Its one of the top videos on yahoo.com

Quote

"Rex Roland, a Teacher at Enka Middle School in North Carolina, in Trouble for Calling Student a Loser on her Paper.
Roland, who teaches sixth grade at Enka Middle School in Candler, North Carolina, said he was joking when he called one of his students a 'loser' on her paper, but her mother Patty Clement does not see it that way. She wants Rex Roland to be suspended. This is not the first time Mr. Roland has called that student a loser either. Back in November he also wrote 'loser' in red ink on the girl's paper and this time he wrote 'minus 20% for being a loser' and then underlined 'loser' twice. ABC has a video report of the story.

Patty Clement complained about the conduct in November when it happened the first time, but now it has happened again, she wants Rex Roland to be suspended. The Buncombe County School District released a statement saying the matter was being looked in to and the principal and Mr. Roland have met with Ms. Clement but says that it is not enough. She wants teachers to inspire, not break down children.

Rex Roland has been teaching at the school for 12 years, but Ms. Clement removed her daughter from his class. Some parents said Mr. Roland was just trying to relate to his students but no one would go on record in his defense."

Wow. "Relating to the students"??? What kind of crap is that!? You NEVER put down a child as a teacher. I hope this guy gets canned. That is no joke. Kids are already bullied by other children, they dont need teachers to do it as well. This seriously makes me livid because I can't imagine how upset I would be if one of my 6th grade teachers did that to me.

What do you guys think?

I definitely agree with you. It's extremely unjustified. On top of that, 6th grade is a VERY delicate age. 6th graders are insecure, awkward, and unsure of themselves. The teacher def. went WAY too far.

This is uncalled for. At my high school there were a few teachers who insulted students, but they're almost adults. To do that to a 6th grader, he outta be ashamed of himself.

I watched the video. Seriously, a teacher should never do that, no matter how old the student is. You can never know how a student will react to something like that.

FIRE HIS BUTT.

You never do this with a student, even as a joke. I can get away with calling one or two of my students "smartass," but that's only because I've known them for the past few years and consider them friends.

If this had happened to me when I was in 6th grade, the teacher would be picking his teeth off the floor, courtesy of my dad.

Sounds like a teacher where I work that 99.9% of the students who have her hate her. Now I'm not saying they are complete angels, but she has actually told some of the students they will not amount to much other than being hookers and drug dealers, their families are nothing more than dirt, and yells at them for various minor things like a student wanting a different copy of the work she hand them becuase their copy had either a coffee stain or a lipstick smudge. She was actually pulled teachers who were walking by in the hall into her room to ask if a student is one of thiers and could they take care of them. She is the typical completely burned out teacher who should have been fired but has so much tenure that it's not even funny. She actually told a student "that oh with as much drama you act out you should take a theater class." Well the student complained to thier parents who inturn complained to the principal. Who then confronted her. Her response was no I really ment it.

You have to use a sharp stick to do it with.

The teacher needs to take a step back and look at Psychology 101. Negativity brings about negativity and anger, positive reinforcement builds up confidence. Kids, especially in the ripe transition years of middle school, are bombarded by being broken down daily. Some of those kids don't have parents that are good morality foundations. Hell, I still have memories of teachers who built up confidence..and I've been out of high school for a few years!

I couldn't even get through the whole video. The jerk needs to be fired and blacklisted.

I agree with all of you, that teacher needs to go. I have a sister who is a teacher and she would never ever do anything like that!!!!

I did have a college professor that called me "an ugly white girl" but she was a great teacher, and only called you that if she really liked you. So it was ok cause I knew she was giving a compliment when she said it.

No one liked that teacher because she was the kind of adult that wanted to re-live her youth, and so she treated all the girls like sh*t. I remember when I was 13 she told me I was an embarassment to women everywhere because of my poor memory skills.

Some teachers really need to re-evaluate themselves.

I don't know if this is bad...but this video made me laugh. lol XD

And I agree this was messed up. I dunno, if this happened at my school back then, it wouldn't really be a big issue. Kids were tougher in my neighborhood, and most wouldn't go to their parents if this happened. They'll probably cuss the teacher out and call it a day. I've seen teachers cussed of many times at my school.

Oh my gosh...seriously...I'm showing my friends this video later. The face that guy made when he did that....oh man. lol

LOL! yeah, it's pretty awesome!
i guess, because america has a slightly feminist attitude, many people instantly feel that knee-jerk
reaction of siding with the lady, but she asked for it--hitting a cop and expecting him not to retaliate
in any way because she's a women was totally lame. and, she slapped the shouted at the cop and
slapped him SOOO much harder than he hit her. so, yeah, it was pretty hilarious to see the cop
give her one back!xD

See, I was expecting another case of a parent who over reacts to a Teacher putting pressure on a kid.

No, this guy is just a jackass. There is a difference between a teacher who, very unfortunately, slips and calls a kid stupid. This is repeated jackassery.

My Dad does joke around with his students like this, hence why he is popular. But that's the key. He goofs around. One student wrote, in the comments section of his paper 1800 Get Hair. My Dad responded with 1800 GetABrain. Two months later? Kid had a brain tumor. Classic.

