2010 Irt Complaints

But this year, my group and i stepped off of our shuttle from the Aloft on saturday only to get screamed at about being in the street. We literally were walking right to the sidewalk, yet an IRT was yelling about us. (Sorry, we weren't close enough to look at the badge). I understand that's for safety, so while i was irked about it, it was ok. Except for the fact that right behind this guy was a group of 10- 15 people standing in the street smoking.
Also, random complaint, i really don't know if it's for IRT or what, but what is up with the hooka people? It was disgusting and waiting for the hardcore and the soap bubble i had to stand in that smoke. Just saying.

Depending on the time, I may have been the one to holler at you. Honestly, the way that at least my partner and I had it worked out, was that between him and myself, he was helping with, and from me on, I was keeping an eye on since we couldn't look both ways at once. I had also gotten into the habit of just calling out to everyone I saw to get up on the sidewalk, half the time not even realizing that they were headed there in the first place. I apologize if it seemed like I was just being inconsiderate, I just didn't notice the others since it was to be my partner's watch area. (If it wasn't me, then I'm not sure how it was being handled, but if it was me, once again, I'm sorry.

and as far as the hooka thing goes, i don't think it is awesome or smells much better than anything else. on top of that they were making a crowd, forcing people to walk off the side walk and on to the street.

As for the IRT members in question about drinking, I can say I had to walk past that location many times and I know that they made lots of jokes about drinking throughout the day and were jolly but did not strike me as drinking. For example, *whenever we saw a Naruto cosplayer walk by, they made the joke "that's another shot" but I did not see any alcohol and when I asked them "I thought you guys weren't allowed to drink?" they said they did not. I don't know if these were the same guys but I believe this was Friday morning/afternoon. I can assure on my part that any of the times I had to go there and back on Friday and Saturday, I never saw any alcohol.
I wish I could remember call names and not faces, but oh well, I hope the shift times help and feel free to PM me and I can describe them.
Otherwise, I am sorry to hear so much about a lack of professionalism but we are volunteers and doing the best we can too. I agree that we should try and I do try in my job as staff. But as a non-IRT, maybe relating my story will give a different light. This is my first year working with panel programming, so I certainly was figuring things out such as how stern to be with certain guests who refuse to clear the room so we can set up for other guests. Cutting them off I am sure never comes off as nice and I hope I came off as professional to the majority of people, but you cannot please everyone. I also am guilty of not keeping a set of rules. The policy of PP is to kick EVERYONE out of the room (save disabled people), but whether I did or did not depending more on if they was a line of 20 or so people or not waiting for the next panel. Whatever I think of the policy of PP (to avoid argument on the policy itself), I try to be fair and stick to rules but like I said, my judgment will not please everyone. In all this mess, I am sorry if I seemed like I wasn't trying to be fair or if I was unprofessional or did not explain things and I am sure a lot of IRT feels the same way.
Not to be defensive, let's face it, in any given population, there are bound to be jerks.
*Edit: just being extra-careful to generalize this location. the actual thing was different

1. While running to try to get to the end of the line (my friend had heels on) and giving high fives along the way (thanks to peer-pressure) I fail to notice a wooden board or plywood that was placed in the ground in front of me and fell.... KEEP IN MIND...that I was watching where I was running and the wood was placed in a poorly lighted area. The crowed made a "oh!" that sounded realy bad and a IRT said "No running!!!" Oh ya way to tell me that right after I fall and not asking if I was at least o.k, another girl who was running with me actually bothered to ask if I was fine and helped me up to my feet. For anyone who was there, I was the girl with glasses in the green sweater that took the fall and ended up with the heels of my hands scraped and cut and 2 bruised knees. My right knee took the most damage out of the fall, I landed on a brick that was placed in that area. I now walk with a limp and I must take precaution when going any where and while working, so far I hit my knee once and I hurt like hell. Plus sleeping is a challenge I must wrap my knee with my blanket so it is cushion from any harmful objects.
2. Blocking doors, there were a few IRTs who reminded us about blocking the fire exits and the people near us took over the role of reminding people pf blocking the doors. The IRT stopped coming around after 10pm.
3. The line suddenly got wider for no reason, while it started of as 2 person wide line, the line expanded to about 5 or more people wide. 2 People that where 5 people behind us came near out group since they were below height average, along with a few others, within the help surrounding people we had to keep them safe with the help of these 2 tall golfers. Thanks guys!!!

