Good to know my height won't determine if I can be an IRT! I hope to be the shortest one EVER! lol I can't wait to hear from someone, I'm excited!

It might take a while, because they have to go through the applications and respond to people, but I know they wanted to get started on this earlier, which is one reason they posted the application earlier this year! *hand out pocky* Would you like some Pocky (the candy, not me, don't even go there) while you wait?

I'm currently Registration Staff, but I'm thinking of transferring to IRT. How would I go about doing so- just send in the application and inform the Department Heads of each, or what?

Yup! Fill out the IRT app and let your department head know that you've applied to transfer and that you'll let him know for sure when/if you're accepted into IRT. You wouldn't technically have to let them know until you've been accepted, but it's a nice thing to give them a heads up that you're thinking of switching departments. :)

There you go. Sometimes the answer is just that simple.

The only questions left are... what sub-department will you apply for, and how many friends are you bringing into the fold with you?

Why would anyone need to take pocky as a bribe when I GIVE everyone on IRT pocky? *shrug* And I actually don't like most pocky and since I have to watch my sugar levels I don't eat a lot of candy anyway.... I have more fun bringing it for everyone else!

do you take pre orders?

I take pre-orders, but only for IRT & EMRT, unfortunately... otherwise it gets too expensive! Since I'm hypoglycemic, I normally try to stick with things like dried fruit and crackers and sunflower seeds, or fresh fruit if I can get it, to help keep my sugar levels up when I'm running... candy is great to up sugar but it's also great to cause sugar to crash, which isn't so happy for me. ^_^

I'm glad for that! And no thank you to the pocky, I really don't really like it. Kinda weird, huh? It just tastes like stale bread and bad candy to me =/ But thank you for the offer ^.^

LOL.... I actually don't eat a lot of pocky. Some of the flavors taste good, some don't. And for IRT/EMRT members, when I put up my request list closer to con for what people want, I also have a section for "things other than pocky" since I understand that some people don't necessarily like it, or can't have it for health reasons. Gypsy has trail mix instead of pocky, and you shoulda seen him scarf it down on Thursday night. *giggle* It's supposed to be a snack at the end/middle of your shift, something to cheer people up. Not a meal or anything big, but I know that sometimes a little of something you like can help make you feel a little less stressed/tired/frustrated, which is why I started passing it out to IRT before I was on IRT! You should've seen the faces of some of them who had no idea who I was or why I was randomly handing them pocky while they were working. ^_^

Wow that's really nice! Good to know that some people don't like it. I went shopping the other day and my bf (who is also applying for IRT) bought a crate, Yes, a CRATE, of strawberry pocky. I was tempted to crush it up and make it into a cereal lol!

Ah, another question. I'm having a baby in January so I was wondering (if I get to be IRT) when the meetings start? Cause if they're before then, I'll be waddling my way into those meetings with my gargantuan belly. XP

And because it seems like so many people are interested in being helping out, what are the chances of getting the job? I don't wanna get my hopes up but it's so exciting just the thought of being able to help out! What sort of advantages do certain first-time applicants have over others?

I have a quick question that's been on my mind since school started. Would the interviews most likely be on a weekend?
And would we know a week in advanced? My job is really iffy about taking days off in a certain time period. :(

Last year, interviews were on Saturdays that we had meetings or training scheduled. And you should know at least a week in advance (probably more) for when you'd be getting interviewed, so hopefully that won't be a problem.

Like I posted in the EH thread. We're still 9 staff over this years staff cap. We cut staff by 10 because we were over staffed and a lot of staff had nothing to do >.< So atm Reg staff are welcome to swap departments just let me know you're doing it :)

out of curiosity, for those of us who applied for IRT, around when will we be finding out if we were accepted or not?

(I have to inform Bloo whether I'll be leaving reg or not, that's the main reason I want to know ><)

It would be incredibly surprising if at least the bulk of the interview dates weren't on Saturdays. You should know several weeks in advance when those dates are.

Since those who are in charge of the interview schedule haven't divulged it yet, there's no way to know this. I'll keep this in mind and see about getting an answer as quickly as possible.

I hope that excitement can last for a while. We opened our app process extra-early this year, which means that it'll be a good bit until you hear back at all. I can tell you that your apps are in and being looked at - it may just be a while until we start up the actual interviews.

I submitted an application, but my phone number has changed since then. So...should I fill out a new application or send an e-mail to the head or something?

Good for you! It's not the last minute, though it would be nice to have more people applying more quickly as we're trying to get things up and rolling early this year. We've still got lots of space, though, so people should keep sending in apps!

lol that made me giggle! Man, I can't wait to hear from someone.
Question: Both my boyfriend and I applied to be IRT and we're debating getting a room and badge now or waiting to hear back from someone, because I hear there is possible free rooming for IRT. Our only fear is that all rooms with be booked if we're not accepted. So is it advisable to get a room and badge now or wait a little longer?

