Is that pink foam board stuff good enough to carve out details of a sword? Like Nariko's from Heavenly Sword. And is there a particular paint that would be best to use on it?

how much are you planning to use the sword? My brother and I used to beat each other with strips of it when my dad would finish insulating something, and they wouldn't last long (even against each other) and, I don't see why spray paint (possibly a couple coats) wouldn't work.
Kurogane= 98% --> I want a better cape, and I need the head thingy. (I don't see it making a comeback for 2011, but I'm still gonna finish it!!!
Germany= 2% --> have fabric and a wig. Just gotta style/cut it.
France= 30% --> got the pants and did a first draft coat. Have a wig but not sure I like it.
Gaz= 99% --> popped a seam at KollisionCon... v.v

It would just be for the Nariko costume. I wouldn't be swinging it around. But there are a lot of intricate details on the sword and I'm worried about how well that material does with carving.

the strength of foam may be incensed buy sandwiching board between sheets of foam
rod cores may also be added

add foam coat to surface to strengthen and finish
best result if foam coat is mixed with acrylic paint

By "intricate details" do you mean the shape of the sword or are you thinking of surface engravings?

Is this the sword in question?

Awesome advise, I was going to end up asking about that as well. Can I get that stuff at a local hardware type store like Home Depot?

Intricate meaning the engravings. And yes, that's the sword I'm attempting to do. I want to make as close a replica of the art as possible.

I'm not personally sure if a Home Depot would have something like a foam coat. May have to ask. I'd think hobby shop type place for sure, but...

As for carving/engraving foam. I've got no experience in that. Maybe TC has some input on that. Otherwise maybe pose the question to someonle like Shinteetah at www.andsewingishalfthebattle.com You might be able to get something using an Exacto knife and the good old standard #11 blade. The one worry I have is that foam *can* break and all that engraving work may get lost. You may have to go with something sturdier like wood, but you're talking heavy, and "big and heavy" may run afoul of IRT prop rules. They did ban the wood yaoi paddles even thought they were under the 4' rule if I recall.
