This came out of nowhere. I am really shocked to hear that he's gone this early. I loved his work on Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress.

My first exposer to his work was the Magnetic Rose segment of Memories back in 96. I found it after hearing that the original story was written by Katsuhiro Otomo whose work I loved. After watching it I wanted to any and all works by the director Kōji Morimoto and the writer Satoshi Kon. I was disappointed to find out that the only work was Roujin Z another Katsuhiro Otomo work was the only thing available. During my search for more works I found Ghost in the Shell and started following the works of Mamoru Oshii, thankfully he had back collection of work. I was losing interest in anime around this time and if I hadn't found Memories I wouldn't be interested in anime now. Katsuhiro Otomo, Kōji Morimoto, Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon were anime to me I waited and still do for their next works to come out.

If not for there stylistic choices influencing me I wouldn't have found Masaaki Yuasa, Makoto Shinkai, Yasuhiro Yoshiura and Mamoru Hosoda. This newest generation of creators (granted some are slightly younger then Satoshi Kon) has once again brought me into the anime fold again. My desire to try and expose more people to these mens work has brought me back to convention organization and planning.

It is amazing what one 40min script can do.

Man, that's a shame. He was still relatively young, too. One of the most brilliant anime directors I've seen--Millennium Actress is still one of my favorite movies, as is Perfect Blue.

He will be missed.

I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing earlier today. He was amongst the best modern anime directors and his beautiful surreal films will never be forgotten.

Anyone who's seen Millennium Actress should appreciate this.

It was a sad day in the anime industry, especially since he was so young and the fact he was so brilliant. *sigh* I remember reading it on LJ yesterday and literally going 'whaaaat' out loud.

Then texting my sister who is a big Satoshi Kon fan. ;-;

He will surely be missed.

I learned about his passing today and it came as a shock to me. I really loved Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, and Perfect Blue. He was taken away from the Anime industry too soon. RIP Satoshi.

It's sad to lose such a great director at his age, far too soon.

He will be missed.

Real shame, he was also one of my favorite director/writers, unique style and talented storytelling that very few have, not to mention he passed at an early age.

His farewell message on his website's pretty sad too, he knew about his terminal cancer since a week after ACen...

I was reading more about his passing today on Anime News Network. He learned about his cancer and did a heartwarming final message on his site. What was touching was this at the end.

I just found out about this on the Asahi Shimbun's English-language website, and my first thought was "What the hell?". I'm shocked, and disappointed that he will not be able to share any new films with the world. I've enjoyed many of his films, especially Millenium Actress, and was fortunate to see Paprika at a movie theater in Chicago. But he made a huge impact on the global animation industry in such a short time, and not too many people can say that. I hope he is at peace, and extend my condolences to his friends and family.
