characters. (example: like, at one point, going to the library to get a book for your daughter, or at another point, going to search for a certain someone who's gone missing, before being able to obtain a certain something you need) The second half of the game is amazing (as is the stuff near the end of the first half leading up to it), though, and every New Game+ gives you more and more insight and endings. The game also pays homage to many genres, including puzzle games, survival/horror (thankfully without tank controls), "bullet hell" arcade shooters, side-scrolling platformers, old-school text adventures (complete with a bit of fourth wall breakage), and even a hilarious Legend of Zelda reference. Best of all, New Game+ spits you right back out at the crucial halfway point in the game. No having to relive the first half at all. (there's at least two New Game+'s, and four endings) And again, the story is amazing. The stuff you find out near the end will cause your brain to melt. Lastly... DAT SOUNDTRACK. (my personal favorite track from the game, from a very epic boss fight). The game got a lot of flack from most reviewers because the combat is so-so, the graphics are alright at best, the enemy variety is a bit lackluster, and again, the tedium of the first half.

Don't want to "viral advertise" but the game really doesn't get enough love, and I wanted to give an idea of what you're in for, both good and bad.

Soul of the mind, key to life's ether...
Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel...
Let strength be granted so the world might be mended...
So the world might be mended...

AGREED! I haven't been able to successfully pick a favorite song because they all rock so much, but that's at the top of the list, along with this and this(another great battle theme!) X3

One of the main gripes reviewers have with Nier are the seemingly infinite fetch quests, which are annoying, but also completely optional XP They also gripe that you have to keep going back to the same places over and over again...which is true, and ya, I wish the world were bigger, but the game is sooo good that I stopped caring after a while ^^ And honestly, I didn't think that the beginning was slow or boring XD I was hooked within the first half hour XD AND GRIMOIRE WEISS IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE GREATEST VIDEO GAME CHARACTERS TO EXIST EVAR. I put it in all caps, so it must be true ^_^
Acen rocks, amirite?
