I heard a new one this year. My wife and I ran to Dominic's on Saturday afternoon to pick up some foodstuffs for our hotel room, as well as some safety pins to fix some wardrobe malfunctions. We were in full cosplay and were getting the usual staresz questions about why we were dressed like that, and so forth. After checking out we were taking turns pinning eachother's costumes when a woman came up to us and asked, "what are you promoting?" After a confused pause my wife replied, "we aren't really promoting anything, there's an anime convention in Rosemont." The woman just said, "oh, okay," and went about her business. Who else has had an interesting encounter with the normies while cosplaying in public, explaining your anime hobbies, etc.?

This one time, I went to an amish homestead dressed as Tobi from naruto. I dodged a pitch fork.

My first year cosplaying, in my hotel I stared down some business guy ignoring his buddies at his work conference.He was staring first with a look of awe, disgust & like some thing smelled He couldn't look away I gave him my grumpy look witch matched my character's usual mood.Plus I scared him.

This year my friend and I were in the lobby of the convention center and these two older ladies from the gem show came up to use with scared looks and asked us what was going on. We tried to explain as best as we could but they still weren't understanding it. One of the couple said she hopes her grandson never gets into it... but then said that she's going to have to go on the web and research this thing called "anime". I think she's going to become a closet otaku. XD

It wasn't at ACen but Youmacon a couple years ago. An elderly couple walked up to my friends and I and asked "What in the world is going on? There's so many people dressed up!" So we explained what was going on and they went "That sounds very interesting. Well, have fun, dears." and walk off. It was kinda cute, actually.

This year my friend's mom came along. She had made her daughter's cosplay (female sephiroth) and we had her walk around with us so that we could explain things to her. We would be walking and all of a sudden notice that she wasn't with us. She was somewhere behind poking and just in general examining someone's cosplay. She loved it, though.

Yes, it was similar a few years back. Though it was the optometrist show. We met this guy named Earl, who just burst out & asked what's with all the freaky costumes. My best friend & I plus a nice girl with a I love yaoi shirt. ( I think named Sara) explained. I think he only under stood half of what we said & we learned he was part of security for his con. He sounded drunk, so I kind of wonder how well he did & think he was mostly out to smoke & stare at the scantily clad women, but it was still fun talking to him. Sara confused him by explaining her shirt.

Well.. during Acen this year, 2 of my friends were cosplaying as FFXIII characters, Snow and Sazh.. We went into a gamestop with them in full costume.. and the Gamestop guys had no idea who they were lol, I found that hilarious.

i find that funny as well but this year all i got was an old lady that was actually pretty awesome she was just hanging out with me by the escalators for a good hour and we just stood there and chatted like we knew eachother she told me her life storie and i told her mine and i got complimented on it and also she id ask what was going on so i explained and she thought it was pretty neat altho i was hoping she wasnt a religious freak since i was wearing Suigintou while talking to her and i didnt want her to notice the crosses and crud. but she wasnt too bad i gave her my email hoping she knows how to use the internet..........

during yumacon 2008 there wa a wedding and i happened to be in the elevator as the bride and entourage was coming down. As she was clearly uneasy i made a bit of small talk. The hotel told her that the gathering would be small and this wasnt what she thought her wedding would be like. When the lobby doors opened we were rushed with people trying to get on and her entourage had to push them back so she could get off. Meanwhile the blue guy from tron and i held her train. Then the doors closed and everyone collectively sighed. Not wanting this to happen again tron and i kept people off the elevator. After a short time the bide appeared from the elevator with knives and tron escorting her. She was glad to have our help if not a bit embarrassed.

Told some coworkers that I was going to a "Japanese animation" convention. I knew that the word "anime" would be lost on them. So they all thought that I can draw. Some people looked it up and saw all the cosplay. So for some time I was lumped in with the furry crowd. **sigh**
One fellow finally understood what an anime convention was all about when his granddaughter went to ACEN as well. Go figure!

Anyone else notice what looked like a prom going on around 4-5pm on Saturday? A friend and I were hanging out while dressed as Russia and Norway from Hetalia. Needless to say we stared at them and they stared back xD I even asked (pretty loud) "What are they all dressed up for?" we got a good laugh (me and my friend) and some weird stares (from the promish looking people)

I encountered a lovely lady at Panda Express with my boyfriend and a couple of friends. We were in cosplay and she asked why we were dressed up and we told her that there was an animation and gaming convention going on. She was very nice and she even let us go ahead of her to order food. :3

Then there were these ladies who were wondering where the jewel show was and I told them to continue to go down the habit trail and it will be to the left of the escalators. They were really nice and even said thank you! :3

There is no such thing as "normies". Everyone is a "freak". ;D

I was in an Organization XIII cloak, and my friends were cosplaying as Namine (she also had on a bunny hat) and Lunch/Launch. We had just left ACen and were going to Wal-Mart to buy Final Fantasy XIII. Some guy looked at us and went, "Freaks." My friend who went as Namine was like, "Thanks~!"

My former boss said that she was at the Gem show with her mother and she told me she saw dozens of us around the convention center.

At Youmacon last year, me and my sis were at the mall on Halloween and we had people look at us, some with curiosity and some with complete puzzlement. I even had a little kid come up and say hi to me, while in Suigintou cosplay. I thought that was cute.

I don't know if I told this story yet. If so then cunno. At ACen 09 a group of norms gave me flack about my Star Trek TOS Ensign cosplay not being Japanese. The thing was they were all wearing Team Fortress cosplays. The best part was when real con-goers came to my back-up. Right as the elevator doors were closing on the TF people a con-goer yelled at them, "The G***!"

I was at NatsuCon last Saturday. The fire alarm goes off (lolol when does the fire alarm not go off at a convention, amirite?) and my friend and I get locked out of our room... OTL

ANYWAYS! We are standing in line at the front desk to see if we could get back into the room when these ladies are complaining about the con goers. One of them is like 'There are kids everywhere, my kids are scared! They have learned more inappropriate things in these two days than they should ever learn!'

I was trying not to laugh and I felt so bad for the receptionist... but yeah, sometimes normies should check out what is going on in a hotel before choosing to stay there.

everyone deals with it differently, and I love the different reactions. There are some who are accepting of the craziness, and then there are those who are totaly against it. Like the religious protesters that show up every year at Fanime (i still get a kick out of it either way lol)

and now for my story. Not exactly weird nor was I cosplaying but it was awesome! My boyfriend and I went to a movie in our school's town of middle of nowhere Kentucky Very christian, very southern. So I'm wearing my Acen 2008 shirt and the lady serving us popcorn just randomly yells "Acen?! Awesome!" and I'm like O.O and she goes on to say that she loves anime and cosplaying and when she saw my shirt she was like O.O because she didn't think she would find anyone else in the town that liked what she liked. Needless to say...best time getting popcorn EVER!
