I like the sound of that book, I would so buy it! I thought since people mentioned it, all the different little times of being accused of working some where or for the wrong company & even during the wrong time to ask for help. My best friends says, the longer you work in retail, the more you show a retail, walk & have a retail stench that draws people.
First retail job right out of high school at Target. Since My Mom worked at Walmart & her shift ended way after mine, I decided to walk to her job. There I am in my red & khaki uniform & my badge with...a target & some old lady ask me where the Isotoner slippers are? After I told her I didn't work there & that she would probably find them where ever the sock were, she gave me a dirty look, so I added," I work at Target, but I shop here." Then I pointed to my badge, she laughed & shook her head. I forgiver her, she was probably going senile.
I worked for American Greetings at my future disappointing & current Walmart job, for the next one. Back then, Walmart people had blue vest & I had a turquoise smock, more like an apron really. Now at this point I had only worked during the week a few days & had only just applied at Walmart. Though because it was a few weeks from Christmas, I had to come in on the weekend to straighten the cards. One of the head CSM's (people in charge of cashiers for those of you who have not worked there) ran up to me & said, "Oh great, I need you up front, we're swamped!" I said, "Excuse me, I don't have any cards up there." She looked at me like I had gills or some thing, then added, "I need you on register." I laughed & said, I only just applied, does this mean I got the job, because that was fast?" She still looked at me like I had tentacles or some thing. Finally she blew up at me, " Don't be funny, I just need you for a bit, to help clear up the lines." I laughed again, "I don't work here yet, I work for AG" She pointed at me & yelled some more, until I made her read my smock. Her face turned red & she stormed of muttering her self.
I only had a half an hour for lunch, being a smoker, that meant a mad dash to get food, buy it in long lines & eat while smoking out side in order to relax. ( I do realize how wrong that sounds, but it's true.) I was cursing the coolers & finally selecting a lunchable to tied me over & I hear the new guy say, "I'm new here why don't you ask her, she works here." I cringe, but hope to sneak off acting like I didn't here, no go. The lady & her Son kept saying Miss, over & over again. So I turn & say, "Excuse me I am in a hurry." She gives me the look of injustice & you shall pay, my your rude & says, but you work here & I need help. "So I say, I am off the clock & on a tiny lunch & can loose my job for even talking to her, not to mention I don't know this area well, other than what I buy, that she should try some one with a blue vest on, they are on the clock. "Oh, sorry, that man said you would help, I just need to find the so & so?" I hate it when they expect an answer any way. "So I say, I don't work over here, but my guess is it's so & so, but it could be a seasonal item, meaning they only have it for a Holiday. She still thanked me & I chewed out the new guy later on.
Once when I got off of work, I was shopping for my self & my roommate, I had a jacket on, so people wouldn't think I was working. ( I think it's the worse when some one knows you work there & your just shopping or getting a check on your day off & they ask you for help any way) My arms were loaded down with TP, food & cat stuff & still some one was yelling at me to help them. They huffed & puffed in my face & demanded I help them. I was angry so I said, "Why don't you find some one who works here, I am shopping & don't what your even talking about!" His face went purple & he mumbled an apology.
My roommate & I were shopping at our local Jewel. I was debating on what creamer I wanted for my coffee, when an elderly but nice gentle man asked us to help him find...I think it was sour cream. I had on a green jacket, & Acen shirt & a White Sox cap on, so How he could think that was beyond me. "I politely say, "I am sorry Sir, but I don't work here & have no idea, but it has to be near the creamers, so keep looking, " He apologizes & cracks up, because it ended up being right in front of him.
