Surprisingly in the past I've had little to no issues with the IRT staff... but I think that's because this is the first year I decided to stay the night at the con both nights. Mostly they were good or neutral drones from the people that would keep people in line, or organize the splits in the lines...that sort of organization seemed to go really well. However, there were a few instances that really upset me, and others in my group that I think definitely need to be resolved.

Edit: Personally removed accusation in the hopes that it will be sorted out internally.

Anyway, I had nothing but pleasant experiences from the rest of the ACen staff, especially the folks at Registration and in the Dealers', but I had to vent from this very unpleasant experience.

i had a problem with intoxicated IRT members as well. My friends and I got on the elevator at like...the 5th floor or something, and it goes down and a couple IRT members get on. A couple IRT members get on and said "partying on the elevator huh?" to which i thought he was just joking and i kinda chuckled about it. THen when we got off on the first floor, he pulls all of us aside, and starts yelling at us about how we shouldn't party on the elevator and that we can't ride it anymore. So we tell him that we weren't partying at all, and that we had just gotten on, to which the IRT member replies "then how did i catch you then?" I mean WTF? It was quite obvious that we weren't partying AT ALL, and we had just gotten on the elevator a floor above him, that's how he found us on there >>;; plus the fact that he didn't even believe that we weren't partying when we were dead serious, there were other people TELLING him that we weren't, and the fact that we really weren't partying! We then got bitched at even more and then our elevator privileges were taken away for the night, so we just left. It was ridiculous because the guy was obviously intoxicated.

Before that my friend dropped a leaf off of the balcony. I know that's not a good thing to do, and so he should rightfully of gotten talked to by the IRT members. My gripe with that is there were 7 or MORE IRT members that all came in a giant group just to tell him not to do that, and then warn him. Plus a head IRT member had to be there. Does it really take that many IRT members just to warn someone on their badge and tell him not to do that? Even if it was a LEAF that was dropped off? Because from what i hear there were way worse things being throw off the balcony which i think deserves a lot more IRT members talking to them. Not saying he shouldn't of gotten warned, because if it wasn't a leaf, or it hit someone, then someone could have gotten hurt. I'm just saying that i don't think it takes a head IRT member plus 7 others to come talk to him to tell him not to do it.

Not only that, but Saturday night i was walking around in my Leeloo costume, which is a bit...revealing, but every important part of my body was covered, and i made sure i wouldn't be flashing anyone with extra security measures. No IRT member talked to me at all about it, and i was passing them left and right, and i even talked to a couple of them or said hi. None of them told me to put on more clothes or to go get checked. But that night a couple of them came up to me while i was searching for a restroom and told me i had to put on more clothes. I asked them why because i had seen girls with even more revealing clothes on, some which even weren't costumes that had never gotten talked to, plus the fact that i had never been told to all throughout the day. They said i wasn't checked if it was okay and that they were trying to put a stop to cloth covered costumes. I just pulled out my hoodie and put it on, but it irks me because i had NEVER gotten talked to, PLUS when they said "i needed to get checked" i asked them where i could go do that, or how i should go about doing that and they never answered me. THey just said "oh, well we just want to put a stop to these kinds of costumes". After that was the leaf incident, and i was curious because the head IRT member was around i took off my hoodie to be back into my revealing leeloo costume. They walked right by me and said nothing. So now it just seems like those IRT members were just singling me out which frustrates me.

as I said, the IRT members do need to do their job, but things just bug me like that. Like i could understand no parties in the elevator, but when we told him we weren't, and other people were backing us up he did NOTHING but continue to yell at us. The leaf thing is the most understandable, but again does it really take 7 members to tell one guy off when he was being completely civil and wasn't drunk at all or getting out of hand? And then when girls were running around with tape over their boobs and underwear as a costume, I'm the one that gets yelled at finally on the last night that i was going to be running around in it? I wore my costume half of Friday and all of Saturday and that's when they tell me? I dunno, it just feels a bit ridiculous. My group of friends and I were doing NOTHING wrong the entire rest of the convention, and yet we were always getting dirty looks running around.

again i think it was right that the IRT talked to my friend for dropping things off the balcony. If it wasn't a leaf it could have been very bad, and i do not have any gripes against that at all! In fact i'm glad you guys talked to him about it. I guess i just thought it was overkill bringing that many IRT members to talk with him. But knowing other things that go on at the convention i'm guessing overkill is betting than underkill?

Thank you for letting me know my costume was okay. After they talked to me i was kind of wondering if maybe i had just gotten off lucky and that it really was against convention policy, but then looking around at other people in revealing costumes, plus another leeloo walking around, i didn't really know. But i'm glad i wasn't breaking any rules, and that i was fine.

i do not remember seeing his call sign at all, so i can't tell you that. But i hope someone remembers, because i don't think we were the first people that he was being a jerk to.

