Depends on whether or not I enjoy the completely legitimate and authorized software demos first. But Rising especially looks like something up my alley, and I'll always buy/support the things I enjoy.

Why are some of you guys acting like the sword controls don't work in the new Zelda? Did you just watch the conference and ignore the fact that the game is playable at the show and there are tons of impressions out there and they all confirm that the sword stuff is smooth and it was indeed interference messing up the conference?

1-Up

That being said, the current version of the game plays remarkably well. While most viewers of Nintendo's press conference this morning were probably put off by Miyamoto's fumbling attempts to play the game, his issues apparently resulted from wi-fi interference rather than any sort of technical failings on the game. Played in a more intimate setting than a massive press conference, Skyward Sword's new control scheme works quite well. The player swings the Wii remote to simulate the motion of Link's sword, as in Twilight Princess. The difference here is that the player's motions translate precisely into the angle and velocity of the on-screen sword attacks. The game feels precise, accurate, and surprisingly untiring.

IGN

Keep in mind that Nintendo had a pretty dreadful live demo at its press conference, so anyone watching might be concerned that the game might not work as advertised. Watching that demo first hand I can tell you exactly why Miyamoto was having a problem: Wii Motion Plus can use the infrared sensor bar to recalibrate itself, and with the audience filled with devices emitting infrared, it was throwing off the device something fierce. I had the same problem when trying to play Wii Sports Resort last year in our video studio: infrared pollution.

Luckily, the game works. The Wii MotionPlus definitely helps with Link's ability to slice and stab with 1:1 precision.

Gamespot

Forget the not-so-elegant swordplay show put on by Shigeru Miyamoto at Nintendo's E3 press conference. We just got back from playing the new Legend of Zelda adventure, Skyward Sword, and found the new control system to be quite responsive. The one-to-one sword motion works well, and though it does require a more methodical approach than Hyrulian adventurers might be used to, it is easy to trigger sideways slashes and overhand chops once you get the hang of it.

Etc.

Of course, anyone who has played Wii Sports Resort sword-fighting could have told you that Nintendo has a working sword control base to move from.

Now, I'll admit, the graphics didn't impress quite as much as they could have. Actually, Link and the enemies looked awesome, but the environments looked very, very empty. I like the style they are going for, but it still needs works. Could just be that it is still early on though, since it is a 2011 game. A lot of the items looked like a lot of fun, but other than that, the trailer was just kind of there for me. Like hey, cool, a new Zelda. I know it will be awesome, but I think it will have a much better showing in the future when it is a bit more polished (graphically) and they can show off puzzles and such.

I think I was more impressed with Donkey Kong and Kirby. Not that I think they will be better games, just kind of shocked to see both of them at the show looking sweet. Especially Kirby, that style is a bit difficult to wrap your head around, but it leads to a lot of interesting gameplay moments...

No need to get pissy, xvs.

I'll believe it when I play it personally and am pleasantly surprised.

I'm not getting pissy, I'm just wondering if you guys just watched the conference and nothing else or actually read impressions. All of the impressions have been pretty glowing, but that is neither here nor there. The fact is, it has been confirmed multiple times that the on-stage demo glitching was due to the interference, and that it plays fine.

And now we all know this.

Well people glowed about the Wii's performance when it first came out, too, broham.
I see no harm in letting me judge for myself.
For now I can only go by what I know which is laggy experiences with TP and SMG.

Maybe I have a faulty Wii? Maybe my motion sensor bar is in a crap place.
LET'S FIND OUT.

@xvszero
I've been making that argument since the conference aired, but it's a hard battle. IR and Bluetooth are both very susceptible to interference, especially in a conference room. *pat pat* Fighto~

I'm referring to the comments made about Miyamoto's actual demo. Whatever else was going on, the fact is the demo didn't work from interference.

As for your own experience, I can't say much about that. Have you played Wii Sports Resort? The mini-games are fairly basic but they work, as a starting point. And a lot of Zelda is clearly borrowing from it. (Actually, Aonuma even says in an interview on IGN that they weren't getting the controls quite right and then Wii Sports Resort came around and they started working with the team behind that...)

