this will be my first ACEN to attend
and I am just curious, and want to hear from local attendies
How safe is the Area or part of town that ACEN is in?

Is Rosemont apart of Chicago?
I think my hotel is like 5 miles away from where ACEN is at

any feed back would be great, thanks

Rosemont is not technically apart of Chicago. It's not IN the downtown area. If that's what you mean.

The part of town the con is in is pretty safe. I wouldn't be worried.

Indeed. Rosemont is still about 2 or so miles west of the city of Chicago (technically, it's REALLY close, as O'hare is a 10 minute walk away and that's Chicago city Limits). You don't even have to worry about the part of Chicago that you would be in if you decided to go to Chicago. In concensus, the worst part of town is the south side, pretty much anything south of McCormick Place, which is still a pretty good distance away from the city.

You'll be safe as long as you don't go LOOKING for trouble. IE: Giving people some sort of threatening gesture, go wandering around dark alleys etc. Just be normal and friendly, folks won't mind.

I'm a 5'2" shortie and I have walked around the surrounding convention area by myself MANY times over the years, imo it is a very safe area and you should not have too much to worry about. But if you are still somewhat concerned always remember the buddy system.

I wouldn't suggest walking around at night alone, but Rosemont is pretty safe. I've lived in this area all my life (I'm in the next town, less than 3 miles away) and I can tell you our police blotter is super boring and I bet Rosemont's the same. :)

Just practice common sense, really.

Don't look like a target either.
Which for those of you who have not heard that before, it means just keeping alert. Walk like you know where you are going, keep your head up, and know whats going on around you.
If you keep that in mind you should do ok.

I've never heard of anyone get shot, stabbed, or otherwise seriously injured by a perpetrator during the con. You're pretty safe.

Rosemont is a suburb with a lot of hotels and businesses. It wouldn't be a destination for conventions if it were dangerous.

That said, if you're around the con hotels after dark, you might want to learn the layout of the above-ground corridors, just to be safe. Those corridors can get uncomfortably crowded during the day, or empty at night... but they'll help you get from the Stevens Con Center or the Hyatt to the hotels across the road without having to go outside.

Rosemont is known for its very strict parking laws. So if you bring a car to the con, always find out whether the place you're going has metered parking!

If you don't have a car and you want to go somewhere a few blocks away, get a cab.

The least safe areas of Chicagoland, IMHO, are nowhere near Rosemont. Even downtown Chicago is not dangerous (but if you're walking through the loop, you really shouldn't carry a map or a tourist guide...) I can say this because I've seen parts of Chicago's west side near the Green Line, and I've been near the old housing projects.

As someone who's lived in Chicago her entire life (actual Chicago, not "the Chicagoland area"), I'd just like to point out that that's a stereotype.

I'd like to agree. I've lived in what is consider not the best of neighborhoods on Chicago's northside for the past 3 years. I have never been mugged, threatened, or seen someone getting shot. Not that it doesn't happen, but the general rule is if you aren't violent, then you're likely not to be part of the violence.