1.) ouch, I recomend you get your leg checked out, it can be a problem for you later, better to find out you're ok then overlook something. : /
2.)IRT had priority on the lines and whenever I'd walk pass the smokers I'd try to ask them to please keep the doors clear. There was one group on the right side that weren't very cooperative, a couple of their people kept sitting directly against the doors : (
3.)Yeah, I remember asking alot friday evening for people to move as close as they can to the side/ grass to let people pass. some people didn't want to cooperate or ignored me. People who tried to move couldn't because the line wouldn't back up. Thank you to all the people who did try their best to make room on the sidewalk, you made it easier for people to get by : D

But in the end, I decided that I would put this up as a constructive criticism rather than a 100% complaint.
Anywho, like I said I have never had an issue with IRT before but during the concert/masquerade mash up...they were frazzled, confused and deaf.
Why do I say this? (aka what happened)
It was about 4:15 and I was heading toward the door to go outside for the masquerade line that was FAR too long when I spotted the five tokyo mew mew cosplayers heading (as I thought) into the concert line. So I run up to chase after them and get stopped by an IRT female saying I can't go any farther. I try explaining to her that I want the five girls for a picture but as I'm trying to talk to her, her male coworker is literally yelling at me "you can't be here, you can't be here, move, move you can't be here." So of course the female IRT worker that I'm talking with can't hear me and the girls vanished into the crowd. (turns out they were in the masquerade so I got a pic after all but that was pure luck)
I back up out of the doorway and watch as he keeps yelling at people who are trying to cross his invisible wall to head outside for the line and I decide to ask him a question. So I walk right up to him and he's just yelling "you cannot come past this line" despite the fact that I walked DIRECTLY to him and stood in his line of sight he seemed to have no desire to help me so I just yelled OVER him "Where is the masquerade line. Inside or Outside." He just said outside and then started yelling AGAIN " but you can't stand here." Without even listening to me trying to say I'm waiting on someone AS I'm backing up.
Now, I understand that they were trying to keep the doorway clear since there was so much going on in that one spot but the fact that he never bothered to listen to me or help me was plain frustrating. I mean, I was TALKING to another IRT member when he was yelling at me. I wasn't trying to start anything, just wanted to get a picture. Anyway that this can be addressed? I don't know what his name was and I only barely recall his appearance (i think tall, caucasion, light brown hair in a ponytail and glasses) and I don't want him to get into trouble because I know that they were stressed and busy..I just want them to take the time to listen/be aware of what's going on when they are so stressed and busy

Most hotel places don't care that much if you aren't wearing shoes at night and you're out of your hotel room....is there a rule at conventions that you must wear shoes?

Hello!
Actually, most hotels that I've stayed at require shoes for health & safety reasons. If you're just going down the hall to get ice or something on your own floor, they don't mind and generally won't say anything, but in public areas at the very least (which in the Hyatt means the first two floors and the basement level) you're required to wear shoes. And honestly, the hotel would prefer you to wear shoes everywhere, they just won't usually cause a fuss if you're not in public. The reason that the IRT Op asked if you were part of the convention is because we can't interfere with non-attendees... we have to contact the hotel and let the hotel handle it.
Basically, it's liability. If someone dropped a glass and it broke, and you stepped on it, you could injure yourself. And other things could happen in a busy convention if you're bare foot or just wearing socks... you really don't want to know what it feels like to have someone wearing a spike heel accidentally step on your foot when you're not wearing any shoes. And on a general "ick" moment, you really don't want to know how not-clean those hotel floor are by the time thousands of attendees have walked around them.