IRT op. Bunni here to respond. The elevator was spotted with individuals sitting on the floor and all buttons pressed going up from 6-10. Operative Ghost pointed it out to me and we watched it go to 10 then began stopping on every floor again on the way down. By the time they reached our current location on 8 I could see ALL buttons were again pressed. We decided to respond immediately because that kind of behavior is extremely disruptive for people trying to get to their rooms, emergency transport, and basic wear on the elevator that has many times in the past broken elevators during the convention including car 1 this con. We took the stairs and had enough time to catch up to the elevator on floor 4. Ghost Chocolate and I entered the elevator and began talking to everyone in the elevator that it is not a toy and that "elevator partying" is extremely disruptive to other guests. I did not get a chance to finish my explanation before repeated interruption and finally I had everyone exit the elevator on floor LL or main lobby to finish the explanation. The policy for "elevator parties" is to have everyone exit the elevator anyways and issue them a warning. As such I only issued a verbal warning of "If I see any of you doing this again, I will call it in, and you will be issued warning from the pen." Unless you are the rude individuals who repeatedly tried to walk away and actually had to be told get back over here 3 separate times, then there was no yelling. I know everyone is there to have fun. It is our job in IRT to help the 20,000 people have a safe enjoyable con. And by the way slandering is an not appropriate way to try and make a point seem more valid. Everyone who responded was sober and appeared as such at all times in a professional manner. I don't know the exact individual who typed the initial complaint, but half of the individuals that were removed from the elevator were rude and uncooperative. One individual was also trying to find a lost bag and we assisted them by taking the to the pen to make a report so we could help find it.

then i apologize to you Bunni, for i thought that you were intoxicated because you repeated yourself 3 times in the course of one conversation, and it felt as though you were quite rude to all of us, when all we said was that we weren't partying in the elevator.

From what I know that had happened was my friends and i got on the Elevator around the 5th floor, and a person was sitting but i didn't think anything of it. Then the next thing i know IRT members are coming in telling us we were having a party. The only thing i heard when in the elevator was "throwing a party huh?" or something to that effect. I didn't hear anybody saying we shouldn't throw one, until after we were off of the elevator. Perhaps the people in the elevator were having a party, but by the time my friends and I had walked in we had no intention of throwing one, we just wanted to get down to the LL and go back to our hotel room. That is why i found it rude when we told the IRT member we were not throwing one, and maybe we were just caught in the cross fire, but it felt as if the IRT were not even listening to what we had to say. I did hear that we were not supposed to come back onto the elevators after that, which further made it feel like we were blamed for throwing a party that we did not even have. I must have remembered yelling, but again i was just standing there. There honestly was no party, and i do apologize for slandering you or anybody else. My group of friends were talking about how they all thought the IRT member was intoxicated as well, so i just went with it. But perhaps the IRT member was just mad. I hope that there was no party in the elevator, and i assure you that me nor my group of friends had no intention of throwing one. I'm not upset at the IRT for telling us off, i'm just upset that it all felt rude, they wouldn't listen to us or say something like "hey, if you were or weren't throwing one, just don't do it or we'll warn you", but i didn't hear anything to that effect. All i heard was "don't throw a party in the elevator" to which we replied that we weren't. If we were rude about it, then i also apologize for that, we just wanted to get our point across when it felt like the IRT weren't listening or believing that we weren't.

IRT at the masquerade seemed to mostly have their heads up their rears. They had no clue what each other were doing, half the IRT said "no you can't leave the line for food or snack, and no to going to the bathroom." You expect people to sit in line for 3 hours and not have to pee? or get hungry considering the line was wrapped around the building. Yet if you manage to flag down a hotel staffer, its a different story then the IRT's get on the "line jumpers" rear when hotel staff already cleared them and asked the surrounding area if they didn't mind said person leaving and coming back and not jumping.

