That works! Thanks for giving the heads-up.

Quick question, though, just out of curiosity: if we can't transfer into Escorts, would we be able to do something like Dispatch? Or are we strictly limited to being standard operatives?

No problem! And if you aren't able to transfer into Escorts in your second year you could defiantly do something like Dispatch! You may be able to do Dispatch your first year, too, but I would need someone else to confirm that! :3

So does that mean, then, that since I'm not eligable and that's what I applied for, that I should email and say that I want to switch to applying for Dispatch? Or, like Saphrinka asked, are we not allowed to apply for that as a 1st year IRT?

Again, I think you can apply for Dispatch as a 1st year IRT, but I would need someone else to confirm that (Riker? Rabbi?) I would also think you would be fine leaving your application as is, though it will probably be brought up during the interview process during which time you can say you'd be interested in Dispatch or a certain IRT shift (Days/Mids/Nights).
I like that there is such an interest in Escorts and Dispatch! Our long hours and different set of tasks aren't scaring people away - looks like we've got some troopers on our hands for 2010! :D

Is an application required for other departments? If so, when will those be available?

If I'm out of the loop on normal IRT-stuff because of being a tunnel rat, then I'm in a dark, dark room when it comes to other departments. :P IRT opened their applications very early this year, as they usually open them closer to the end of the year. If I recall correctly, for other departments, there is a general staf application, on which you specify the department you are interested. Again, that was out in the fall last year, if I'm awake enough to recall.

I'm really glad to see so much interest in staffing (not just in IRT, but I definitely do like that!) It's a great way to see a different side of the convention and work from the inside to make it the best convention it can be! It can be hard work, but I think its great fun and the friends you make are like family! :D

Zabet, thanks for being so on top of this thread.

To confirm: no other sub-departments have an eligibility requirement, but each has its own qualities that it looks for in an op. For example, Dispatch requires someone who doesn't freeze up in a crisis and who can extrapolate well. On a personal note, I'm glad to see such interest in Dispatch too. Since we plan to expand our staff this year, I'm looking forward to meeting and working with all of you.

In the event any other sub-departments post requirements, I will keep my sub-department summary updated.

For ways to get on staff in other departments, keep an eye on the Help Wanted section of the forums.

I'm also excited to see so much early interest in joining IRT (be it Escorts, Dispatch, or regular Ops).

*also thanks Zabet for relaying the new Escorts requirements to the forums*

And I would like to point out that even Standard Ops aren't ordinary! Being an IRT Op is a lot of fun and a lot of work no matter what you're on... it just depends on what you would like to do most and what you're best at.

Dispatchers need to be organized and good at communication. They need to be clear-headed and be able to think on their feet, and should also have a great memory.

Guest Escorts need to be polite to the guests all of the time... yes, you get to meet them, but you have to remember that they are still Guests no matter what, and you need to keep that polite face on. And dealing with Managers isn't always fun... you have to be able to keep a smile on your face no matter what.

Standard Ops and Ops on Dances & Concerts get to see more of the con then Dispatchers or Escorts... but you need to be able to politely stop attendees from doing things they shouldn't, and you need to be able to diffuse situations before they get out of hand... or know how to best react when things do get out of hand to keep it from getting worse!

I really don't want anyone to think any any Op is better than another, or any sub-department is better than another. They're all different and take different personalities. Some people would do well in all, but most people would do better in one or another.

Myself... I was on Escorts in 2009 but I'm actually asking to switch to Midshift for 2010. I like working with people and so I'd like a chance to interact with Congoers instead of Guests, and I also want to see more of the con. It's good to try different things and see what fits you best. So no matter what sub-department you apply for and what you are assigned to, you'll be a very important part of the IRT family!

A lot of people are still stuck in the "which should I go for?" stage, it seems. I've added an "If... then this sub-department is right for you." part to my descriptions above.

If you're not sure, though, go for Rules Enforcement. This is where most people will be assigned, and it's good fun. If you decide you want to try your hand at something else, you can always cross over next year.

Rabbi, perhaps you can add something about needing to have already been on IRT/Escorts for the Escorts description, since there is a prereq this year.

EDIT: Just saw it in there, thanks!

Yes you can stay registration until you know if you're picked up by IRT. Reg atm is about 10 people over staffed so if any of registration is wanting to switch departments but isn't because you're worried about leaving reg without staff please feel free to switch. We are not removing anyone but we are suggesting those who want to switch to IRT, Panels, Programing etc consider it and don't worry about leaving reg without staff, we have plenty >.<

It will be a little while before you hear anything because the apps will still have be looked through. The application process might be faster this year.

I know that applications are being noted as they come in, but, to be honest, we're just getting on our feet for 2010 and probably haven't even had a chance to start sorting through the applications. I'm not in charge of the application process, so I don't know too many specifics, but hopefully there will be more news on this soon. We want to start our interviews sooner and have more time for training, because we have more spots for people this year than last.

Keep those applications coming! Sign up your friends! Remember, Kit wants YOU for IRT! ^.^

I put in my app the day it came out via email, as I applied last year, but less than perfect conditions for work prevented me from going, but I'm definitely in for the standard op this 2010. IRT <3

I'm considering applying, but I have a quick question. I'm currently 17, but I turn 18 in December which means I'll be that age by the con. Would I still be eligible to apply?

Yes. You have to be of appropriate age by the time the con starts, and you would be. Go forth, apply!

I have a quick question. I just put in an application (and my boyfriend is putting one in too!) and he is saying there is no way that IRT will accept me because I'm too little. I'm 4'10, 110 pounds. Will there be any discrimination against us vertically challenged folk?

No way. IRT ops shouldn't need size on their side; we look for customer service, not bouncing ability, and definitely not height.

Plus, one of our Shift Commanders is, well, not quite as short as 4'10", but fairly short, and she can clear a hallway quicker than anyone else on the team.

I'm only 5'2" and I'm on IRT! And there are people shorter than I am... I think Pixie's shorter and she can be scary!! (I <3 Pixie but would never want to be on her bad side)

Besides, as short females, we have power that larger IRT don't. I "cute" my way out of situations... last year I confronted some line jumpers in an autograph session and they ended up apologizing to me as they left the line... being cute & bubbly when you're dealing with congoers works really well for me!

would you ever take pocky as a bribe?

Why would anyone need to take pocky as a bribe when I GIVE everyone on IRT pocky? *shrug* And I actually don't like most pocky and since I have to watch my sugar levels I don't eat a lot of candy anyway.... I have more fun bringing it for everyone else!
