Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (I'm not talking about Robotech)

Macross Plus (My all time favorite) - The artwork and animation is still amazing!

Galaxy Express 999 - A unique blend of sci-fi and fantasy that probably inspired many anime today. It's made by the same guy (Leiji Matsumoto) who did Daft Punk's Interstellar 5555.

Space Adventure Cobra - A classic space pirate series.

Patlabor (The series) - Prime example of how hand drawn mechs look so much better.

Violence Jack - Makes Fist of the North Star look like a kiddie show.

Fist of the North Star - Despite what I said above, still an awesome classic.

Otaku no Video - A short but fun OVA picking on otaku; much like Genshiken.

Golgo 13 - Anime's answer to James Bond with a bad-a&$ character.

Devilman - I suggest reading the manga before watching the OVA.

Guyver - The old OVA was so much better than the newer series.

I also would like to watch Iria as I thought the first live action movie (Zeiram) was pretty cool.

How are these lesser known shows?
I'm just a Mazinger in a rock and roll band!

Basically what I mean by "lesser-known shows" is anything that is just not talked about that much today, but may or may not have been popular back in the day.

True. All you hear about nowadays is Bleach and whatnot.
How about we talk about the really obscure animes, usually single episode OAV that weren't so popular.

Are you telling me you actually heard of most of these? That's cool to hear but no one recognized me when I cosplayed as Cobra and Robotech takes all the credit for Macross. I can't find many people that even know of Galaxy Express 999 either.

I've seen everyone of the titles mentioned so far so they don't seem lesser known to me. Realistically if a title is over five years old the recognition drops dramatically with the average fan.

IMO, there is nothing like Record of Lodoss War - an anime that does medieval and does it RIGHT.

That is because you have to be old like me.

BTW, I am currently watching Queen Millennia, the movie, from 1982.

You have that on DVD? There's a fansubbed series of that I've watched a bit of.

BOX Fansub. I like the movie more because it was directed by Masayuki Akihi who directed Galaxy Express 999 and also because of the soundtrack that Kitaro did.

When a manga hasn't been turned into an anime, that would be lesser known/obscure (most of the times).

Yes, it was, and I paid an arm, a leg for it again when it came out on HD-DVD. I wonder how many copies of it I have?

And God I hated Bandai Visual!!!!! I dropped about $270 on Patlabor 1 and 2 and Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise.

Box Torrents. The movie has been almost impossible to get for decades, and usually the quality of the video sucked, but now the fansub is easy to get at Box Torrents.

Oh, and it was reviewed by Daryl Surat, of Otaku USA, on the Anime World Order Podcast at http://animeworldorder.blogspot.com/.

It's against forum rules to point out where to get illeagal downloads. Staffers should know better.

Hmm...it has never been licensed, sold or distributed outside of Japan, and most of all it has never even been translated into English by any company on the face of this planet! If you do a google search it is only available on a Japanese only DVD and only with Japanese subtitles

So, I would agree with you if anyone on the face of this planet sold it with English subtitles or if it was licensed in the US. Oh, and did I post a link anywhere in my message to the torrent? The link I posted was a link to the Anime World order podcast, and last time I checked it was perfectly legal to share links to podcasts.

So, what are you getting me for again? Mentioning the word fansub?

You aren't supposed to mention anything about where to get illegal downloads, whether you put a link or not.

I would agree with you if it had been available anytime in the last 27 years as an English sub, and I even would agree with you if someone was going to release it in the next 27 years, but I do not see that happening.

If I get banned, so be it, cause in this case I really don't care. I am not taking any money out of the hands of anyone and I would be happy to put $100 into the hands of Toei if they ever decided to release it, but that is never going to happen, and for historical reasons this is a movie that should be seen.

And please Toei release it!

Gunbuster or Otaku no Video?

Both were okay, but Evangelion was better than both, IMHO.

I don't neccesarily wanna go Full Metal Copyright Lawyer with anybody about this thread (seeing as it's already moving on), but this is from the forum guidelines. To wit:

"Absolutely NO links, ads, or pointers to warez, Hong Kong or other bootlegs, licensed anime episodes, or fansubs or fansubbers with licensed anime content. Anyone in violation of this rule is subject to immediate temporary ban for the first offense. Any subsequent postings of this nature will result in a permanent ban from these forums. NO EXCEPTIONS."

Thing is, I don't know intense the DMCA* rules are concerning material that's copyrighted in Japan that's not readily available in the US under a US/north American licensing contract. If the phrase "licensed anime content" is intended to apply to only stuff that is available here commercially, this might not be a problem. However, if the DMCA allows Japanese companies to come calling with their legal departments for unlicensed material in countries other than Japan, this might be a real problem.

(*The dreaded Digital Millenium Copyright Act, of course. Feel free to blow a raspberry at the screen after you read this.)

Not quite. Merely providing a link to a potential source is.

This is probably to cover MAPS/Acen's tush concerning any potential lawsuits, but I see no problems with such a rule since not having such a rule could be grounds for Anime Distributor X suing MAPS for allegedly facillitating video piracy.

Anime I like is pretty much anime no one watches any more being that I've been "out of the game" for quite some time. So here are a few of my "golden oldies":

Golden Boy - I wish it was longer than six episodes... it's hilarious.
Wings of Honneamise - My favorite animated movie of all time.
Devil Hunter Yohko - Hilarious and cheesy!
Appleseed - No, not the crappy CGI one, but the animated 80s version.
Angelcop - More excellent cheesy anime.
Kare Kano - Probably over-shadowed by the manga.
World of Narue - A very sweet little anime from 2002 or so that I love and no one else seems to know about.
Black Jack - Both the OVA and the movie are pretty well done.

Black Jack - Both the OVA and the movie are pretty well done.

Golden Boy is one of the best comedy anime shows made, that people either get and think it is hilarious or think that it is disgusting.
Wings of Honneamise -- In my top five anime movies and Gainax first production
Devil Hunter Yohko - was a show that amused me when watching it but I don't think I would watch it again.
Appleseed -- I actually liked the 2004 non Cg movie the best of the three, but ya the 2007 CGI movie was bad. Not do to the CGI, but do to the rather uninteresting story. The OVA/Movie remake ended the story well and I really never saw a need to continue the story.
Kare Kano -- Very good but I think you are underestimating its popularity it gathered around 4 thousand fansub downloads when it came out. Of course everyone only knows it under its English name of His and Her Circumstances.
Black Jack -- All the Black Jack shows were great and it is still going strong.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes -- This is the king of all space operas spanning 162x24min OVA and three movies for a total run time of 4097min or 68.28 hours. started running 1988 and finished its run in 2001.
Armitage III - Poly Matrix -- The best of the three Armitage III shows but largely overshadowed by Ghost in the Shell.
Master Keaton -- This was just a fun series, in some ways kinda reminds me of MacGyver kinda.
