That's some serious kit for just starting out! I was wondering why your images were so clean looking, having a 12 megapixel full-frame sensor helps I'm sure. Was the 50mm in full frame pretty nice to handle? I have a 50mm, but it's a difficult lens to use in situations like ACEN due to equivalent range of 77mm using a crop sensor camera.

Considering your images, I don't think you needed a flash. I just thought you might have been using fill flash because the images looked so even. I also didn't have an add-on flash for ACEN, but now I do have a Sigma 530DG Super. Just need to motivate myself to go to another event like ACEN to actually use it (I will be using it for stock photos at least). :(

If you don't like the tint of images from the camera (JPG or RAW), you could use pretty much any version of Photoshop to change the color balance, hue, or a lot of other properties.

While I personally didn't, a lot of the photographers set up photoshoots with cosplayers on this forum before the convention. All you need to do is create a thread in the proper section say a month or so before the convention happens in 2011.

How have you learned to soften skin so far?

I actually did not use any flash on any of my pics, I just got my flash last week, still learning how to use it, hehe. The camera I use is a nikon d700 and I have a nikkor 50mm lens. For my photos at acen, i did crop a lot, I mean a "lot" framing was all off... I do most of my post processing with lightroom, mostly to make the colors more vibrant and to fix the white balance, sadly, I used jpeg for acen so the photos seems yellow, couldn't fix the white balance, noob mistake, should have use RAW. now, I'm learning how to soften the skin, makes the subject a lot nicer to look at, hehe.

where do you guys find cosplayers that would actually do a photoshoots? shooting in the hallways kinda limits the creativity, seems like my photos have the same poses over and over again, my photos tends to get boring overtime...

i agree, my equipment is a little too much especially if I'm just starting, but thank you though, My girlfriend bought my equipment, she somehow thinks I have an artistic side and wanted me to explore it, thats how I got into photography, I'm starting to really like it though, its just a very expensive interest... About the 50mm lens, its pretty good, honestly though, I cant give you a proper comparison, its the only lens I have for now...

anyway, thanks for the advice regarding the tint, I'll try to re-touch my photos and experiment... I'll try to download the trial version of photoshop, I only have lightroom for now...

I'm learning how to soften the skin through youtube, hehe, there's a lot of videos regarding how to do it, it amazes me how they make it still look so real, mine looks fake...

I really want to do a real photoshoot with cosplayers or anybody who would model for me...

anybody here going to soycon this weekend? hoping to shoot some cosplayers over there...

More is better than less. I think your GF gave you probably one of the best gifts camera wise. A nice prime lens like a 50mm was also a good idea rather then a cheap zoom lens. I personally prefer prime lenses over zooms.

Yeah, it is an expensive hobby for sure. My last new lens was around $700 and I'd currently like two others ones that are around $1000 and $1200. -_-

I have a family thing on Saturday, and Sunday is a picnic (probably not much cosplay), so I probably won't be going to Soycon. The people who posted in this thread probably don't visit often these days, so I don't know when they would respond.

To add on to this you could also find spots where you could set up a photoshoot and start a thread advertising it. Just make sure it is okay to set up in that spot because Seph was kicked out of the area after doing a few photos for his shoot. >.< If it is a good day there are plenty of great outdoor locations to set up that are away from high traffic areas. Inside is pretty tricky because everywhere is a high traffic area at some time and the lighting isn't that great either.

What did I do? I posted a thread letting cosplayers know who I am, what my business is, what I do, and that I was offering cosplayers free studio photography work as I was working on a new genre of imagery..

um yeeaaaaaaaaaaaa... that didnt go very well.....

after that.. I told myself I would NEVER offer ANY cosplayers free photoshoots again... or ANY of my work on the forums here for that matter...

Interestingly enough.. I am actually trying to phase out of "glamour photography"... and as to interning/assisting.. I sure could have used your help this week... I have a fine art photography exhibit coming this friday at a huge well known art gallery....
I finished the location just today, and now all i have to do is mount, and install the images..

really? this friday... I would be glad to help, but unfortunately I'm in Washington DC right now for some conference, won't be back till Friday evening, maybe next time... but I'm serious, need help, hit me up... just want to work and learn from the pros... Just curious, why do you want to phase out glamour photography? and where is your exhibit by the way?

I'll take a stab at it and guess he wants to get out of glamor because there isn't much money in it? Most models want to be paid for work instead of the opposite. I assume most of the money is made by finding clients that will pay the photographer and model (magazines or the like).

Anyways, tough break with the anime cosplayers Seph.... I'm kind of curious about the not offering any of your services on here part as well (maybe a PM if you have time?).

Fashion pays a lot(per shoot)..
Glamour not AS much(per shoot)..

Last year, my "Fashion" shots equaled my "glamour" work
This year, im not getting as much "fashion" work, but "glamour" has really picked up and more then makes up for the difference...
and trust me... A lot of woman have no problems spending good money on a photographer for a "glamour" shoot.

Im technically not going to STOP shooting fashion and glamour... but my personal interest has actually lead me into an other genre of imagery that is not only more profitable at this time, but has a market less saturated with photographers(trust me.. ive been searching heavily), and the imagery has much a greater impact on the viewer....