My advice... if you really want a room in the Hyatt and don't want to worry about it, reserve one but make sure that you can cancel it if you need to. But don't buy a badge. It might take a little while to hear back from IRT, but you'll hear back and you'll probably be accepted. If not on IRT, for some reason, you'll probably be able to get another staff position.

So... maybe on the room, but NO on the badge. ^_^ Don't pay for a badge.

Oh... I'm not sure how IRT is doing rooming this year... I'm out of state so my situation is a little different, so I can't guarantee that everyone on IRT gets a room. They'll probably go over that when you interview, or you can email Viper with questions offline at viper.irt@gmail.com

I went through this last year... I know it's frustrating, but everything will work out!

*huggles*

So... damn. It would seem we turned a lot of people on to IRT last year. Thats kinda scary...

I feel mildly obligated to toss in a few pennies worth of advice for anyone who has been considering joining the Tunnel Rats since I've been doing it the longest (only one other person has been on as long as me, and he's more elusive than I am).

1) When Rabbi said you need feet of steel, he WASNT kidding. Your feet will ache incredibly come saturday night. I reccomend wearing your most comfortable shoes with at least 2 pairs of Dr. Scholl's inserts.
2) More of an addendum of the first point, Rabbis pros and cons and such earlier in the thread are pretty damn accurate. We're constantly running around like a chicken with our head cut off, things change faster and more often than you can really imagine - and thats assuming that they were rock solid-plans to begin with, and the chances of you getting sleep are few and far between.
3) Equal parts Pro and Con, if you get on Escorts you get to work with me.
4) I have a feeling a lot of people will be rather confused as to why you need a few years experience on IRT before you join the TR team. So, I'll help alleviate that. For the most part our job is supposed to be sticking to the back tunnels (which you guys arent allowed in, just for the record), dealing with Guest Relations and the guests themselves. Thats in an ideal world. There are times, however, when the tunnels will take too long because a panel ran long, or when you need to assist regular IRT at crowd control, or prop checks, or a multitude of other things. THIS is why IRT training is a necessity. We are still technically IRT - we wear the vests afterall - and we need to do our part at upholding the exact same customer service that they do. I'm pretty sure more than a fair share of the ACen crowd has seen me on Friday and Saturday nights directing traffic and helping out with the massively long lines for the Soap Bubble and other events or, more commonly, outside at the smoking section. Which brings me to another point...
5) Not only do you need your wits about you, but you need to have the entire hotel memorized. Or damn near. As an Escort, its scary how many people will come up and ask you where a panel is or something and while you may know how to get there by yourself, that doesnt do anything for the con goers. At a more TR/GE related level, knowing the entire hotel layout also helps because Nabeshin can evade even the most seasoned Tunnel Rat (self included). Unless you know the little nooks and crannies of the hotel - trust me - it will be very challenging to locate him and get him where he needs to be. Murloc and Zabet didnt believe me when they first joined... I have a feeling their opinions have since changed.

All in all, its good to see people so enthused about helping the con. For those that are seeking to join IRT - awesome, and for those that are gonna give Escorts a shot... good luck. We play hard, and work even harder (unless you ask any other branch of ACen... and then its usually the other way around). Look forward to seeing you guys come con.

1) When Rabbi said you need feet of steel, he WASNT kidding. Your feet will ache incredibly come saturday night. I reccomend wearing your most comfortable shoes with at least 2 pairs of Dr. Scholl's inserts.

I'll agree with Irish on everything but with a few comments...

Regarding shoes... do what's best for YOUR feet. I have high arches and inserts actually do more damage if I'm standing for long periods of time. Walking is fine, but I can't have inserts if I'm going to be standing forever... which you will do a lot of if you are ever on Escorts.

And Nabeshin... *facepalm*

Before acen I printed out mini-maps of the hotel and convention center, so if I had to find a room that I didn't know, or if a congoer asked me, I had a portable guide. It was really really helpful!

Escorts is fun & awesome, and Irish is great to work with, but it's not a place for anyone on IRT for the first year. I was lucky and came into IRT with experience but most people don't.

Other than that... good luck & have fun!

*hugs*

Agreed!

Another good idea is to bring a spare pair of shoes and extra socks. It does help to put on a pair of fresh shoes after wearing and running around in the same pair all day. Make sure all shoes are broken in and not brand new.

If you cant memorize where all the events are at least know where the main events are and carry a program booklet. Even being on escorts, I was still asked quite often where things were going on and how to get to places.

And working with Irish and Pocky was awesome! :D Correction: working with all IRT is awesome!

Hi All,

I wanted to let everyone know what the status of IRT interviews is. As of right now we have roughly 150 applications and we are currently reviewing each application. I hope that after this upcoming weekend, we will be starting with our interviews. We will still be accepting applications until a date later to be determined. To give everyone a FYI, IRT is only allowed 174 operatives this year. So if we get 200 applications, dont feel bad if you do not get selected. We would love to have 200 operatives come time of con but alas, we cannot. If you have submitted your application already, please be patient and keep checking your email as we will be sending notices out as to when we will be doing in-person interviews and phone interviews. Remember keep sending in those applications.

Thank You,
