Seeing that I have to go into Chicago this Tuesday for my annual one year check up to make sure I'm still cancer free. I was thinking that afterwards I'd go to China Town *weather permitting.* since I have an early appointment. Can anyone tell what places I should try to see and what places to avoid?

I would have posted sooner but I didn't want to do it until after the Chinese new year meet up.

There's a shop a friend pointed out to me called "Giftland". Has lots of random anime and hello kitty stuff. Worth a looksee. Also, check out any of the bakeries... the food is just awesome.

There are two parts to Chinatown. Old chinatown and chinatown square. Old Chinatown is the strip on Wentworth that make you feel like you've stepped into another country. Giftland is in the old part. There is a restaurant called Pho that serves amazing Vietnamese soup. I highly suggest eating there.

There is a Japanese candyshop in the square called Aji No Ichiban. There is another shop that sells a lot of Anime junk in the square that I can't remember the name of. Chinatown isn't all that big, it takes about an hour to explore all of it. I suggest just checking the whole thing out.

Definitely hit up a bakery, and if you're into cultural exploration there's a grocery store I'd recommend popping in and checking out, too.

In Old Chinatown, in one of the shop windows, there is a golden necklace of a sow with suckling piglets hanging off of her nipples.

Do. Not. Miss. That.

Also: In the same area there's a shop that sells swords and other sharp things. It's pretty cool.

CHINATOWN SQUARE! Best place ever! There are tons of little shops around, and even a few anime stores with pretty good prices. I bought a good amount of Final Fantasy posters for less than $15 dollars, and aside from anime stores, they have stores with cute little things you could buy that you really can't find anywhere else.

For food? I recommend eating at Joy Yee, also at Chinatown Square. There's even a little umm... "additional" Joy Yee a few stores down from it with good sushi and stuff, if you're up for that. They also have the best bubble tea, if you know what it is. Basically, it's a fruit shake with little black tapioca "bubbles" in it. It's really good, and even if you're not a fan of tapioca bubbles, you can still get the shake and ask for one without the tapioca bubbles. Though, I really recommend you try it with the bubbles if you like chewing things. xDDD.

Giftland is good for anime posters and scrolls, not sure about their figures which are obviously bootleg.

I'm pretty sure most if not ALL the stuff is bootleg in Chinatown...

Wan Shi Da Bakery is my number one choice of bakery, because you can actually sit down and enjoy their stuff after hiking around Chinatown in the cold (all the meetups I go to in Chinatown are in winter--I've never gone while it was warm out!).

Here's a useful list of businesses, though--http://www.chicagochinatown.org/cccorg/shop.jsp

The tea house across from Zodiac Square is nice too, but it's really trendy-looking. The milk tea is awesome though, and there's a nice variety of flavors.

Hidden away in the upstairs, there is an old video store. I never knew the name of it (then again I only know the name of like, 3 places in all of Chinatown not counting Joy Yee and Won Kow), but I saw some dusty old Kaiju movies. Maybe you could poke around and try to find it?

Chi Cafe is greeeaaat.

Every time I go there with my friend, he always orders food that he normally eats in Hong Kong and tells me, "I eat this for breakfast everyday when I goto Hong Kong."

It makes me laugh everytime.
Find out.

The bakeries are like....SOOOO YUMMY. And get a bubble tea. And there's a candy/snack shop in the back that let's you sample everything. It's next to a pretty cluttered gift shop that has a lot of cute plushes and toy and figurines and what not. There are a few clothing stores that also sell swords/canes, and the library is pretty awesome.

There is this bubble tea cafe somewhere in there. Their milk teas are amazing! I'm locked away at school atm, but I'll post the address when I get out. :3

Actually on a sorta same note, I'm going to be in Chicago this weekend and was looking for things to do in general. Any suggestions?

I heard you're going to be in town this weekend. Lots to do, whatever meets your fancy.

Bars, venues touristy things? What are you looking to do?
