::groan::

I know hip-hop artists are backing him, but I really hope that is nowhere near any of the campaign slogans people have created for him...

::slumps in chair::

I'm torn--they both have campaign policies I don't wholly agree with, and this whole campaign (mostly thanks to the news) has been such a circus that I can't bear to watch it most of the time.

Not really something most people would be up to discussing I imagine.

meh, I'll discuss the election with anyone who actually wants to discuss it and not just say everything my candidate does is right and everything the other candidate does is wrong..

Personally I've never liked the fact that a presidental candidate should be charasimatic. I don't care if hes likable, I care if he knows how to do his job. And I belive thats part of the reason we frequently have such bad choices because it comes down to voting for 2 pretty boys.

That being said, I've liked Obama pretty much since the start of this whole mess. I liked how open and honest he was in the very beginning and how he didn't attack his opponents personally, but instead focused on the issues. Unfortunately hes lost some of that as the race heats up, but still I'm sticking with him. Though honestly it probably won't matter as McCain has already given up on my state.

I just realized I can't vote this year, and I don't really mind. It's hard to imagine it could matter since I live in Chicago. And hard to believe that who the president is really changes much.

I also do not care if a presidental candidate is charasimatic. Electing people for political office based only upon charasima is how you get people like Hitler in power.

Charisma is nice to have. Some of our best Presidents have had it. But they've been able to back it up with substance. Washington had both, as did both Roosevelts, Kennedy, and Reagan. Heck, Clinton had it too, to be perfectly honest. (Lincoln, by contemporary accounts, didn't have charisma--he had a folksy charm that people kind of liked, but a lot more people thought buffoonish. History has proven otherwise, of course.)

McCain? He doesn't have a lot of charisma. But there is a lot of substance there. I think even his opponents should admit that, even if they disagree with him. His foriegn policy makes sense, his new economic plan makes a great deal of sense. I think he sends a strong message of unity at a time when we really need it.

Obama? He has charisma. No question. The man can give a good speech, and he does have good ideas. There were a few times in the last debate I found myself agreeing with him, especially on health care. But too often, when I listen to Obama, I ask, "That's great, Senator--but how are we going to pay for it?" We can only kick the can down the generations so long before we get into real trouble. (That's not a problem limited to Democrats, either; the Republicans have been free spenders too, including Bush, which is the main reason why they lost big in 2006.)

My biggest problem with Obama isn't that I disagree with him on a lot of issues. That's okay--I disagreed with Clinton, but people can meet halfway and compromise, which is what the US is all about. My biggest problem with Obama is that I don't know who he really is. Yep, he can make a good speech. He can undoubtedly tell me to my face, "Sentinel, I think you're a righteous dude and I will do everything in my power to make sure you can go back to college and keep going to ACen." Maybe he means it, maybe he's just pandering to me. I don't know, and that's the scary part.

All politicians do that, true. (I had a Senator from my home state lie to my face once.) But this guy is running for President. He's going to be the most powerful man on earth if elected. I want to know who he is, and if I can trust him. I feel I can trust McCain because he's got a proven record that I generally (not always) agree with.

In the interests of being fair--which is a hell of a lot more than the media has been in this election; how Palin puts up with this I'll never know--I'll step up to the plate. Most ACenners are from the Chicago area. Tell me--did Obama do some good there? Progressive pundits said he did a great job as a community organizer. Conservatives said he did nothing but become a cog in the Daley Machine. I want to know from the people who live there. How did Obama do?

Seriously. I want to know about this guy, and not what one side or the other of the media wants me to believe.

Yes. People are calling it racist, but there are arguments that most Japanese don't know about how black Americans tend to find it offensive to be compared to monkeys.

I see both sides of the argument and frankly if Obama doesn't care, neither do I.

The Japanese don't have the best track record when it comes to racism (see Nanjing, Rape of), but they're doing better. I would say this is probably more of a reference to Obama's big ears rather than his skin color. Bush got the same treatment because of his big ears too.

Besides, there would be no reason for Obama to raise a stink over it. The Japanese don't vote, and are smart enough to realize it; they just sit back and enjoy the fun. (And probably wonder why our politicians don't throw giant beer fests to get votes, like they do in Japan.)

The Europeans, on the other hand, are still under the mistaken impression that they do vote in our elections, which is why we have so many European rock stars and actors/actresses telling us to vote for Obama. (Or faux-Europeans like Madonna.) Because...uh...they hate Bush! (And every time I hear that, I really want to give them a copy of the Constitution, specifically the part about Presidents not being eligible to run more than twice.)

My invitation still stands for Chicagoans to tell me what Obama's done there. It's an honest invitation. I really want to believe that this guy, if he becomes President, is not going to spread my hard-earned "wealth" around to people who won't earn it themselves.

Oh, I'm well aware of Japan's racism and xenophobic tendencies, but on this particular count I don't find them to be guilty.

I've seen their insulting depictions of people of color (there is one in my apartment, in fact), and compared to their depictions of the "Obama monkey", it really looks more like they're giving him a "cute" look more than insulting him.

In addition to this, the people of a fishing community seems to have latched onto him because he shares the same name as their town--and they make little cookies and T-shirts that say "I :heart: Obama"... with little Obama-monkey faces on them.

I'm McCain. I think he's got more common sense and more experience than Obama. I don't hate Obama.. but really, how long has he been at this job? Not too long, and done almost nothing? He voted "present" a numerous amount of times, which means "I'm here, but that's all I'm saying" on issues, which makes me think he wanted to not have any sort of voting record for people to track so he wouldn't have a lot of dirt against him.

But whatever.

I just want McCain... but I have a bad feeling it will be Obama....

the most rascist thing I can think of from japan (please don't hurt me, this is an example)

well I know the japanese have very very strict laws upon the koreans whom live in Japan, which they veiw as a kind of rascism. I got a book on it somewhere.

You're too nice. Though I suppose the "cute kitten" defense would work too. Ahmadinejad and Putin would look at you and go "awww..." Then you could scratch their eyes out! :ph34r:

From what I understand, things have gotten better for Koreans living in Japan, but there's still room for improvement. At least Japan's acknowledging the problem, which is something they didn't do for a very long time.

The biggest reason why I don't want McCain in ofice though is because he looks sickly and weak and I don't think the country will be able to cope if the president would be unable to act because his health conditions get bad... and I'm even more afraid if Palin succeeds him if something like that should happen....

I'm sorry ahead of time--I really don't want to turn this into a "oh yeah--well my candidate is..." Still, I gotta say something about what Varun said about Old Man McCain:

What about FDR? He was in a wheelchair when he was elected. True, he did die in office, but he had been in office for 12 years when he did and had basically worked himself to death to win WWII. Woodrow Wilson had a stroke during his second term, as did Eisenhower--the country survived having Nixon in charge during the latter; during the former, Wilson's wife was practically running the country (and not doing terribly bad!).

I'd mention Kennedy too, but it was kept quiet just how sick JFK was. Besides having a bad back, he suffered from Addison's Disease and a bunch of other problems, and nearly died only a few years before he was elected. That makes JFK all the more impressive IMHO, because he did all that and came across as being youthful and vigorous when he was actually terribly sick. (Also says something about the media back then that they were willing to cover for the President--today's media would be on that like a hooker on a Corvette.)

Come to think of it, who was the last really physically fit President we've had? Dubya keeps himself in pretty good shape (though he's a bit of a klutz and keeps falling off his bike), but Clinton was starting to get a bit hefty there. I'd say the most physically fit President we've ever had was probably Teddy Roosevelt.

Didn't mean to get carried away with Presidential trivia, but I can't help myself.
