So if our ability to draw is REALLY crappy but you can see a clear concept...will the art be redone? And will skill play a part in the final judging? (I ask cuz I can't draw hands...at all....and everyone has rally stubby hands....)

The background might be redone in this years design theme but the characters and main aspects of the art will not. Judging is partially based on skill with drawing.

I can give a few suggestions though. There are many drawing tutorials online, at a local library or school library. They could also be holding something.

Take a page from the book of Rob Leifeld and include some rocks or crates on there where you can hide the hands. Or just have them off page.

So we aren't supposed to include a background? (I was going to add a silhouette of Chicago behind the mascots)

Please include a background. It's only a possibility that we may replace or alter to fit our design theme. If you are using a program that does layers please include all layers of the design.

Two questions:

1. Is it better/required for the mascots to remain in their original outfits? Or can there be liberties taken with the outfits as long as they are still the characters?

2. Does it matter if the design is made vertically or horizontally as long as it is kept within the 8.25 x 6.25 measurements?

Our badges are about 3x4 horizontal length being the longer one (stick to the size in the rules this is just to give you an idea of how they look). And You can change outfits if you like, it just has to be those characters.

I only have two more questions.

1.) Is it absolutely necessary for the canvas to be sized at 8.25 x 6.25? Or is that just the maximum size?

2.) I'm using a program that involves layers, and you also mentioned to include the layers with the design. However I merged the layers leaving only the background layer and layer with the mascots, did you mean for every single layer to be visible or just those two? (Ex: Layers involving hair color, then skin, then clothes, etc.)

1) yes it should be this size, this is to preserve quality when we resize it for the badges

We will not be posting the image of the winner due to badge security. Like last year posting an image of your badge is against our forum rules and we strongly suggest you don't do it anywhere. We've had fake badges made from folks pictures and the original owner wound up in a meeting with IRT and board members. You may get blamed for something someone else does because they are wearing what looks like your badge. If you do post it somewhere (other than our forum)blur/block out your label.

As for the rest of the entries, I will discuss doing that with the other judges.

I know this is a really late response but...does that mean that we won't even get to see all the entry pics? Before they're turned into badges? If someone is trying to make a fake badge they won't know who won or how the final product is supposed to look. I know I'd also like to see what everyone else came up with.

Just a suggestion...maybe once you guys decide the winner, you can post up all the raw entries on the home page? We still won't know who won til we get our badges but at least we can look at others peoples work.

I wasn't able to compete either this year because of school and stuff, but (sorry if this is a dumb question, kinda still an ACEN n00000b) do they do this contest every year? Because I'd like to enter one day and I'm wondering if I can do it next year or in the future.

This was our first year doing it. We may consider doing it again but it would most likely not be for the 15th anniversary (next year), our on staff artists have been excited and already working on that art. We do hold other art contests throughout the year though I think the other one DC closed recently. I would love to try to bring this contest back for our 16th ACen if there is interest shown though. We had 33 entries this year that were awesome and I would REALLY love to see more if we do this again.

For ACEN next year, since it will be the 15th anniversary and all-- you should have two badge options! =] You should hold an original character contest (new characters to promote ACEN) and the badge art designed by the staff. Or even combine the two? I think that would be really cool. I really wanted to participate this year but my hands being as damaged as they were it was hard to draw something nice and draw for a long period of time. But now they are all better ^__^ Or instead of something like that, what about an ACEN comic contest? Drawing a comic with original characters for ACEN, (not the characters that already promote ACEN but brand new ones) I bet my ideas sound a little stupid, sorry.