It's actually very possible that you are having interference at home. I bring my Wii to other people's houses and usually it works perfectly, sometimes... not so much. It always works at my house though and we don't have many wireless devices here.

Why the hell would I play that?
(No. ;])

I understand what you're getting at. I'm just whining, let me have my moment.
I'm still going to buy the game, and if it's a typical Zelda game with some new stuff and a decent story and game difficulty then I'll be perfectly happy...most of the time.

Well it is a showcase of Wii MotionPlus. Which really does work. It's definitely a step above the regular Wii controller.

And it's a pretty solid game as well, albeit, it's more fun at parties and such than sitting around playing alone.

(Except the frisbee golf, which I sit around playing alone.)

Indeed, which is what I was saying right after his demo (before everyone got the hands-on and was able to definitely pin it on interference). (See the 360 thread that evolved into the E3 in general thread.) I'm just saying I agree. ^^

Whew. Thanks for the citation there, xvs. Definitely helps one feel at ease about the control issues Miyamoto was having. Poor guy, though. I can imagine the stress he was under. Granted, it's a Zelda game, and people will buy it, but there's always those really hard-to-please jaded individuals (such as myself) who will look upon a product with utmost skepticism after a display like the one at Nintendo's E3 conference.

In all honesty, I will probably still play the game even if Navi does use her infamous rage-inducing catch phrase which made even the most hardcore of Zelda fans cringe in 2008. I'll just be very annoyed, and likely have to play the game under the influence of alcohol if Navi overstays her welcome.

...or just mute the TV. If the soundtrack is anything like Twilight Princess, I won't be missing much to be honest.

It's strange, the art style doesn't bother me at all. They aren't going out of their way to make it cartoony (like Wind Waker) or grimdarkan bloom lighting overdose (like Twilight Princess). It seems like a happy medium of polished cel-shading and semi-realistic proportions. It may not look as nice as Eternal Sonata, but hey, it's Wii graphics we're talking about here.

Am I the only one that never hated Navi? lol Can't say I ever liked her, and I found Midna to be a vast improvement, but it was very rare that I actually got fed up with her.

As for Skyward Sword, I'm personally really looking forward to it. The Wii MotionPlus looks like it really adds to the experience, and while I'm perfectly content with my N64/Gamecube controls, the addition of being able to swing the sword around like that and actually control the shield with the 'chuk sounds like fun to me. And was that a whip I saw in the trailer? The graphics don't impress me too much, but as long as I don't hate them, I don't much care about graphics (Link's Awakening is still one of my favorite Zelda games). Besides, there's still time to polish it up a bit before it's released.

Of course it means I'll actually have to shell out the money for my own Wii this time (brother moved across the country and took his with him, dang it...), but I've always wanted one anyway - I'm just a tightwad.

I don't like Navi (or Issun) not from an annoyance factor, but from a "stop telling me stuff I can figure out on my own" factor. I'd like to solve whatever I can on my own.

Nintendo seems to be moving more towards letting you try stuff out solo before it offers you the OPTION to get help though with Super Guide/etc. (NSMBW, SMG2) so hopefully they will bring that into Zelda as well.

Same here, and I can kinda relate as Issun did sort of play a backseat driver, so to speak. Still, I'll take an amusing, charming, perverted little insect over an annoying fairy any day. Issun at least had a personality.

Nobody in Zelda had "personality" until Twilight Princess. And then that was just Midna.
Mostly because Zelda games are more about adventure than character development.

I'm so behind with playing the Zelda games. I have yet to finish Twilight Princess. I don't have a DS to play the others, let alone a Wii to play this one. This blows.

All I know is that sooner or later Nintendo is, once again, going to receive my money for this game. My girlfriend is really stoked for the new yarn Kirby game.

Oh and by the way, Navi did not bug me in Ocarina of Time. My powers of selective deafness are second to none.

You can still have entertaining characters without the game being about character development. See also: Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, No More Heroes, Okami, and God Hand. Great games, and they're all about the action/adventure, but the protagonists' (and some antagonists') personalities added to the enjoyment factor the games, noticeably.

Epic Mickey, DKC Returns, and Skyward Sword - Rentals, may purchase if I find myself entrapped by them. (DKC Returns will likely be a must-buy for me, if it lives up to the premise)
