Yeah, way to miss the boat on this one PETA. The city took out the trash cans because they couldn't afford to do trash pickups anymore, not because trash cans themselves are too expensive. Dolts. XD If PETA really wanted to be taken seriously, they'd knock this crap off. If you want to donate trash cans, fine. If you want to put your name and maybe your website on them, also fine, but going to extremes will not get people to support you; it'll just make people shake their heads and wonder what your parents did wrong.

If you liked this, you're going to love this: the President's oceans policy group is considering widespread bans on fishing in public streams and rivers. Why? Because the group is dominated by people from the World Wildlife Fund, PETA, and others who believe animals should never, ever be hunted, and that fish have "feelings" and therefore should not be caught.

Never mind that the conservation in this country has been done by hunters and fishermen since Teddy Roosevelt (who was known to gun down animals in his time, and enjoy it thoroughly), and that these greenies like PETA wouldn't know what to do in a real forest with real, humans-are-tasty-too animals. They just know that animals have feelings too, and so we can't hurt them. (Except for euthanizing animals, which is okay with PETA...or must be, because they kill thousands every year.)

They're also considering widespread restrictions on commercial fishing. For the same reasons. Maybe Phil Harris got when the getting was good in Alaska crab fishing.

My question to PETA types is this. If you're not a predator, why aren't your eyes on the side of your head? Deer are herbivores. Their eyes are on the sides of their heads. Wolves are carnivores. Their eyes face directly forward. Guess which group humans are more closely related to.

The joke that is PETA is still funny today. Because of them, I have to explain myself every time I say I'm a vegetarian. If I say it, I get some rant about how screwed up PETA is, and they usually make that retarded joke, too.

The People Eating Tastey Animals Joke annoys me. It's a peeve of mine. Can't do anything about it but complain, but I have no intention of trying to stop it.

I am.Different Vegetarians have different rules. My moral code prevents me from buying meat from the store, and eating it. My Moral code does not prevent me from taking my Recurve and shooting a deer, and enjoying venison. Arlo Guthrie wrote a good little thing about hunting, where he talked about how people find it to be a cruel sport, but what he found crueler was that the same people who found hunting to be immoral would continue to shop at the market.... Animals who do not have a chance, who are force fed, bred for only to be slaughtered. A hunter gains the meat through skill, through practice, and is on a more even ground. For this reason, I have no problem with hunting.

I'm thinking that PETA is mostly made up of the same little devils that spend their days trolling on forums, news comment sections, and kicking kittens and puppies and kindergartners waiting at bus stops when no one else is looking. They thrive on raising other peoples' eyebrows whenever possible, and flourish when they can pick up on some new hot topic and skew it into a promotional campaign for their little cult. How are they still in existence? My guess is that they've infused themselves with the same survival instincts and techniques as cockroaches. It won't matter if a SWAT team goes after them, they prolly have the whole crew from Joe's Apartment on payroll.

To that end, I find it absolutely hilarious that the reason why the cans were removed in the first place went completely over their heads. And I love the mayor's jab. You go, man.

I have no clue why a majority of those in this thread are freaking out about this. I do not support PETA but honestly, if they are offering to do a community service who cares what is on the trash can ? IT IS A TRASH CAN. It's kind of like advertising on benches... It's just a way for a city to provide a service for the public without using tax dollars.

Problem isn't that they can't afford trash cans, it's that they can't afford people coming to pick up the garbage & PETA hasn't said they'll pay that. So basically they aren't doing anything helpful.

@kitsu and trini : Even if they aren't providing the trash service, they are at least offering something (which might just be a way for them to get more of their propaganda out there, but there would be many cheaper ways to do that). There is a good chance they did not even realize that was the reason the city removed the trash service. I'm not saying it is not silly, I just do not think a slogan is very offending and that this is a tiny fail compared to many of PETA's actual problems.

True they're offering to do something, just not anything useful. It's like offering to tie shoes for a guy who has no legs.

It shows that they did no research what so ever. That's really not the type of organization I'd ever support.

We're also talking about the same organization that tends to use celebrities and political figures as faces for their advertisements without their consent, while claiming that said figures would appreciate/enjoy the gesture. And they've continued to do this despite getting a real nasty reaction from the First Lady after they pulled this stunt using her image.

I'd say it may not even be a case of them not knowing, but rather selective reading/hearing. All they see is an opportunity to put in their propoganda, and they completely bypass the actual reason behind the cans' removal.

Heck, they may have put this out there solely to put their name in the papers again, whether they get the can deal or not.
