I am just curious ...

Isn't it true that in Japanese culture, the number 13 is lucky? I understand this is not a Japanese convention, but Anime did start in Japan from what I understand.

I just thought it's a bit odd that since in the culture from which anime spawned, the number 13 is lucky but ACen10 is taking on the personna of unlucky/halloweenish.

Just my thought on this, please do correct me if I'm wrong :) Not trying to be rude or demanding a change, just thought I'd put my two cents in

I can honestly say that I don't know for sure.
But, I do have many friends who are ACen Staff.
And, from what I can tell so far; it's going to be halloweenish?
Or it's going to be a cool surprise in what they have in store for this year. C:

Well I think it will be lucky. I make my own luck.

It would be great if they had a person dressed up as Jason chasing people around with a chainsaw.

That would create quite a problem with the police...and scaring children as well. Theres a lot of youngins at this con. But out in a cornfield in bumblepluck woodstock and wonder lake IL, go for it! There was a group of guys that jumped out of a van out when I was trick or treating in middle school and the guys had chainsaws dressed as Jason and I laughed because my friends ran and I sat there saying "ooohhh so scarry" the chain was off lol Which is a good thing.

Zac, I'm horrible at acronyms :P What's KH?

It's just the theme, I think it's slightly backwards to make it a halloween/scary/unlucky theme where in Japan it mostly is a lucky number. Seems that the theme is based on american beliefs of 13 instead of Anime/Asian.

I think that they mean that back in Feudal Japan the number 13 was a hard year for people
to go through or something.
I cannot remember for sure.
But, when I went to Japan I took a trip
with my exchange mama and baba they took me
to an old resort where you had to wear kimono.
and they told stories about one time
during the 13 year they had a terrible time with
the rice crops.
neh?
maybe that has something to add to it.
I think it was a HUGE famen.

I think only 4 is considered an unlucky number in Japan and 7 is the lucky number.

13 is unlucky cause of our "Friday the 13th, no floor 13 in hotels, 13 is bad luck, 13 disciples, triskaidekaphobia"; it's just our old superstitions thinking that 13 is unlucky.

Although not as bad as 4, I read that 9 is considered to be unlucky in Japan cause it's close to a word that means pain/discomfort or something like that.

Big Red Disclaimer: These are my opinions as a longtime staffer/attendee of ACen; they are not ACen's official (or unofficial) opinions on the matter.

Even were 13 a lucky number in Japan (a claim I've not encountered support for), it stands that it's associated with bad things in the west. While our con is a Japanese culture convention, it is also run in the US and staffed by Americans and attended (for the vast majority) by Americans (and, for that matter, is an American-style con - Japanese cons are quite different). Considering that the theme is supposed to be a bit of fun, and everyone pretty much understands where it's coming from, I have no problems with having a spooky/scary/horror theme for ACen XIII.

Conventional wisdom holds that 13 became an unlucky number because it is the number of people at the Last Supper; people started avoiding gathering in 13s and then started avoiding any 13s.

4 and 9 are indeed considered unlucky in Japan, because one '4' <四・し> [shi] sounds like 'death' <死・し> [shi] and '9' <九・く> [ku] sounds like 'pain/worry' <苦・く> [ku]. I can't find any reference to 7 being a lucky number in Japan (though it certainly is pervasive in most cultures, whether good or bad).

Well the number 7 certainly has influences in a lot of cultures. Although, Japan does have the 7 Lucky Gods.

Well regardless of it being "lucky" or not, we should just focus on improving the con based on previous years. Besides superstitions are just that: superstitions. I have a black cat and nothing bad has happened to me besides life being well LIFE! You get the bad and the good its just that people like to blame things on whatever they can like a false idea called "luck". Thats like a jealous co-worker saying that one guy got a promotion because he is "lucky", but perhaps if that person thought about it that guy maybe could have worked his butt off and deserved what he got. Luck is just an excuse.

And if your "unlucky" thats another excuse. Whine whine whine, complain, complain. I know that people have "bad days" but they get better.

