I'm trying to change my avatar. Using the browse button, I've selected the photo I want to use (2.40 kb, 100x92 pixels, jpg) and when I click to save the page says that my setting have been updated but the old avatar remains.

When I tried again, I received a message stating that there was an error with the database.

Try hitting refresh on the page when you upload the avatar, it seems to be a common problem for me as well.
Once more returned to the forums. 2012 ideas:

The avatar finally updated after 15 tries. Not sure what was going on, but there appears to be a glitch somewhere.

Sometimes it takes a while to refresh. I usually log out and log back in and the photo changes. -shrugs- It should be instant though.

Browsers cache information like avatars for quick loading. What's happening is your computer has the old image cached, so it fetches the one locally on your PC instead of what's on the server. If the new avatar is a different size from the old one, you may sometimes notice the old image being displayed but it's stretched or distorted. That's because you're computer has fetched the new image size, but is still using the same old image. Like Haru said, refreshing the page and forcing it to grab the newest information is normally the answer. At least that's my understanding of it.

Not the case for me. I do tech support for a living, so I know to clear the cache and try refreshing. I posted when none of that worked. It literally took 15 tries to get it to upload the avatar, and that was WITH trying to refresh, etc.

^The other issue is that the forums have been having random database errors. I have no clue what is causing those, but the IT team is aware of them.

Have you tried Right-Clicking and then clicking reload? That worked for me.

I looked through the system logs, but didn't see anything related to your issue. It sounds like a cache issue to me, but it seems like that's not the case from the previous posts.

What browser are you using? I've noticed that some newer browsers (like Chrome and IE9) cache things strangely and it's hard to clear them out at times.

As far as the database error message, we're looking into it. I know that I've even seen it pop up a few times. It's aggravating

Is anyone else having this problem?

Using Firefox 3.6.10 - Just updated today, so maybe it's a little glitchy. That's a possibility... new releases of any browser tend to be buggy, though normally the maintenance releases aren't. *shrug*

Could be. Well, I'll keep an eye on the issue.

Thanks! :)

Not a problem.... hate posting things in here because I can normally figure them out on my own and don't wanna bother you & JJ & Rabbi, but this one annoyed me because it didn't seem to happen for any reason that I could figure out!

I've had just one "database error" message and it was yesterday. Back button and retry and all was fine. Firefox on ATT DSL.

I have another Avatar problem. I display one, and it works for a few pages, then the entire avatar dissapreas and leaves it looking like I don't have one. Anyone have an idea what this could be?

Your avatar is a linked animated gif that's bigger than 100x100px. The forums are trying to resize it using html. In this process, the gif is becoming broken giving use the missing picture image. I would safely say that it's an issue with that specific gif. If you can resize it to 100x70px, it should display just fine.
