Hey folks,
We here at Anime Central have decided to kick off our registration season with a brand new contest. This year we've decided to let you, the fans, take a crack at our most displayed piece of art work, the convention badge! How will this work you ask? Well, follow the simple rules provided below for entries, grab your media of choice and head to the drawing boards. We wish you good luck and lots of inspiration!


14th Anniversary Badge Art Contest Rules

1. By submitting your original badge concept art you give Anime Central, and Midwest Animation Promotion Society, the explicit permission to use and reproduce said artwork for convention purposes. If your work is chosen, you are prohibited from posting and/or distributing raw or manipulated art files in any fashion until after the 2011 convention ends. After the 2011 convention, you will be allowed to put your badge concept art into a professional portfolio.

2. Any badge concept art submitted must be original artwork. Anything that is submitted cannot contain any copyrighted or trademarked material (characters, logos, intellectual property, etc.) with the exception of Anime Central's mascots (Jaye, Elle, and Kit).

3. Any badge concept art submitted must be by the artist who created it. Submitting work that is just an editing or blatant copying of another artist's work will not be accepted.

4. Limit one entry per paid attendee. Full legal name must be submitted with any badge concept artwork.

5. Artist's are not allowed to use the Anime Central logo for their badge concept art. Should your work be chosen our designers will add the logo to the piece.

6. Use of the ACen mascots Kit, Jaye, and Elle Aoi is allowed and encouraged for the purposes of this contest. Jaye and Elle Aoi and Kit Akai are all trademarked characters of the Midwest Animation Promotion Society and must be referenced as so, and not claimed as original character designs. Art without at least one of the ACen mascots will not be considered. Creative Color Palletes are also encouraged.

7. All submissions must be G-rated. Remember we are a family friendly convention (no nudity, suggestive posing, etc).

8. No lettering, words, signatures, self-promotion or advertising on your badge concept art design will be allowed.

9. The contest winner will be announced when mailed badges are sent out. The winner will receive a refund for their badge purchase price and writen recognition in the program book for their work.

10. All work must be created in an anime style.

11. Art must be sized on a 8.25" by 6.25" canvas and be submitted to BadgeArtContest@ACen.org in .pdf, .ils, .psd, .jpg, or .png non compressed versions formated with at least 300 dpi.

12. We will not accept mailed in entries or any work submitted in any format other than email in a formatted file as stated in rule 11. If your file is too large to send via email you may compress artwork in a zip. or rar. file and send that in.

13. The Judging team will consist of the Registration Department Head, Artist Alley Department Head, Production Department Head, and a selected MAPS Board member. Voting will commence after entries are received on November 30th. Majority wins 3/4 minimum vote. Depending on the caliber of work submitted a runner up may be chosen for the at con badge art.

14. (Just to end it on the perfect number) Deadline is November 30th by 11:59 PM Central time.

Just to calrify: are staff, family members of staff or ex-staff allowed to participate? Or are we leaving this open to attendees only for the prize of having their badge refunded?

Also, can there be different entries for the separate FRI, SAT, SUN, FULL, FULL special badges?
Or will the 5 best entries be chosen and corresponded to each type of badge?

Staff are not eligible for this contest. Family of staff are eligible. We will not see the names attached to entries while judging to ensure fairness.

Currently there is only 1 winner. If we see runner up art we would like to use we will add a 2nd and 3rd place.

Though we ask that only paying attendees enter due the the prize being a refund of purchase price.

Thanks for the info about this contest- time to get working on it.
One question.
Is there a reference file of the Acen mascots; Jaye, Elle Aoi and Kit, available for us to look at?
For those of us who do not have/can not find our old badges, program guides that may have the mascots, a reference file would be helpful.

Atm I would say check out deviant art, it has a fair number of drawing but I will work on getting an official one linked asap. Kit is the fox man with either a Y tail or two tails I've seen it drawn both ways, Jaye is the short purple hair, Elle has long blue hair.

People can also use the Doujinshi Central Reference Pictures of our Mascots as well.

Ok, I am sad to hear that about the theme, but excited about the contest. This will put a damper on my early start of art projects for x-mas presents. Still I have no idea what to do. The only other question I have right now is, if we can only send them by e-mail, what do you guys mean by Art must be sized on a 8.25” by 6.25” canvas? Is this some tek term I am not familiar with? I thought canvas was, well, material?

@Neko_master_Luna: Canvas is also used for digital work. It pretty much means the area the artwork is worked on.

Anyway, this sounds pretty fun, and it got me excited as well. I'm guessing the characters have to be on a plain/transparent background?

It would be best if artwork is on a transparent background, but not a requirement.

A canvas is whatever you chose to build your artwork upon whether is be physical or digital. *the art teacher in me*

If you look at previous years badges there are slight backgrounds but they are not heavily detailed since text covers most of the badge anyway.

Awwww. Me so sad! D: Could we use one of the themes mentioned in the other forum as our inspiration? Like the Golden Japan or yakuza/Mafia theme?

You can use whatever theme you want for the badge art as long as the art is anime style

I would say this means one person one entry. The prize is also one complimentary badge so it would not be split between two winners. There is potential for a 2nd and 3rd place if we get enough awesome entries.

submitted by the artist who created it. So two people should not be working on the same piece.

I have a question about this one. On the Design I made I added the spaces for the Sticker that has the Badge Name, I added (In my handwriting, not the actual logo) Anime Central 2011, and I added tha Badge Type (full as made example on my design). I did this because the placement of the words is actually a part of my design and if chosen, I'd like the words to be put where they are in the design not just anywhere. And I'm not sure if what I have on mine is okay. From what I think I understand on the rule quoted above, I can have lettering as long as it's not promoting myself. Is that right?

The letting you have placed is for placements sake only and would be replaced with our version of those same words. You did not break this rule. This rule is more to remove graffiti art, signatures, other company logos, promotion etc.