This new genre of imagery really allows me to express myself in a way I could never before. And I can not express the gratification I receive from this work. I personally feel that my new direction is taking me into the realm of being an artist.
I also get to work with other artists who has a passion for this form of expressions. And when two entities both share the same vision.. the imagery is explosive...

I hate to label my work, but you can say im shooting a type of "fine art" Ive been searching and searching for other works of my vision and style, and i have not found anyone with my specific vision yet...
That alone will really set me apart from others and to brand my work.....
Im tired of "copying" the works of others.. im stepping up my game and creating original works...

To add on to Sephs post:

As a model and an artist I have seen a lot of works and have seen tons of "fine art" photo's which almost 80% were not fine art. The work that I have seen from Seph's fine art is what I would call fine art. You can tell that there was a lot of planning and technical work put into the photo besides just a naked body which with fine art you see that all of the time. Some can be beautiful, but it really doesn't show any creativity or art.

With glamour and fashion it is a huuuge industry and every photographer that I have worked with has done both so it really isn't specialized. Granted you can still do well in these categories.

With cosplayers a lot of them have never had a shoot before and are used to regular con quick pose, shoot, and leave procedure and don't know how to take their time and take direction. I'm not saying that they all are like this, but a lot of the cosplayers that I take photos of have pretty awkward poses and it is hard to tell them to turn their face slightly to the right or anything like that. Then again I'm not walking around with an expensive camera  (Kodak Easyshare lol). But to sum it up they are used to photo quickies and crave for more photos so if you give them the opportunity to single them out for a photo shoot they are going to take over the shoot and forget that you are giving them your time for their free shoot. There's probably more to it, but this is what I have personally encountered as a novice photographer and cosplayer. But to redeem cosplayers, we really really really appreciate you photographers for doing what you do and making beautiful photos! :glomp:

You know what.... that was very well said, and now I know how to verbally express my choice....

I am extremely passionate about my work. Those who keep in contact with me know this...
I offer free service for my personal projects only.. but I do not just hand out my work freely to just anyone...
For my personal projects.. I look for personalities fit my ideas....

In general.. cosplayers are just on a different mindset than I....
im not saying all... I already HAVE created some really gorgeous images with a few cosplayers I meet here through the forums..
but more so then not... as i had just mentioned... their mindsets are on a different wavelength than mine... :(
which is why I do not advertise myself here on the forums..

And to answer your earlier question.....
My work will be displayed here

And if you watch this news cast

You will learn about the owners of this Art center....

err,
I'm a pretty new photographer and was wondering if any of you could give me any tips. I have a Nikon D3000 and use my kit lens (18mm-55mm), it's a good beginner camera. I fell in love with photography when I got my first camera that was actually mine. (from.. early 2000s/late 1990s) I would just like any pointers..

I guess I should show some photos.. There are a few on my deviantART which is in my signature. I also have a flickr, which doesn't have much since I don't have a pro account. (Only 100MB per month. x-x) My ACen 2010 pictures are on my flickr, they were shot with my Nikon Coolpix S210. My Flickr I don't really think that some of them are that good.. I guess. (I'm sorry if the link doesn't work.. tell me if I doesn't and I'll try to fix it.)

To my knowledge he is just starting out and only has a 50mm lens. I also agree his ACEN images are nice!

I think you have some nice perspective and framing with the recent nature photos.

I only own a 50mm... though I was able to rent out a 70-200mm for a convention in michigan... I'm saving right now to get a new lens, I was thinking of getting a 105mm dc or a 70-200mm, they are just too expensive...

That's for sure. *looks* woah... that 70-200mm F2.8 is expensive. I just got a DA* 300mm F4 SDM and felt like it was a lot (not even close to that 70-200). I'm looking forward to the Rockford Airshow now though. Quality glass does make a difference!

I think you might be better off. Once you start, stopping LBA addiction is near impossible. :pirate2: :0:

But it just looks like it is so much fun! I want to carry around a giant camera around my neck. And name it. Do you guys name your cameras or other expensive equipment? :P

Have not really had the desire to name my equipment like a pet yet.

However I did post a journal entry on a Japanese website about the new 300mm and I gave it the name "serious lens"

Ooo very pretty! If you don't mind me asking, how much did you spend for that camera? I eventually want to get a nice digital.

The camera body goes for around $800 online these days as it has been out for over year (Pentax K-7), the grip is around $230. One plus to Pentax is they tend to be a bit smaller than comparable models from other brands. The K-7 is magnesium alloy cased, steel framed, and weather sealed.

Spoiler

It's not quite a "pet" name, I suppose.

FYI, there is an Airshow in Rockford this weekend. If anyone has a telephoto lens and can handle some sun, it's good photography practice!

I'll probably go (not sure which day yet).

I've been reading through a few of these posts, and I would be honored to have a photographer's meet up at ACen this year. This will be my fourth year coming to ACen, and my second year as an 'official photographer,' if you could call it that. I am a photography major, and I'll be working with both digital and film photography at ACen this coming year. I am also doing a few closet cosplays. So, depending on what panels or gatherings are going on. I am always up for meeting more photographers. XD.

I have a flickr account that i don't really use.

Or there are more recent ones on my deviantart account.
