I have never seen a henna tattoo applied nor the tools used during the application process but I just learned that squeeze bottles are the norm. I plan on having some slightly detailed henna tattoo work done for my cosplay by my own hand on the front of my body. The thing is that the details cannot be achieved from a squeeze bottle or anything with that big of a nozzle. Sooo...

I was wondering if anyone has tried or think it's a good idea to use something small like a toothpick or similar item to apply henna (black ink by the way). Any suggestions will be appreciated!

What about getting a very small eyeliner brush from a makeup store (or just the makeup section of Target/WalMart/etc) and doing it that way? You might also look into a craft store (maybe by the squeeze paints/the cake decorating area) to see if they have bottle caps you can use which you could cut the tip of to the minute size you need? I've had henna done once that had rather small dots on it and it came from a squeeze bottle, so perhaps there's something you can find?

I don't know if this matters to you, also, but from what I've heard most black "henna" isn't all natural henna, instead some of it can have chemicals or what have you in it. This is what I heard a few years back, I don't know about nowadays, but just something to keep in mind.

Just looked up black henna and its chemical properties...Bad, News. Thank you very much!!!

As a substitute I found some tattoo gel pens that are non-toxic and have thin enough ink to be able to write on the skin. Thanks a million for the heads up!

Why don't you use body paint? It may be a little more expensive, and you may need a lot of it, but it works. And, at least you know it's made to go on your body. I need to use body paint for one of my cosplays this year and this thread really helped a lot. ^_^

I might hold off planning to use body paint actually. I know that there was a lot of problems with distruction of hotel property due to it, and we havent heard if theres going to be a policy change that I know of.

I was thinking about using body paint as well but I plan on wearing a shirt for some of the time so it's kinda out.

I'm likin' Kitsu's idea of using airbrushing, though I'm not using it full body so that means I have to make stencils...unless they have a fine nozzle...

So far airbrushing and tat gel pens are at the top of my list...for now

I found a website for henna supplies, apparently they have a "black henna" without nasty chemicals in it, specifically for temporary tattoos for movies: http://www.mehandi.com/shop/harquus/ Hope this can be of help!

You might check out the whole shop, just in case they have something else I may have overlooked!

I used Black Henna for My Kuukaku Arm Tatto (see image) and I was fine. It worked just like the brown Henna and I showed no ill side effects.
Also - I went somewhere and had it done the night before acen so I would suggest doing that if you are still into getting Henna done.
Because they make all size tattoos they'd have the tools to do whatever you'd want as long as you can bring a picture. Most any Indian Salon seems to do Henna for pretty Cheap. (mine was i think...12-25...dont recall now since that was 2 years ago)

And since Henna can last up to a week if taken care of properly(and can also be gently scrubbed off earlier) I think it's a good thing to use
I won't be attending Acen 2012 due to school. Acen 2013 Cosplays remain a secret.

Harquus. Win. You, are full of win!!! I owe you big time.

Crimson, I plan on making my tattoo look a little old by doing it a couple days before hand. Thanks for the advice though!

My culture uses this all the time. I've seen it applied but it takes a lot of time for the design. It's done with a toothpick or something similar to one. I think it lasts about a week or so too, it done correctly.
Mighta been a time when I loved her too but you take that away, you always been the one.

Actually, regular Henna should be just fine for your arm. You can go over the original henna design with bodypaint, but the henna may not be as accurate as using black henna. Black henna, however, is farking NASTY. I've seen the results of black henna in person and that stuff is nothing to joke with.

The Henna procedure is often moderately priced (sometimes free if a friend is really good at doing it), though you will HAVE To find someone to do it for you. It depends on how good they are with the design.

Some people use toothpicks with their henna, but henna often comes with a pointed-ish tip which will allow for many to be more precise when applying it.

These four pictures are henna on my hands. The first one was while the procedure was being done, the second and third was it on my hands, and the fourth was after it started to peel.
