Bags take up room, which there is not a lot of, and cameras...I'm not too sure but it may have to do with people being hit by cameras, the location of the rave, or the DJ not wanting to be recorded.
Acen 2011: I lost my red kodak camera. If you found it, PLEASE contact me. I really miss it.

Why would you want to bring a bag into the rave? You are there to dance, not hold onto your bag. Plus, you could get things stolen. It's dark in the rave and things can easily be stolen without anybody noticing. Plus, people could bring in things such as weapons, drugs, etc. Hopefully no one would do this, but it is possible. With the line being so long, bag check would just make waiting so much longer. Unless you wait in line a few hours or so ahead of time, it usually takes a long time to get in. Why would you want to wait even longer?

Hi Everyone!

We’re working hard to bring a great convention this year to Rosemont, and want to give you some updates.
....
IRT would like to remind our attendees that no bags, purses or backpacks are permitted into concerts, dances or other major events without prior authorization for a medical need. There will not be a bag-check at the door -- if you bring a bag into the line, you will be asked to take it back to your room. Also, cameras and recording equipment will not be allowed in the concerts and dances. If you are seen with these devices inside the concerts or dances, you will be removed from the concert or dances.

Can’t wait to see you at the convention!

Assistant Department Head of Communications for Registration

Why would u need a bag? Uh, to have ur camera gear in of course! Not everybody goes to the rave to dance. And what does "major event" mean?? This is starting to smell like the IRT fiasco of two years ago.

Do you want to risk getting your camera broken in a big event where there isn't a lot of space? People will bump into you and be careless around your stuff. What if someone knocks your bag over or steps on it? It will be their fault for stepping on it, but it will be your fault for taking the risk and not following the rules.

If I had a camera and camera stuff that was expensive, I wouldn't bring it in a place where people are pretty careless. You are going to have drunks, people hyped up on caffeine and what not. ACen doesn't want your stuff to be damaged.

Your attitude has been terrible and you have been rude the minute you started posting on the forums. You should try to be more nice.

If you're truly press for someone else, just remember you're representing that group. Things you say and do on the forums reflects the press group as a whole. I've been press in the past at other cons. Learned a lot of hard lessons from experience.

You are just such a little gem that I just am going to keep you in my back pocket.

I'm closing this topic for the moment and when someone from IRT wants to answer I'll gladly reopen it so they can submit their response.

Okay, so, here's the deal:

If you are a member of press, you should be talking to our Press department about camera and picture guidelines. They should be your primary contact in all matters. You can reach Press at press@acen.org.

For concerts and raves, cameras and video cameras are not allowed. Phones with cameras are allowed, but you will be escorted out if we see you taking pictures or video. (This is all standard procedure when it comes to musical acts, which I'm sure you all can understand. Remember, we bring in DJs to play the raves, which are as much concerts for them as the concerts are for the bands.)

For the Masquerade, cameras and video cameras are allowed. We encourage taking pictures and video of the cosplayers, because we know that cosplay is a big part of the con for many attendees.

Topic will be open for civil discussion.

If this turns into a complaint marathon I will close this again.

Policies that are in the program are not up for alterations. You can write a gripe/suggestion in the appropriate section as long as it is within good taste.

This is everyone's warning on this.

Thanks for replying. I'll try to be on my P's n Q's.

I understand the concerts part, it was that way before. But the rave thing makes no sense. Can u explain how this came about and what the justification was? There was no problem with cameras last year. Where is the harm in somebody taking a picture in there? I don't see how characterizing the DJ'ing as a "concert" makes any difference. I've always gotten some of my best con pics at the raves.

I'll have to talk about this in generalities because I'm not aware of the specifics of any of the contracts the convention has with any of our musical acts. Standard disclaimer applies: please do not take anything I am about to say as representing any specific clause or part of any of the contracts ACen may or may not have with our guests. (Legal stuff, you know.)

The reasoning that, since there was no problem with cameras last year, there should be no problem this year is flawed. Rules do change, sometimes in response to things that happen at con, and sometimes simply because the situation is different. Sometimes they become more restrictive; sometimes, less. (For an example of a less restrictive rule, see this year's rule on prop length.)

That said, I was simply pointing out that both concerts and raves count as musical events. The rule about cameras applies to musical events because performers (or their agents) don't want pictures, videos, or recordings taken of them and thus ask (or demand) that cameras (etc.) not be allowed into their performance space. This isn't a rule that IRT came up with just to be random, but is instead an implementation of something we were asked to do.

I hope this helps you understand how raves and concerts are both musical events and thus would follow similar guidelines.

Please keep replies constructive.

As Rabbi said, a DJ is a performer just like a band. Not exactly like but it's still a performer who may not want their picture taken. Hopefully someone who was involved in the making of this rule will post soon. Until then please be patient :)

I need everybody to stand down for a bit.

Bags I can answer quickly: that was my call, and it was in response to an overabundance of people bringing unwise things into the dances that were problematic and/or dangerous. One example that comes to mind is the fool dropping water balloons full of baby oil on the dance floor, another is the hotel water glasses that got smashed into the carpet.

Our options were to initiate a bag check, which would further back up the lines for the dance, or simply take bags out of the equation to lessen the potential for smuggling things into the dance that could hurt you. That and the number of people who got hit in the head with props were powerful deciding factors on this. If anyone has a better idea, I'm fully willing to listen to options, but a bag check would make the line even more unacceptably long than it already is.

The cameras issue specific to the dances I will revisit. I've already reached out to my heads of security, and the promoter (Eddie) to engage them and get their thoughts, and I'll take a look at the contracts in the next couple of days. Until then, feel free to discuss this, but please avoid taking the tone of 'you're screwing the attendees' because I assure you that none of us intend that. All I want (all any of us want, really) is for the con to be semi-sane, very safe, and super-fun for everybody involved, and I do see the point that eliminating the ability to take pictures in the dance could dampen the 'fun' part of that sentence by taking away your post-con memento of the event.

For concerts the camera issue is a requirement of our promoter and not under review.
Hope that helps. Feel free to email me directly at conchair@acen!
This is my signature. It is only one line.

Quick question, does the bag rule apply for the concert as well ? Just wondering because I wanted to pack a water bottle in case it gets too cramped and hot ( I realize they have water coolers at the dances but I have yet to attend/plan to attend one of the concerts until this year ) .

Thanks for that. I can understand a DJ not wanting his set bootlegged (I'm assuming this is the issue) however saying no cameras at all seems like nuclear weapons. Somebody can have a tape recorder in their pocket and nobody would be the wiser. Assuming the camera thing gets changed, a bag compromise could be to let photographers register or something and thus become trusted ravers. :D Of course we go there to take pictures cuz let me tell u raving with 10-20 pounds of stuff on ur back isn't exactly fun.

Check out some of my rave pics from SugoiCon to see what u would be missing out on. ;)

yes. the copy from the email is

"IRT would like to remind our attendees that no bags, purses or backpacks are permitted into concerts, dances or other major events without prior authorization for a medical need. There will not be a bag-check at the door -- if you bring a bag into the line, you will be asked to take it back to your room. Also, cameras and recording equipment will not be allowed in the concerts and dances. If you are seen with these devices inside the concerts or dances, you will be removed from the concert or dances. "
