Got free time during the con and want to help out? Volunteering can use you! We always need people to help out with various things around the convention. Whether you do it for the free crash space, comped badge, or just to give back to the con that you love so much, we'll always appreciate you.

Benefits to volunteering include but are not limited to:

Free crash space- if you're 18 or older, work 6 hours per day, get a free place to sleep that night. This only applies to each specific person who works these hours, as we have limited space. You need to work the 6 hours each day that you'll want to use the room.
Rollover badge- work 16 hours total, get a free badge next year!!
LOVE AND ADORATION from DESPERATE STAFFERS who need YOUR HEROICALLY PROVIDED AID- <3 <3 <3


Also, a lot of staff starts out through volunteering- that's what I did! Get to know us and let us get to know you this way!

(sign-up sheet link removed as we'll be using a new sheet this next year) This form will let you let us know if you have any particular things you can do in particular- heavy lifting, working with tech stuff, etc.


Here are the official rules! READ THESE!

Age Limit: Must be at least 18 to volunteer.
A photo ID with your birthdate will be required for Sign Up.
Wear your Volunteers Badge ONLY when doing Volunteer Work
Crash Space Rules:
Must be 18 to stay in Crash Space Room.
An ID will be left with Volunteers Staff if you take a Room Key.
Must be 18 to help IRT Department. An ID is required as proof of age.

Hours of Operation:
To be announced


We'll also be having a prize for the volunteer who's worked the most hours as of Saturday night! This prize is a tantalizing mystery. Work hard to find out what it could be!

Apparently in recent years the term has acquired some unwelcome slang connotations, so we're just volunteers for now. We're trying to think of something else fun to call them, though!

Do we have to have our badge to volunteer?

I ask because my group of friends and I always do will call pick up, so I am waiting in the line Thursday afternoon/evening instead of volunteering.

Screw it. Zeth, I'm perfectly willing to make a commitment to the pre/post-con volunteer work right now. Message or skype me and we can talk about what you need. Then when the schedule comes up we can discuss what hours you need me to work, I should be pretty open.

How do you get people to help out during the pre-con set up, though?

Plenty of people show up fairly early on Thursday- people who have had their badges mailed, or got through the lines earlier, etc etc. Thursday is when we use volunteer setup help.

Is there a limit to how many can volunteer? Like you guys get full or anything like that? And does the 4+ hours (I heard it was 5 hours) and free room apply to everyone?

There isn't a max number of volunteers, and as far as I know there's mo real restriction on who can use the crash space if youve put in the hours to earn it- though the amount of space we have is limited, sadly. We only get a few rooms to use.

Sounds like a good deal! So, I show up Thursday afternoon/evening, find the volunteer location, work 2+ hours (or is it four even on Thursday?), and I get to crash that night?

So if you sign up for volunteering you must order your badge early and come the thursday for set up? and when you buy your badge early how long does it take to recieve it? sorry one more question>_< how do you know what volunteer location you go to? do you pick it?

No, you don't have to pre-register for it, it's quite possible to get it at-con and still be able to. There should be information on when a pre-reg badge you get mailed to you should reach you in the registration part of the website. You also don't have to work on Thursday, we just like it when people do

What department you work for isn't a set thing- we send people where they're needed when they're needed. You won't be working for the same place the entire con.

I'm definitely considering lending my spare time. Especially because my friends and I are just going to end up sitting around the hotel Thursday. xD

Around what time does set up normally start? Out of curiosity.

We'll most likely be open to sign in volunteers at 4 PM or so. Though this may change- it'll be posted in the original post if it does!

Main Programming usually will start setting up around 2pmish or so. Depending on when the truck gets in that has all the equipment on it, as a lot of equipment for other departments come in on the same truck.

Excellent. I believe check-in for the DoubleTree is around 3 pm if I remember correctly, so once we get in and settled, we'd be able to head over and help. I'm definitely counting myself in for this one. I've always wanted to help out.

There's a link on the main site under "Get Involved > Volunteering" about "New ACen Runner Sign-up." Should I fill that out now, or is it better to just wander over on Thursday until I find a staff member and offer our help?
