Hoom... What a difficult question! Hm...
Well you could pick one which appeals to you. Or you could listen to our experiences and choose from that.

I'd like to recommend Red/Blue - it's honest-to-goodness fun! - But compared to the recent games, the menu system is outdated. Gold/Silver improved on every aspect of Red/Blue/Yellow, while leaving RBY still fun as ever.

With Ruby/Sapphire and on, you start getting into what I'd call "New Pokémon", where the games focus on Legendaries and big dramatic stories (more like other RPGs), whereas previously the games were more relaxed and you could explore without NPCs popping out and bugging you all the time. (Crystal has these types of NPCs, though... it was really the beginning of "New Pokémon" - even Kris's outfit is reminiscient of Hoenn).

I'd recommend not starting with Ruby/Sapphire. It's fun for fans, but I think for a beginner, the route to the end is a bit chaotic and winding, and the waterways can be frustrating. I'd also recommend against starting with Black/White, because instead of too chaotic, it's a bit too (unenjoyably?) simple.

With Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, Platinum is wonderful. Personally I think Platinum is on par with Gold/Silver.

As far as the remakes? I don't think it would be good to start with them. The remakes being FireRed/LeafGreen and HeartGold/SoulSilver. They are fun, but in trying to release Nostalgia with New, I think the end result ends up feeling really strange. Like adding rockets to a chariot.

If you are more open minded, and think outdated menus will be no problem, I'd say start with the beginning! If you go into it pretending it's 1998 and you're 10 years old and you've never played an RPG, you'll be even more prepared!
If you think outdated menus are a problem, and you cannot live without colour in your games, start closer-to-the-beginning with the fan-favourite games: Gold or Silver!

It's a role-playing-game, so in any case, pretend like you're the player character and it's your first journey into the world of Pokémon. Do as you would do if you were in that world. If you want to read it, here's the optional intro help text from Platinum. I never hear anyone talk about it, but I think it's really inspiring:

Did you chase Suicine in Crystal? (Owned crystal but got super bored with it since I had silver and it was essentially the same. Don't remember if you did in silver...) In Soul Silver/Heart Gold you chase Suicine all over the map before you can finally catch it

The plot basically revolved around Suicune. So, I'm sure you know how you release the legendaries from the tower and they start running around from then. Well, in Crystal, Suicune doesn't just run around randomly. It shows up at certain parts in the storyline until you finally fight it in the Bell Tower. Had no idea the same thing happened in HG/SS.

lol wow. I failed in Crystal. xD I think I MIGHT have gotten far enough to get the Togepi egg...but that was it xD And the same concept applies in HG/SS. Suicine appears with the other two who run randomly, then Suicine reappears at key spots in the game. In the end it ends up by Bill's house/above cerulean city and you find this guy who's been chasing suicine the whole game and keep saying he's going to catch it blah blah blah, and there he's like "You know what? I think Suicine wants you. you should catch/befriend it." xD

I'm almost 100% done with both my Pokemon cosplays as of yesterday night <3 I want a put a few more red/blue triangles on Togetic, and Vespiquen just needs the wings and skirt to be attached to the main bodice. So excited!

For our stuff, we're making little rounded purses with wrist loops and zip closures, from this pattern (without the tassel), and adding the + and - signs to make them look more like the cheek buttons

What day are you wearing your cosplays? We'll be wearing ours on Saturday, and we'd love to see yours!

It's really up to you. I personally think that it would be adorable (as another Flareon cosplayer). A picture with 3 Flareons in it would be super cute (I can't remember if it's just you and me doing Flareon or if there was another person as well...)

At the risk of presenting a shameless plug , here are a Mudkip and Plusle that came by our table at Sakura-Con and bought "mini-me" versions of their cosplays. I didn't get a picture, but at Genericon in upstate NY, I sold an Orochimaru plushie to a Kabuto cosplayer who immediately pinned the plushie to her lapel, as if Orochimaru were a corsage

For our Plusle and Minun outfits, since they're gijinka, we're planning to carry "mini-me" plushies of the OTHER half (I'll be Minun, and carrying a Plusle) in order to help sell the connection.

And I'm providing all this evidence so you can decide for yourself: Do the mini-me dolls help, or are they a distraction from the rest of the cosplay? I don't have the answer on whether it's a nice touch, all I can do is show you some other people who think it is, and leave it to you.

(full disclosure: I make and sell plushies, and I regularly carry Eevee and all her Eeveelutions, including Flareon. I'm not trying to sell my plushie to you, just offering some observations from the field, or something ^^; )

You know what, I'll just tell you, sense I'm tired of keeping it a secret. I'm going as a Zoroark. :3 I'm hoping there will be other 5th gen pokemon at the shoot that don't go on the forums, if not then we will be surrounded by trainers.

Like InuMiko said, it's really up to you. I personally think plushies are a nice touch, especially if you're going as something someone wouldn't recognize right away without the plush. Or you could make a food plush, I saw a Gijinka Luxray last year who had a Cheri berry plushie that she'd put in her mouth for photos. XD It was cute.

Instead of carrying around a mini Flareon, how bout a mini Eevee? Or, you could hold a fire stone or one of Eevee's hold items (bitter berry, haban berry, focus sash). :3

It would be so cool to see a fire stone or a berry. Too few Pokémon cosplayers carry items from the games. As for myself, I've got the GS Pokédex, PokéGear, Kanto Town Map, Vs Seeker, and DP Pokétch. But all those were bought. I did make a double-sided game version of GS's Town Map from screenshots. I've been on the lookout for a good shaped bottle to act as the base for a Potion for a long time, I think it would be so cool. There are lots of cool items to make!

i made a plushie for my cosplay xD i'm going as scrafty, so i made a scraggy plushie i'm going to carry around with me. they're always a cute touch :3