MOST UPSETTING OF THIS WHOLE WEEKEND: My friends and I, like most con goers were PAID GUESTS OF THE HYATT. We had a room for two nights there, and on Saturday night after the game room had closed, we wanted to go part of the hotel we hadn't been in before. The moment we got there, this rude IRT woman told us to "turn around and get out". When I had asked why we weren't allowed in a part of the hotel that's completely open to guests, all age 21 and over, she refused to answer my question, told me to "shut up", and told her partner to push the elevator button for us to leave. I pressed the issue, because a mature, professional response and explanation would have sufficed to have us leave, and she proceeded to call us "stupid, incompetent" (likely better attributes suited to her unprofessionalism), and when one of my group members suggested we return "downstairs", she rudely insisted "NO, you are NOT taking the stairs, you are waiting here for the next elevator and going back to your room" (despite the fact that, legally, we are all WELL over the curfew age and she has no right to impose that sort of restriction on us). Oh and that's not all... HER AND HER IRT PARTNER WERE HEAVILY INTOXICATED. How ACEN staff could allow this is beyond my recognition. I wish I had taken her name, but for a general description:

Sad thing is, this is far from the worst I heard and I can easily imagine it happening. Why was she so dead set against you taking the stairs? Maybe it just made her feel more authoritarian. Thing is, IRT people go on shift while drunk all the time. But situation like this are just depressing to hear about.

IRT operative Boomer. Although i was not doing lines (except 1) i do apologize that some IRT said you can't leave to pee. I know the feeling being in line then having to go, it's natural and because of that i do apologize. Please keep in mind though that if many of you need to go to the bathroom it can get confusing who goes where. We need to keep you in mind as well as the position you are in. When 20 of you need to go we need to remember percisely 20 of you and possible another 20 more people, 1 either ahead or behind of for 1 person. On that note, if you tell hotel staff, it is not IRT. If no operative is told and they didn't see it, to us then it will look like a line jumper so please keep that in mind. BTW, hotel staff will move on so they might not be there when you return. If the staff is still there you can refer the operative to the staff so they can verify it.

If you are still having trouble remember, get the call sign of the operative. Getting the call sign can really help us out so don't be afraid to ask for the call sign.

As for food or a snack, that is a bit different. My advice to avoid this kinda problem is keep some snacks on you to atleast subdue your appetite and keep water to keep yourself hydrated and to not be thirsty while snacking or waiting. Also plan ahead so before you head out, eat a meal that way you won't be hungry for a while.

It's not slandering. All Friskies was trying to do is say what happened and that you appeared to be under the influence. You aren't in the freakin black ops or alpha team. You're a volunteer at an anime convention that happens once a year. Some IRT seem to forget that somewhere along the line.

I know this has been asked before, but can you give a the callsign, or discription of IRT member(s), and time you saw them? I do not know of anyone who went on shift intoxicated. The people who work in the pen, by checking out radios and vest are active, hardworking people and I know would not let this slide. If you could please report anyone you see intoxicated while on shift, I'm sure Viper and the other supervisors would appreciate it. I don't think IRT wants irresponsible people to work for them.

"WHY DOESN'T IRT KNOW WHERE MY PANEL IS?"

Are there any legitimate complaints?

This is a city where the police put typewriter bags on your head, beat you with phone books, sometimes beat you half to death at a bar where you work and still keep their job. To be fair that is CPD, Rosemont can be much worse.

As far as IRT goes they protect you from what could be a very, very bad convention if the police were to get involved.

Get over yourselves. Would you rather be arrested for trespassing? Obstruction of emergency vehicles? Attempted murder?

But if you think about it, everybody from the con wants to go there to have fun. Heck, i go there to have an escape because i get a lot of that kind of crap at home. I think telling the IRT that they were kinda rude, is a good thing. Now if i was like "now you can't tell me not to do something when it's illegal" is bad, but i do think people could be a little less rude about enforcing things at a con when other people are trying to be civil and just want an escape from their day jobs and crap.

Ask the police next time to be less rude to you when you're arrested for endangering people due to ignorance or entitlement.

IRT isn't there to be kind to you, they're there to deal with illegal activities and danger that would get the convention shut down. It would be like asking con operations or registration to do line duty at the soap bubble.

You are not a police force. Many of you have not had police training. Many police are used to stress, and would not scream at us right off the bat. We are just asking you to be nice to us. That is not hard. I know I haven't been under the stress you've been under, but I've taught a children's class 30 minutes after having a gun pointed to my head. I think of that when I try to imagine the stress you're under. I handled it.

I've had awesome times with a LOT of the IRT staff, some of whom I've randomly met with and then some who I've spoken to while stuck in line for one thing or another. And I love nearly all the IRT at Acen, but it's those few and far between ones that really just let out all their frustrations on the con attendees that get my goat.

While I do agree with you I have to ask, did you seriously have to teach kids by fun point? It's not that I don't believe you, it's just hard me to wrap my exhausted brain on this one or how it came about. I do understand if you don't want to talk about it though.

Sadly, I have my complaints too.

