Female staff members dressed as characters from the series welcomed customers to the cafe in Tokyo's Akihabara district when its doors opened at 8.30 a.m.

The 140-square meter shop, operated by the toy maker Bandai Co., seats 60 people. It is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sundays. Alcoholic drinks are sold from 5 p.m.

The cafe also sells goods related to the "Gundam" series. Souvenirs include baked sweet confectionery shaped like the anime's characters.

I think girls are the more popular choice to appeal to the Japanese geek population and it sells better.

I was actually hoping for a moment that they had people dressed like gundams at the cafe, that would have made me squeal like the gundam fanboy I was when I was a little kid.

Guys think girls are cute + girls think girls are cute = maximum profit. I can certainly see a market for a male cosplay cafe, but I dunno if it'd be as profitable as a female one.

Well anyways, I would SO go to a Gundam cafe.

When I was in Akihabara (alone)... I saw two places that appeared to be maid cafes. I wanted to try a maid cafe out, but they had massive lines... say lines that go up 3 flipping stories up a building. So I didn't bother as I didn't know for certain they were actually maid cafes.

Same reason Hooters only employees well-endowed women. You pick a market that will get you a lot of money, then pick a strategy to reel in that market.

Yeah, that's a valid point.

However I could see something working like the bartenders/table cleaners are male and the greeters and waitresses are female. The group can request photos or games with any of the staff.

Or in classic Japanese style they could just employ women for all of the jobs and just dress some in drag (ala. butler cafes that are staffed by women).
