So they're remaking the first Silent Hill game for the wii and it is coming out fall 2009. I'm pretty happy. There will be several new features changes, such as Henry using a blackberry cell phone, so it might be worth it if you've even played the first game before.
Acen 2011: I lost my red kodak camera. If you found it, PLEASE contact me. I really miss it.

And it'll have waggle controls, and all the difficulty toned down so that even the most casual of player can beat it.

No thanks, I'll go buy the PS1 version again.
All systems... GO.

I dunno, I'd rather have a camera that DOESN'T control like absolute crap, and I'd rather have no combat than clumsy horrible combat, so this new Wii retelling might actually be good.

The camera could still suck, and you also assume that the Wii version won't have clumsy horrible combat. I remind you, waggle controls.

I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Way to not keep up with the news, Slowbro. Shattered Memories has NO combat whatsoever. Nada. Nein. Honestly, I couldn't stand the clunky combat in the first game, so if the game is designed to not force the player to fight at all, more power to it. If you look past the awesome story, great soundtrack, and genuinely creepy atmosphere of the original PS1 Silent Hill, it really wasn't that great of a game.

Maybe for an action game... but for an actual horror experience, I'd take Silent Hill 2 or Fatal Frame over it...

Also, Jaeger, dude, if you have a problem with the original Silent Hill's camera, never play any survival horror games. Ever. They're all like that, if not worse.

Well I just see Biohazard as a better-made series, I'll give my due respects to SH though, it wasn't bad when it came to horror.

Better-made when it comes to action? I guess.

I suppose I don't mind the direction RE decided to take with RE4. I was never a big fan of the series at all, but at least it's just an action zombie-blasting game now, instead of an action game pretending to be a horror game. (see also: the difference between how DMC1 and DMC3 were advertised) I guess I play horror games for the "horror" element... and RE just never did it for me. Relied too much on predictable "zombies jump out from around a corner and say BOO" than atmospheric, psychological terror.

Hahaha, don't you mean the REAL DMC2? (Remember, 3 was now 2) Buuut...Honestly I'm not very partial to wii shoot-em-ups...I'm still having shock reactions from the Wii's Dead Rising.

Ick. The port that shouldn't have been.

I thought the controls (aside from the unchanged horrible camera angle) in RE4 for the Wii were alright. Better than fumbling with analog sticks... (Can you tell I generally don't like console third-person shooters? Except maybe EDF2017, since half the weapons are area-effect or homing...)

DMC 3 is the real 2. :P But I still say that 2 never existed. Crazy people saying that DMC 2 exists. :\

I am iffy on this one. I might play it, but I know it won't be as good as the original.

I don't get the "if you remove everything great from the game, It's not a good game" arguement. I mean that would apply to anything.

In my opinion they made the camera angle's terrible to make the game tougher and scarier. Early in the game it let you know this when you were running down that alley with the sirens going off. It was disorienting and horrifying. They implemented this perfectly and kept you off balance almost all of the game. Which was the reason it was so tough. even skilled players without a strategy guide couldn't beat it. Hell my friend and I took 20+ hours or so the first time, we did so bad we didn't get the bad ending we just got a game over =D. We missed the friggin shotgun in the school!!!! Oh man was it tough to melee all the monsters and pistol/rifle all the bosses. But that was the beauty of the game they handed you nothing.

Taking the combat out of the game is just satisfying lazy gamer's. The controls were the exact same as resident evil and I had no problem adapting. I don't see why others couldn't.

Eh. I guess I'm actually buying into what the developers have said about "wanting to make the game like a nightmare," where you're being chased, stalked, and otherwise followed by an ominous presence, without the means to fight back. Heck, that's what I loved about the first two Oddworld games. Aside from the occasional bouts of psychically controlling an enemy or running him over with a giant wheel, it was all about running, and gave me more of an adrenaline rush than any "actual" horror games.

See also: half the stuff from Ecco 1 & 2 on Genesis. God, swimming 100mph in water-tubes suspended above the earth while trying to escape from a giant jellyfish was an incredible experience.

EDIT: I think another part of it is that with the ability to fight, I'll feel compelled to fight and kill every single enemy for completion's sake (even if it's unofficial and just for personal satisfaction) which would take away from the game's originally intended atmosphere. Plus, you know that if there's combat there will be a "broken" weapon and the challenge will be lost once you discover how to exploit it.

I see what you are saying. Keep the monsters in but have a limited ability to defend for yourself. I like that Idea. I am not pumped about modernizing it though. With garbage like blackberries and such. Also they need to keep the bosses in the game one way or another. I remember getting freaked out by the atmosphere of that huge lizard in the firey depths of the school.

Plus the hospital will be hard with so little room to dodge creatures with in those halls.

Agreed on most points Ghost. I don't think the camera being bad was intentional, though it did add some to the difficulty. Couldn't agree more on the "if you take out all the good stuff it's a bad game".

I don't know how I feel about a Silent Hill game with no combat. That was the thing that freaked me out the most:
Hearing all those creepy noises and wondering in terror WHEN it was going to jump out and attack me, and if I had
enough bullets left to take them down. Personally, I think the scary factor will be lowered considerably if you don't
have to fight the monsters, because then you'll just hear a noise or see a shadow and be like, "Well, nothing's going
to attack me, so I really don't have anything to worry about." Unless they do the whole "pop-out-at-you-but-don't-
do-anything-else-in-particular" bit. Wasn't everyone's deal with PH (besides the metal head and raping of nurses thing)
hearing him near you, dragging that fing huge knife? Weren't you afraid of what he would DO to you with that thing?

Bah, I'm ranting. But still! No combat? Am I being an idiot and missing something vital here?

I think little combat in the sense of you attacking, not so much of the enemies not attacking you.

No, you see, the enemies will attack you. You just don't have any means of fighting back. Ergo, the best idea would be to run.

As long as the new game doesn't have a bunch of retarded quicktime event Simon Says button-mash fests, I'll be happy.

They already made that game. It's called Haunting Ground. It has pretty good graphic and is nice and creepy but after the first time you get kicked to ground and hounded till you die it just becomes a frustrating mess. Being able to fight back is good unless you are running straight through an area.

The problem with setting up a survival horror game where you mainly run is that you need to explore to open new areas and such, which is annoying to try with a monster breathing down your neck at every turn, especially when you get trapped in a corner and die. I hear Clocktower implemented this well, but Haunting Ground had a lot of problems. Even Silent Hill Homecoming, which has combat, get annoying when you try to attack someone once, and they pull off 3 or 4 attacks on you and you are unable to get a hit in or defend cause you are stunned.

In theory, if you just had to run and only run it might be an ok experience. If you add exploration and puzzle solving, things just get nerve racking. You lose that feeling of suspense fan fear from running and just get frustrated.
