Definitely go and see the convention in full your first year, and decide if you want to staff for your second. Especially because this is your first (anime) con.

While it's awesome to see someone eager to help (and it is!), you want to know the lay of the con and have the freedom to go wherever you want. Once you start staffing, there is no guarantee you'll get to see any given part of the con (though our Department Heads try very hard to make that happen if you request it).

Wait a year, and we'll be waiting for you. ^^

Amen to that. I, even though I loved the thought of staffing my first year, would have never dreamed of it. what's the fun of staffing a convention is a) you know nothing about it or how it might run or b ), what if you don't even like the convention or what it contains? Be observant on how the staff operates, or maybe even stop by the gofer hole for a few hours to get acquainted to the staffing side of things. It's been a fun ride though, I'll tell you that much. ;3

Just wondering would it be wise for me (1st time this anime convention goer) to apply this year or should i go at it full strength this year and next year try out for staffing?

I will add a third vote of agreement, it would be best if you go as a "regular" attendee first to gain familiarity. Consider it part of your early stage staff training. A secondary step of being a volunteer or gopher at this or another similar con (I don't recall if you mentioned if this was your first con, or just your first time at this con) could be done next. Being on formal staff does require a fair amount of commitment, sepecially in terms of time. Different areas have different schedules, and you could be looking at anywhere from say a 2 hour-long to 8 hour-long shift. And anytime of the day or night (again depending on department). And that is not including the pre-con meetings that started in January for a May convention (although many of those meetings are not absolutely required - depends again on department and your position within that department).

Not meaning to disourage anyone. But you should know what you are getting into, and be willing to commit to it. There are demands to meet, but the payoff is great too. You get out of it what you put into it, and more.

Understood and will do i will wait a year and try and join the staff my 2nd year of the con, no worries about the times and long shifts Obakasan i usually only sleep around 4 hours every day on my good days (hehe yes yes i know i need to sleep more but i have trained my body over the years (dont know why though lol) to sleep less hours and still feel the same after sleeping for 4 hours to even 8 hours)
But yes i do agree with you on that i need to get the lay of the land on my first Anime Con, and enjoy myself and 2nd Con i will be ready.

Hello everyone! I've been accepted to IRT already but I recently got hit by a car.... lol and I most definately broke my leg. I lost my old email's so if I could get an email address or a phone number so that I can talk to someone about when I'll be off my crutches and back on my feet so I can still work acen 2010 I would really appriciate it. I don't want anyone to think that I signed up and did'nt follow through with what I told them I was going to do, I would still love to work IRT this year and years to come without having any bad vibes with anyone.

Thanks,
Tantilas

Viper or Mika might be able to jostle you around. Send an email to irt [at] acen [dot] org with your details. they might be able to still get a spot for you. (I hear dispatch has a lot of sitting onvolved ;p)

Unless you're the Dispatch Supervisor. Then it's a lot of running around!

Dispatch is full, but if we need to take on one more, I won't say no.

I could always go on the floor if Dispatch needed to make room for someone with a disability or injury. Or I could be roaming dispatch. Or I can just be quiet and hide in my little corner so Rabbi doesn't remind me that Dispatch is where I belong and I'm going to love it. :P Love you Rabbi.

Seriously though, Rabbi does run around a lot. I've seen him. It amuses me. Poor Rabbi.

We don't do mobile dispatch except in case of evacuation. Not anymore, at any rate. Also, that's a much more positive attitude. I'm proud of you, Pocky!

Seriously, though, Tantilas, get a good recovery in and we'll place you where is most healthy for you. The medics wouldn't let us do otherwise.

You guys are awesome! I'm going to send them an email right away, hopefully i'll be able to get back on my feet by the time the con starts but I don't think i'll be able to move around too much lol. If there is an opening I would be more than willing to take it, I was uber excited when I got onto IRT and as soon as I got in the accident I just though "crap there goes IRT" lol but if I can still go help out I'd love to.

There are non-movement or not-too-much-movement sections of IRT... Administration, Prop Check, Dispatch, etc. Like Rabbi said, we take care to put people where they physically can work. Otherwise the Medics would be out to get us.... and you don't EVER want to piss off a Medic. Especially THE Medic!

I've always wanted to do IRT, but I like cosplaying so much, that I don't think I can do it. Maybe when I get tired of cosplaying (who knows when that will be) then I'll do IRT :)

You can go into a different department where cosplay is acceptable like Registration. It's a fun department ^.^ so you don't have to sacrifice cosplaying to be on staff.

This is the thread for 2010. As far as I know, the applications for 2011 haven't been opened yet. There is usually a separate topic if they do.