It's possible that he wasn't yelling at you but at the people that were trying to cross while you were talking to him. Regardless, there are more tactful ways to do that kind of thing. We will keep in mind this scenario for next year's training; thank you for your feedback, and I apologize for the experience. If something like this happens next year, though, try to remember the callsign so we can take more specific action to correct it.
On a side note, though I'm barely ever out holding lines or clearing halls, I'm tall, caucasian, wear glasses, and have dark brown/black hair in a ponytail. So if by the light you saw my hair color as different and it was I who did this to you, I apologize again. Though I sometimes alternate between talking to people and projecting to the crowd, I try to keep them fairly distinct and not aim the latter at the former.

Issue # 1: Friday evening, just past 6 o'clock, my friend and I got in line for the Aural Vampire concert. We knew about the rule for cameras so we had already made a stop by the hotel room and dropped them off. We were not completely aware of the bag rule though. My friend had her small black draw string bag with her, and when i say small put an emphasis on small. It barely held her wallet, my wallet, and my glasses case (i was wearing contacts). We were just quietly standing in line waiting and an IRT walked up to my friend and started yelling at her, saying no bags were allowed in the concert and we would have to get rid of it. Well after some creative folding and such, we were able to stash the bag away. But as we continued to wait in line, we noticed this said IRT member was only picking and choosing certain people to yell at about bags and when it came time to go into the concert, no one was stopped from entering if they had a bag. We were quite upset that we were singled out like that.
Issue # 2: The Hellsing photo shoot was on Saturday night at 9:30 in the dome at the Hyatt. Our group made sure we were out of the way, still a nice path for people to get thru, as well as not being overly loud and such. Around 10:30 towards the end of our shoot, several IRT members came up to our group, yelling at us and promptly saying we needed to 'get the f**k out'. Our group tried to calmly explain we were doing a photo shoot and the schedule said that was were we were supposed to be, but none of them were really listening to us, just telling us where ever we had seen this schedule or whoever had told us we could be there, that they were 'f**king wrong.' Not wanting to really sit there and fight over something so stupid my friends and I left.
Issue # 3: Around 11 pm saturday night my friends and I decided we were attending the Oregon Trail panel. We quickly discovered the long line and walked down to the end of it, which happened to stop near the entrance for soap bubble. As my friends and I moved into the end of the line, several IRT members began to scream at us, specifically my one friend who was still in her yuffie costume and was carrying her prop on her. It took several mins for us to calmly explain to them that we were NOT trying to sneak into soap bubble, that we were in line for a panel. We also continued to get various IRT members come up to us and start yelling, none of them in the loop of what exactly was going on so they decided to scream at us cause they believed we were in the wrong.
I understand IRT members are there to keep people in line and such but i have never felt so insulted and belittled in my life. This was the first ACen for my two friends and they actually were debating on leaving early they were so appalled by the IRT staff. They continually asked me if things were this bad the previous year and i must say i had never had any issues until this year. I have plans to attend ACen next year though im not too excited to go if the staff is going to be this rude to my friends and I. Seriously, im an adult, i would like to be treated as such.

I'm very very very very VERY sorry this happened to you. It makes me really sad. IRT should NEVER treat attendees like that. IRT should NEVER swear at attendees.
I know that at one point, people were blocking exits and being really loud during a photo shoot on Saturday, which was causing some problems in the rooms in the area up there because we need it quiet, but I'm pretty sure it was earlier than what you're talking about... in that case, we went out and asked them to keep it quiet. I believe Knight yelled to get everyone's attention, but I KNOW he didn't swear, because I was there... so I'm pretty sure we're talking about different things.
I know that sometimes I have to yell to get someone's attention, especially if it's noisy... but you never continue yelling at people if you can avoid it. And you never swear. And the fact that someone did REALLY upsets me.
Thank you for letting us know about this. Even though you don't have callsigns, we can definitely keep this in mind for next year for training. I really hope you come back and I hope things are better next year... I'll try my best to make sure they are, even if I have to remind people to smile when I'm talking to them on the radio. *hugs*

