Lately some spammers have been invading the Insanity thread. This is very rare and now they are taking over whats left of our cherised home. Its time to fight back! Is you see some spam report it to me or akaikurama so we can take care of the situation immediately. It takes a lot to make the queen of insanity mad. This is one of them!!!!

The spammers that were on insanity forum seemed to post all on the same day. I haven't seen any since, but I'll still keep a lookout.

I recently found out that you're not supposed to reply to the spam posts, even if you really want to say something rude or funny. Or both. It just makes things worse apparently. I made this mistake recently *red faced and sheepish* So I'm going to fight spam the correct way now and just report it a lot :)

I'm somewhat impressed that they are actually personalizing profiles and signatures now, even if the names continue to remain somewhat obvious...

Would be a pretty bad idea, if they listened to me. Lots of staff and admins lurking around there. Not to mention "FREE VIAGRA! BUY 3 AND GET COMPLIMENTARY CHEAP AIRLINE TICKETS!!" is difficult to blend in with rules/policies.

OK, troops, time for a debriefing!

Based on my surveillance of the current wave of offenders, besides the usual and obvious indicators, the telltale signs of this new breed of bots are actually appearing in the profiles now:

Tiny avatar--they're actually personalizing now, but the avatar pics are tiny, and have little/nothing to do with anime. Although this is not a guaranteed sign, it is common in 8/10 of the ones I have encountered.

Interests are one or two words, and are usually things like "volleyball", or "music, dance", or "boating". Sometimes there will be a link there as well.

Check the sig! Where previous bots didn't personalize, now these guys use strategically placed links in theirs. Use your hover feature (HOVER, never click!) and check each word--sometimes they'll get crafty and make one word in the sig a link to a suspicious site, and the rest will link to a myspace or something innocent.

The location is almost always a foreign country--Brazil, Andorra, Argentina, etc.

Bad grammar--English is still their second language, so the sentence structure/spelling/usage is going to be a bit off, especially the more they talk.

That's all I can think of now, but if you have any observations, feel free to chime in!

Don't forget, some aren't so crafty and list what they're advertising as an interest. Ex; "Buying viagra" "Cheap airfair" "Refinancing mortages" etc.

Well yeah, but I'd call those a bit more obvious. It's the ones without those telltale keywords that are getting by, like the one that started the duplicate "ShamWow guy gets arrested" thread.

There was this one, username "KatherineHartnet..." that started that particular thread, that looked like a regular conversation thread; it even had two or three responses, but the signature looked something like this (hover over each individual word):

That's the format, and I just used myspace as an example.

About 97.8999% of the time, spammers list their age as 35+.
