I don't know about "American Dad", but the show "Moral Orel" often uses The Mountain Goats in their soundtrack, which I greatly approve of.
See, Moral Orel was awesome, until it got all dark. Well. Some of the episodes that are dark are still awesome....but mostly it makes me all depressed at the end of an episode, which, except for Joss Whedon shows, is NOT how I like my TV-watching to go.
As for songs, I prefer Family Guy's made up amusements. The one about the FCC had me peeing my pants (almost).

I felt the opposite about it. I thought Moral Orel was an awesome and unique show that people should take the time to watch purely because of the left turn it took. Had it not done that it would have died out as being just another crappy adult swim show with mediocre jokes and plot that you only watch because theres nothing else on at that time.

Liar. You had to change your pants.
I really like the direction that Moral Orel went, and it's still funny just in a very, very dark way.
Which I appreciate.