Thank you for taking what I said .... not in a bad way ^_^

Rabbi (sorry, don't know your name). I am very much aware that the convention is put on by americans, and in america, but isn't the point (well ... perhaps when ACen or any other anime cons first started) of the convention is to have fun (CHECK!) as well as be surrounded by the culture?

The culture of anime and of the con itself.

I vaguely remember 13 being at least somewhat lucky in some areas, I think Sensee told me that, I can ask her tomorrow to verify if people need.
Again, If I am wrong, I'm fine with that ... my memory is not known to be razor sharp at times :P

I suppose I also bring this up because it feels weird having ACen, the thing that has so much affected my future (in a good way) go more towards the spooky aspect ... all in good fun of course ... just odd though o.O
From the description, it almost seems like halloween in may.

Don't get me wrong, not trying to change it, just more create a discussion and see if anyone else feels the same ... or if I'm the only odd duck :P

I think 707 is quite unlucky. 'Tis the number of the Demon Lord after all.

(also i'm sure Rabbi is a name he answers to, just like alk and alkaren are ones I do)

Otherwise, why does it matter so much on the numbering? I understand you're, uh, concern. But we can't just jump ahead to 14.

On an unrelated note, who knows the reason Friday the 13th is considered unlucky? :D +history'd'd'd+

No worries; most people in the con circuit call me Rabbi anyway; it wouldn't be my callsign if I didn't want to be called by it.

I can't say definitively what the point is or isn't, and you're probably somewhere close to the truth. All I'm saying is, just because it isn't Japanese doesn't mean it has no place at the con.

Hey, my research was not exactly thesis-grade. For all I know, I missed a point. And, on ACen going spooky, we're just trying to have a bit of fun with the concept, and we hope you guys will go along for the ride. (Plus, who doesn't want Halloween in May? Twice the candy...)

Hey, from my viewpoint, Acen 13 is very lucky.

But then, I like Halloween stuff a lot, and horror, as well. And I run the video rooms. Lucky!

Personally, I'm not incredibly superstitious. There are exceptions to this (I won't kill crickets trapped in my domicile, and I catch them before putting them outside; I follow the belief that calico kitties are lucky, as mine and my tortie charges at the shelter tend to be), but aside from those I tend to shrug away superstitious beliefs. The black cat theory? I work with cats at a shelter, about a third of which are black. These kitties cross my path all the time; I haven't had bad luck yet. (I also own a black cat, she hasn't given me anything except love.)

That said, for 13, it has yet to become an unlucky number for me. (If anything, whenever Friday the 13th is coming around, it's Thursday the 12th that tends to give me trouble. No joke.) I'm looking forward to seeing how this theme goes with the con. XD

The 13th is not really an unlucky or lucky number in and of itself. It is how people see it that makes it fun. My mom was born on the 13th. I think the number is just that a number.

But as for the scary/spooky family friendly theme for this year. I just have to say we will never get a better chance to do something like this then this our 13th year of Acen. So even though we have to cross cultures a bit to do it, and it is an anime con, we want to have some fun with it. Plus this might attract more people who are into just comics.

So since we only get 1 13th Acen we have to have some fun with it.

Next year who knows what the theme will be. Acen the 14th- Love is in the air? Who knows. If you have an idea for the 14th pm me with it.

Till then we get to be a little creepy. Besides everyone so far loves Kit the werefox!!!!

From the description, it almost seems like halloween in may.

Well isn't Acen kind of like that? When trying to describe cosplaying to people one of my simple answers is cosplayers are people who feel Halloween shouldn't just be one day a year :)

Besides we're just tapping into the collective unconscious here. People here "13th" and think spooky, black cats and superstition. Maybe this will be a year you can't walk two feet without tripping over a Black Cat cosplayer (hee that would be fun!) Plus I am over the moon in love with the artwork on our postcards this year!!!! (I have one pinned up at my desk at work)

We're still in the early planning stages of the con but really, the 13th theme is just something to add to the regular fun of Acen. :) Though...you are giving me some ideas for my department! Heee.......
