Hi, so I'm thinking of entering the masquerade for the first time this year and I'm about to start on my costume but before I begin I have a question. Now if I was to make the costume to scale then the diameter of the dress would be about 6 feet. Would that be acceptable or is there a width limit and if so, what is it exactly?

6 feet? Yeah that's pretty large. Also it would be a nightmare for you standing around in that, along with needing to get up the ramp to the stage.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not Masq staff

The size limit is far outside the hall limits; I think there's not much of a limit as long as you can safely get on/across the stage without damaging anything or collapsing the stage, but you should definitely check with the Masq staff about your cosplay anyway to make sure--I'm sure a dress can't do much damage.

Last year, there was an Optimus Prime that was 12 feet tall (or thereabouts) that managed to walk onto and off of the stage, and I was on the team in 2007 for a dragon-form Escaflowne that had at least a 6-foot wingspan and a 4-foot long tail coming off his body (making him about 9-10 feet long total).

You'll probably want to have one or two handlers for you if it'll be troublesome to maneuver onto the stage with the dress, though.

Yeah I remember trying to get that thing on to stage (I didn't know you were there ;o)

A 6ft dress I think might cause problems though, depending on how it is...done I suppose.

Yep, I was the Merle cosplayer.

Well, I can't say I know how she's going to make it, but your standard materials to make a dress bigger or wider or what not (steel boning, hoops, ridiculous amounts of fluffy underskirts) are pretty compression-friendly. Now if she's going non-standard, which is highly possible because that's what cosplayers do best, she may want to make it collapsible or able to be dismantled into smaller pieces for transportation purposes anyhow.

It's hoops that make it so large and I'd be able to take them on and off or even lift one side of my skirt up to get through doors and what not so I'm just worried about making it and finding out that there's a rule against it being so big after I've already made the dress.

The size sounds to be fine. The only thing to note is that the exit ramp will have both hand rails, giving you only about 4' of width to walk through.

We had a very large costume one year and they refused to let us on stage despite previous clearance... I'd sent them an email giving them details about how large the costume was and they said everything was fine, that they'd have a ramp, etc... but when we got there they weren't going to let us on stage.

This was about 2 years ago. And for the 3 years before that they refused to let our group get workmanship judged despite us having pre-registered for craftsmanship judging... not sure why Acen masquerade hates us xD

It's not fair to say that "ACen masquerade hates" you. There must have been a reason you weren't allowed, be it the cosplay itself or possible compliance issues:

maybe it was bigger than you originally said?
perhaps it was overly unsafe in some way to either the cosplayer, the stage, or the audience?
maybe it didn't fit the criteria? (must be based on anime/movie/game/etc. of Japanese origin/ hasn't won a previous competition/ etc.)
perhaps you were late or missed pre-Masq check-in? (the rules are very strict on that)
group leader wasn't present?
didn't fill out the form(s) correctly?
no reference materials for judging?

...but no one is going to be able to even guess why if no one even knows what the cosplay was (or at least how big). Someone had to tell you something besides just "No," and coming into this thread and griping that you were treated unfairly without explaining in detail why you feel that way is basically just trolling. If you have a valid complaint, you could have started a new thread instead of bring up a years-old problem in someone else's.
