Okay, here is my problem:

I need a gaming computer BUT
It cannot be custom made
And it can't be an "official" gaming computer (Like alienware...)

I am technically getting it for college. But my mother is helping to pay for the cost of college so she insists that it is strictly for college things.
Which is fine and dandy
But I want....to be able to use it for recreation too.

Does anyone have any suggestions between 800-1000 dollars?

It'd really help.

Flyff and Warhammer.

Maybe Pokemon World soon with a friend...

I said it.

I just ask you guys because I really don't know what makes a computer good for games....especially since I've never had a laptop.

Does your mother know about Alienware and its qualities that is suited for gaming? Because I remember reading a random article with a 900 something dollar alienware laptop. Don't quote me on that though.

She'd figure it out.
I guess after further research I need something with a decent graphics card and dual core of 2.2 GHz?
And....some RAM?

Seems your mom is pretty knowlegable on comps. I can't suggest anything, but getting a decent gaming specs comp will suck, since everything upgrades with the quickness. :/

I'm not sure on the system requirements for Warhammer.. but I can take a stab at it.

Definitely want at least a Core2Duo processor and an actual Video Card and not integrated graphics (Integrated will usually say integrated or Media Accelerator.. For a card it will say like nVidia 9400GS-M or an ATi xxxx).

I can post links later for good deals on laptops.. but in the mean time if you want you can check www.slickdeals.com and check out the hot deals forum and search for laptops.

That website will help you save money on stuff you're looking to buy, and help you waste money on stuff you're not looking to buy (>.<)

I would pass on an Alienware anyway. I haven't kept up with them, but ever since they first came out, it's definitely one of those things you pay for the name.

edit:

2.2GHz (depending on the processor)
at LEAST 2GB Ram
Higher end graphics card (not Integrated)

are things you will need (Just copying what you wrote down lol)

Thanks Relik. I looked that up and yeah, 2.2 GHz on a dual core is definitely needed. And thanks for the RAM. I had no idea how much I would need.Actually a Toshiba with all of the requirements is pretty affordable, and also would be good for schooling (So would any laptop. You only need the Microsoft Office pack, and wifi. lol)

Thanks guys. <3

honestly my best suggestion for you woudl be to wait for the new model of a computer to come out and they put the old model on clearance. That way you still get a fairly new machine at a good price. I picked up my laptop for like $500 off retail on clearance.

Yeah your biggest concern will mainly be the video card. Integrated vs. Dedicated makes a world of difference.

Most likely not.. it really all depends.. supposedly near fall there is supposed to be a new type of laptops coming out.. but they say that every year. If you're looking for something on clearance check out a Best Buy. The way their system works with that kind of stuff is like FlyingElf said, if a newer model comes out, they usually automatically clearance the Old model because old models sitting on the shelf is dangerous.

Dedicated is better.

Integrated is something that is built into the laptop. It usually shares RAM with the rest of the computer, and not as high powered.

Dedicated is something that is it's own card within the laptop. It usually has it's own RAM so it's not sharing with the rest of the computer.

I need help also!!!!

I need a new laptop (well, not really NEED).
I'm not necessarily looking for a gaming laptop but I need something with enough beef for rendering. I do some PC gaming but I'm not a graphics whore.
What I need it for: 3D modeling/animating, print design, light video editing (not very much, primarily for 2D animation)
Preferences: DDR3 memory, 7200rpm hard drive, 1GB graphics card, maybe looking for something with a quad core.
Price range: $1,000 to 1,800
I look at Macs but they're not that great for 3D and you can get a much powerful PC for the same price.

I'm looking at this HP laptop and this Gateway.

If anything, go for the HP.

Are you actually going to IUB next semester?

alienware = over priced.

on your budget, your best bet would be to build it.. desktop wise you could get a nice quad core system.
or I would suggest go with HP. you can get a decent computer for your price range.
stay away from dell, their support is horrible.
oh yea, dell owns alienware now.

do you really need a laptop? are you going to be mobile a lot?

what you should tell your mom if she asks is that a gaming laptop is built better and will last longer than the basic computer just used for college.

Look into Asus, for sure. They make excellent computers that are very nicely priced. I have an Asus laptop I bought a few months back and I love it, and I can play games on it great. And, something that is very unusual for laptops - especially for the price that Asus ones are - it has a dedicated graphics card, not some crappy integrated one.

LOVE IT.

I've heard that too, but really had few problems with my gateway. I think my only complaint is that it can overheat if I do some high end gaming for long periods of time...

GAH >.<

Oh and alienware= over-priced AND just a Dell in a pretty wrapping.

I had a Gateway and it did everything but explode. And we didn't even download anything onto it.

Honestly I'd stick with Toshiba or Hewlett-Packard. Those two are notoriously hardy.

My HP worked for forever until I downloaded Limewire....>.< (Don't ever do that >>)
I'm on it now and it is a piece of total poop, but admittedly my fault.

but my grandma just got this HP laptop and it was a DREAM. Oh god. >_> <_<

The worst thing about getting a laptop now, though, is having Vista shoved down your throat. All laptops you buy in the store or from official websites now are gonna have Vista.

Not necessarily for gaming. Just something relativity powerful for 3d/video rendering.

I'm jealous of your budget. <_<

It seems you may have to -ah- save up a little more before you can consider a quad core though....

But try this one:
http://www.toshibadi....to?poid=432324

It's what I would get if I COULD get a gaming laptop and didn't want to spend over 2k on it.
I've read great reviews online.
Plus it has higher feet on it for better ventillation.
But it's heavy and not good for carrying everywhere.

I can't be anything but wary of Toshiba laptops - especially Satellites, as my old laptop was one and it failed pretty hard on it.

Pretty sweet, not too expensive. Little over your budget, though.

Bit cheaper.