Registration :
I had pre-registered, so I was good. But, my friends didn't. So I decided to wait in line with them even though it meant missing a photoshoot. Well, once we got there, and for sure, they were twelve. But I guess the registration staff didn't believe us and asked us for our IDs. They are careless kids and left their IDs at school, obviously. When I got home, I read the site.
For security reasons, we require anyone above the age of 16 to show a valid photo ID when you pick up your badge. If you are under the age of 16, we understand that you may not have an ID and do not require it. I.R.T. may ask to verify your ID and badge at any time during the convention, so it is wise to keep your ID on you.
They then told us to bring our IDs next time. I mean, this isn't something I should complain about because it is understandable, but I thought ACEN would trust us. Plus, if you were going to say it, you could at least say it in a nice way. Not in a stern way that almost made one of my friends cry.
Another thing, on Friday, I went with a different group of friends. They were both 13 and said they were 12, but the staff didn't care, they were laid back and cool about it. So thank you guys.
Another thing, is my brother tried it. Obviously, I didn't work out so well. But it seems like the staff member at his booth tried really hard to kick him out. When the staff member found out he was lying, he called in another staff member. He also told my brother to grow up. I thought that was rude. That staff member thought that it WAS rude of him to say that, and just told my brother to pay full price. He told him he would have done it too, so he doesn't blame him. When he walked away, the booth staff said "You're lucky it was him or else I would have kicked you out."

During Con
On Sunday, my friend had a sign that said "The Game" and the other side said "Free Hugs"
We had it for more than two hours. There was some IRT that we kept seeing and they kept laughing and playing along. So, after a while, some other IRT tells her to throw it away because it is completely irrelevant to anime con and that free hugs is prostitution. It disappoints her so much, that we actually left early.
I know the no running rule, but I was actually skipping.. But that wasn't such a big deal.

I did not get any of their names sadly, but that is all.

That hints that you guys are incapable of being kind, which I KNOW is untrue, because a lot of the IRT I met this weekend were super. I didn't mean for that to soumd sassy or argumentative, but finding out this year how rude IRT can be was like finding out that Santa doesn't exist. XD Acen was like my ultimate escape of ALL troubles, and I had nothing but reapect for anyone, since I never encountered IRT before. I'm really not angry, just really hopeful for a better next year. And I know, it's wrong for me to knock you guys til I try it, so I WILL be IRT one of these years, in return for expecting so much from you.

Yeah. I teach cildren's martial arts, and about half an hour before I left, I got in an argument, and the person I was arguing with had the gun out anyway because they were going to a bad city the next day for work, so pointed it at me so I wouldn't interrupt. I know they would NEVER use it, but I'm terrified of guns, so it was not fun.

Registration :
I had pre-registered, so I was good. But, my friends didn't. So I decided to wait in line with them even though it meant missing a photoshoot. Well, once we got there, and for sure, they were twelve. They then told us to bring our IDs next time. I mean, this isn't something I should complain about because it is understandable, but I thought ACEN would trust us. Plus, if you were going to say it, you could at least say it in a nice way. Not in a stern way that almost made one of my friends cry.
Another thing, on Friday, I went with a different group of friends. They were both 13 and said they were 12, but the staff didn't care, they were laid back and cool about it. So thank you guys.
Another thing, is my brother tried it. Obviously, I didn't work out so well. But it seems like the staff member at his booth tried really hard to kick him out. When the staff member found out he was lying, he called in another staff member. He also told my brother to grow up. I thought that was rude. That staff member thought that it WAS rude of him to say that, and just told my brother to pay full price. He told him he would have done it too, so he doesn't blame him. When he walked away, the booth staff said "You're lucky it was him or else I would have kicked you out."

During Con
On Sunday, my friend had a sign that said "The Game" and the other side said "Free Hugs"
We had it for more than two hours. There was some IRT that we kept seeing and they kept laughing and playing along. So, after a while, some other IRT tells her to throw it away because it is completely irrelevant to anime con and that free hugs is prostitution. It disappoints her so much, that we actually left early.
I know the no running rule, but I was actually skipping.. But that wasn't such a big deal.

I did not get any of their names sadly, but that is all.

well I really can not comment on your reg complaint other then letting you know that you should post it in the reg section of the forums. while it is perfectly
valid this thread is specifically for complaints about IRT.

as for the signs unfortunately signs that are not specifically related to a costume have been against the rules for several years now the operatives who asked you to discard them were properly doing their job.

Ah, but there were so many people who had the same thing with them. If you went to the masquerade, there was someone with the sign that said "The Game."
Someone also had a shirt that said "Free Hugs." Someone had a shirt that said 'The Game." About ten people had a sign that said "Free Hugs" And that had NOTHING to do with their cosplay. But IRT didn't take it away at all. People had signs about "The Game." Also.

I would just like to point out that alopex is not now nor ever will be IRT. and his opinions are not ours.