One question on this... was it in the Upper Dome or Lower Dome where this happened? Because the Upper Dome was off limits to Photo Shoots... per the Cosplay gathering subform at http://www.acen.org/...showtopic=34794 it says:
I) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/aqu...en/103_0152.jpg
The upper dome. It is now completely off limits to all gatherings. Offices are up here, the EMT/medical room is here..and so is IRT. They will eat you. Don't go up there for gatherings.
Not to say that it was ok for anyone to swear at you... because it's NOT. But if you were in the Upper Dome then they were accurate by telling you that you were in the wrong place.... all photoshoots scheduled in the Dome were supposed to be in the Lower Dome, not the Upper Dome. Once again, I want to emphasize that they should not have been swearing, regardless of what location you were in.

On Friday, I was up on the 10th floor, waiting for an elevator down. I'm waiting for about 10 minutes and an Elevator FINALLY comes up, but the problem is... the passengers were IRT going up to the VIP Floor. I asked if I could ride up the floor in order to get down to the lobby, where I was immediately told No. I insisted that I've been waiting here for the last 10 minutes and I won't be getting off up there, so there should be no problem! But again, they told me that I have to wait for another elevator. So they left with no new passengers and the elevator went up. I clicked the Down button again and waited yet another 10 minutes for a completely different elevator to come.
There was no reason that I couldn't have taken that elevator. If I even attempted to get off on that floor, then they'd be right there to tell me to get out. Not like I need to be up there anyways. There's nothing important for a Non-Security member to see in there! So it's a nice room, but I'd like to get back down to the Convention so I can be with my friends, take more pictures, and buy a few things like a Con-Goer does.
But no. I had to wait almost a HALF HOUR on the TENTH FLOOR because IRT wouldn't let me jump into an elevator that was going ONE FLOOR UP!

Hello! I'm sorry that you were inconvenienced, but the floor above 10 is off limits to non-hotel personnel except in special cases. I'm not even allowed up there! If IRT was on that elevator then they were requested up there to help with a situation or were previously granted permission to be there, and they were correct in not allowing you on that elevator. I'm sorry because I know it was a hassle, but I've had the same thing happen to me before as well.
One other thing that I thought of, since I don't know the exact reason that IRT was heading up on that elevator. It's a possibility that they needed to keep the elevator clear for a medical or other emergency situation. If they were just heading up there, the elevator should have come right back down. Since it didn't, it was obviously being held and kept clear for some reason.

I'm sorry if this was a hassle. Were you incapable of taking the stairs? I know they're a little hard to find if you are not aware of them. It took me a while to find, too. The hyatts maps are not too clear and I can imagine it being difficult : /

I'd be capable of it, but I didn't know where the stairs were. But it really shouldn't've been a problem to go up for the 5 seconds it would take them to get off the elevator and get back to the Lobby. Otherwise, perhaps they need to set some sort of Upper Level Priority clause into the Elevator programming, so that people on the higher floors CAN get back down to the lobby without being forced to take the stairs.
Imagine if I DID have luggage with me. Hiking down 10 flights of stairs would've been horrible!

Here's the thing - if it wouldn't have been a problem for you to go up for the 5 seconds it took them to get off the elevator, the elevator would have immediately come back to your floor because you'd called it. The fact that it didn't immediately come back suggests to me that it needed to be held for some reason and it would have been a problem for you to accompany them.

Fray... as I explained above, they might have needed that elevator for an emergency and been holding it empty for that purpose. The elevator was obviously held in the private meeting room up top for some reason, since it didn't immediately come back down for you. If they had just gone up there and gotten off, the elevator would have come back to 10 if you had the down button pushed. Sometimes we need to hold elevators for Rosemont PD or EMS, or for another important reason.
I'm really sorry that this was a hassle for you, but if IRT tells someone that they can't get on an elevator, there's always a very good reason for it.
EDIT: Hobbes said the same thing I was saying. Sorry for double posting unintentionally.