Seconded. At your level, you're talking about college students whom you may see for several semesters and actually build a bit of a bond. In 6th grade, you're really only going to be seeing them for a few months (especially since this started in November), there's no way you can build that kind of relationship with your teacher that quickly, especially at such a young age. As has been said, that point in life is a very critical and sensitive time in a child's development, this kind of stuff can push them into a negative spiral.

In college though, that kind of relationship can be quite fun. My favorite professors were a couple of guys who weren't afraid to tell some stories that may rattle a few cages and call some people names in jest, but they were very sensitive to the feelings of the students at the same time and typically learned pretty quickly who wouldn't take their remarks seriously and who would. It actually kept things interesting and lively compared to most of the other professors I had who were just bland, lifeless, lecture-and-nothing-else profs.

I just bought this week's edition of Newsweek, which features improving schools as its main topic. There's something in there about a teacher saying to a student who tried earlier to commit suicide--and I quote--"carve harder next time."

In that guys defense (and I'm not going to defend him farther that I can throw... Any sort of heavy object would work for the metaphor) he might have been trying to call the person out on their bullshit. When most people do it for attention, and alot of people feed into it, sometimes people do the opposite.... It's not right, but I still say the improper thing to do is to feed into the bs that these people give you. I applaud the teacher for NOT going "There there, it's okay". I do not applaud him for what he said in response, but I somehow believe there was more subtext there than "I want you to die".

I would have to agree to a point. I would tel the kid, "listen. If you're doing this for attention, stop; this is not the way to do it, and too bad, not everyone gets to be on TV. It's the truth. If you're doing this for legit reasons, you shouldn't be here; go to a mental hospital."

But I would only say that if I was really really sure the kid was doing it for attention, because I don't think every person who tries to kill themself belongs in a mental hospital.

Reminds me of when I was going to school in South Carolina and I think it was 4th or 5th grade. I had the worst teacher I've ever had there... She was verbally abusive to alot of the students and she actually did something physically to my best friend (nothing serious, she slammed her hand down on her desk). I was a pretty sensitive kid and she was pretty nasty to me, which was unacceptable to my mom who complained to the school several times before things actually got any better. I'd like to grab teachers like this and shake them. They're supposed to be role models for Christ's sake.

My Sophmore year World history teacher smacked me on the back of the head for not doing my homework, and the entire class was witness to it.

Needless to say, my dad was PISSED. I have never seen my dad so upset. The teacher was only suspended with pay for 2 weeks and I was removed from her class. That started a huuuuge uproar in the parentals of the students in my class. needless to say, she still worked there when I graduated, which was wrong within itself.

My 6th grade homeroom teacher and the assistant principal suspended me out of school for 5 days for "forging" my dad's signature on these envelopes with a progress report inside. We had to bring them home, no matter what the grade, have our parents sign them and turn them back in. My grades were bad, but I would never do a damn thing like that. When I brought the suspension slip to my dad home, he was pissed as well. He quietly got his coat on, picked me up, tossed me in the car and sped down to the school. I sat outside in The studen services office and the assistant principals office was across said office, and I could hear my dad screaming at them like he was talking right next to me.

the amusing part was the fact that said teacher became the dean of the high school my sophomore year. He was the dean of last names beginning A-L, as he couldn't be my dean :)

This teacher in the article should be fired, hands down. there should be no discussions about it or meetings or votes. Teachers are the backbone of our children, and now people are starting to realize why kids these days grow up to become gangbangers and drug addicts, because the teachers don't support them enough. God I gotta get out of this country.

role models of what? they only paid to teach, thats it.

Teach education AND life. Let's face it, ultimately you're paying these people to work with these kids for several hours a day, 5 days a week for a large percentage of the year, and these teachers are going to mold these young minds whether they like it or not. If you don't want to be a role model, don't be in a position where you're around impressionable young minds all day.

Yeah, my father heard you say that he would..... Well, he'd be too damn laid back to say or do anything..... But he'd disagree at least.

And so would I. If you aren't going to even try to be a mentor, or a role model, or at least make an impact, why are you in a job field with so little room for advancement? You know, there are some teachers who turn down higher paying jobs because if they took them, they wouldn't be able to reach the students they feel really need them. You know that Romanticism you get in teaching movies? That exists. Too infrequently, but it does.

In our lives, we spend the most time learning from our parents and from the schools. Some people are lucky enough to get good hearted, idealistic teachers who struggle every day to make a real impact, and help kids along. Because that's what they should aways do. Teachers who just teach? Yeah, they exist. But they shouldn't. The ones who go in, read the book, go on a little shpiel about other random nonsense, are not the ones we remember (unless they were that horrible). The ones that we all remember are the ones that go to work saying "Screw this teaching crap, I'm going to be a real mentor...."

This is why it pisses me off so much when I read about teachers like this...... it also irritates me to no end when people shrug off a Teacher's value. Yeah, some teachers don't deserve credit. I've had boatloads of them.
