Befriending Your Boss...on Facebook Would you do it?

My ex-boss and I used to be relatively close in age, and we were a super tight-knit group at work.
We are friends on both Myspace and Facebook, and were during the time I worked there.
I remember replying to one of his emails, and having a friend go "Are you REALLY saying that to your boss?" (I think it was something along the lines of "F*** off, Tim!" He kept calling me a tree hugger.)
LoL.
-shrugs- But then again, I also have pictures of me and the assistant manager where I worked holding lube and frowning at Walmart. She was great.
But I think in most cases, people aren't that close to the people they work with, especially their superiors. It probably in most cases isn't a good idea and would be more of a way for the boss to "keep tabs" on you rather than just to be friendly.

My job has actually just implemented a Facebook-like internal site for employees only to use, but they want us to personalize it with our own pics and info. It's just opening up a new way for people to get fired or for my company to try and wedge its way into our social lives, IMO. Despite how innovative it is and how good an idea it may be for another time, the way the employment market is, and how easily people are getting fired over over technicalities or minor infractions (so they don't have to do layoffs) it's a bad idea to get into right now.

He's a pretty cool person, but I think it'd just make things awkward. lol. I already feel kind of intimidated by him since he's so smart. I feel like
I have a harder time talking to adults who have this very intellectual air about them. Not that I think I'm stupid, but I'm just afraid I will say something
that they think is.

Reason? I made a vow that my personal life and my work life do not mix. although, I've gone out to eat with a bunch of people from work, including my supervisor and her husband. She even bought me two beers. Whoops.

I may be on good terms with my bosses, past and present (as in if I were to run into them at the grocery store, it'd be a pretty civil if not enthusiastic exchange of hellos and small talk - maybe a bit more conversation if time allowed), but it would be more than a little weird to add them to my Facebook. The way I see it is this: if there's a chance of them popping up in the References section, they don't get added. I don't even try searching for them. Granted, I don't do anything that would implicate me, nor do I usually say anything on FB that would bite me in the butt later, but at the same time, it'd be unnerving to know that my previous boss(es) can see what I may be up to. (I have a couple who likely wouldn't care, since Jamie and I see them at Wendy's and chat about random stuff anyway, but others....no.)

A previous boss that was awesome, sure. Its like befriending a current teacher.
Its a no-no.

I used to not have family on Facebook...until I realized that I really don't see or talk with them offline as much as I want to or should. (This especially applies to my relatives out of state, which is the majority of them.) Thankfully there isn't any intrusive behavior or anything on anyone's parts, so it's a nice system in this case.
Bosses are another matter entirely. My family and in-laws are all fairly close-knit (or try to be), and I'm comfortable discussing many different things on FB, even with the knowledge that my sister, mom, dad, relatives and in-laws can and might see it. (That said, I don't say anything that would cause my parents to call and scold me.) But some of these topics are better left between me and my friends and family. I'd rather not have my old bosses peeking into that.

I guess the does depend on your family. When I had family members as friends on Facebook, I was just bedeviled by them all the time. It was the comments of "you know eric, you really shouldn't announce things like this on the internet..." that drove me insane. My social and recreational life is my business and I can live it however I choose to. So, no family for me on facebook.

I do have one of my current coworkers on there, but even if my boss was on FB (which I don't think she is), I'm not sure I would. We get along GREAT (I love my current job to death) but while I don't say anything really bad (mostly moaning about feeling blah or whining that I have homework), I do have some really insane friends who say stuff that's a little... odd? I do have a few relatives on there, my cousins and one of my aunts, though I'd never have my dad as a friend if he were to figure out FB. Because he'd make comments - I mean, he found my MySpace page and yelled at me for the profile pic at the time. *rolls eyes*
I have a rule, I don't add people unless I know them from somewhere. I have a bunch of friends who were people I went to school with, lots of friends from cons (mostly Acen and Chicago TARDIS), and a few friends that I've never met in person but I talk to them a lot on LJ or elsewhere. I also have one of the professors from my current school on there, but I don't mind because she's awesome. When I was an undergrad I might not have friended current professors (if FB had been around), but my program kind of pushes use of social networking technology because that's where the users are (I'm working on my Master's in Library Science).

Yes and no, it depends on the situation. If someone's just harassing her for no reason, or anything like that, then I would do more than that.
I'd call the idiots up and rant about how stupid they are about talking like that to such a good women.
