Over in the Hentai Recommendations thread, I got to talking about the yaoi joke in Cloverfield's deleted scenes, which got me to thinking (uh oh): there's a lot of anime refs increasingly in movies. For instance, there's Evangelions in One Hour Photo...and am I the only one who watched the new Star Trek and thought the Romulan monster ship looked a lot like a Chulip from Martian Successor Nadesico?

Any other obscure anime refs people have run into lately?

Remember when Dawson's Creek started talking about Pokemon? as well as SNL when Jennifer Aniston and Will Ferrell did a Pokemon skit.
In Horton Hears a Who, there was an anime-inspired scene in a 2D dream sequence.

Lupe Fiasco is a big anime fan. If you listen to his track he mentions Lupin The Third. Ghostface Killah's video Daytona 500 used clips from Speed Racer to make this pretty cool video

There was a South Park episode devoted to the initial Pokemon craze a decade ago, called Chinpokomon.

I have a even better one. The episode where they got ninja weapons and pretended to be real ninjas and they turned intow warriors anime style. They even had a song which was funny.

http://southpark.wik...es_with_Weapons

Here's the lyrics for Let's Fighting Love from the episode and what its crudely translated to XD

Japanese

Subarashi chin chin mono
Kintama no kami aru
Sore no oto sarubobo
Iie! Ninja ga imasuuuuuuuu

Hey hey let's go kenka suru
Taisetsu na mono protect my balls!
Boku ga warui so let's fighting...
Let's fighting love! Let's fighting love!

Kono uta chotto baka
Wake ga wakaranai
Eigo ga mecha kucha
Daijoubu, we do it all the time!

English

I have a wonderful man-part
There is hair on my balls
Is that the sound of a baby monkey?
No! Ninjas are here!

Hey hey let's go! Getting in a fight!
The important thing is to protect my balls!
I am badass, so let's fighting...
Let's fighting love! Let's fighting love!

This song is a little stupid
It doesn't make any sense
English is all screwed up
But that's okay, we do it all the time

Also if you look in the first episode of Heroes look for a Sgt. Frog figure. In Linkin Park's "Somewhere I Belong" look for a Gundam figure. And in Breaking My Habit their whole video was done by Gonzo Animation I think.

Well there's the xxxholic/Tsubasa and Negima wallscrolls in Mirrors that I ranted about last year.

There's been a few anime references in Big Bang Theory.

There were a references in different episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The gold and white hamster and it's 10 year old owner that the daughter of the one scientist plays with in Godzilla Against Mecha-Godzilla are a nodded or may in fact be Laura and Hamtaro.

Also don't forget... In that episode, the animation style when they were pretending to be ninjas was similar to Dragonball.

And speaking of Dragonball, I have another one. In a Fairly Oddparents TV special, Channel Chasers, Timmy is obsessed with a Japanese action show called "Maho Mushi" which is based directly from Dragonball.

Robot Chicken had a skit where this tentacle monster was calling this japanese schoolgirl tellig her of all the women he violated she was the best, and he was hoping they would do it again sometime. The schoolgirl was like "Oh yeah ok. Whatever." LOL

I'm surprised that no one spoke about the anime christmas special on Robot Chicken. It referenced Dragon Ball (had Goku and Goten) and also referenced Akira (Mrs. Clause, lol). They also referenced Akira in the trapper keeper episode of South Park, and Dragon Ball in the South Park movie.

I've actually seen anime in "Law and Order" (briefly, though).

It was the "Criminal Intent" arc, with Goren and that one lady (I forgot her name), in the episode "Zoonotic". There's a scene where one of the would-be killers is attending a ritzy art show with his girlfriend-for-the-moment, and his accomplice suddenly shows up...in a Trigun shirt.

I had to do a double-take at that moment.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm surprised no one mentioned Madonna's "Jump" music video yet, where she dresses up as Mello from "Death Note". There's even an interview somewhere where she pretty much admits it.

In an episode of Family Guy, Brian accidentally sells Stewie's teddy bear. When Stewie finds out, he runs some tests on the dollar bill that was used to pay for it. When he completes the tests, a database file of the man who bought the teddy bear comes up. The file lists shows he watches most often on TV. One of the shows listed is Yu-Gi-Oh.

I don't know if it's a "reference", per se, since it wasn't intentional, but just a few minutes ago I was watching "Clean House", and as they were interviewing the father of the family, right behind him was this big Digimon toy thing...the Season One crew, too. :D

I know in Extreme Makeover Home Edition, one kid was into anime and they had a Japanese artist come in and drew/painted a character on his wall.

Oh yeah. There was this episode of "True Life" on MTV. I forgot the subject, but they interviewed this one girl, and they showed her room at one point. It was COVERED in anime posters/wallscrolls (and sparkly dragons, I think), and the biggest one was a Cardcaptor Sakura poster with Sakura and Tomoyo.
