With the ACen dates being so early this year I can't go. Don't most college students have exams/commencement that week? It will be the first Acen I haven't gone to since I started going a few years ago. so sad

You're not alone, McWeen. Purdue University has exams around the same time as Anime Central, too.

You may want to see if your professors teach more than one section of the particular class your in that has it's exams on Thursday/Friday and see if you can sit in with the other classes as they take their exams. A lot of professors at my alma matter would do this for students who couldn't make the exam time for their section for whatever reason.
It's worth an ask, anyhow!

I know what you mean! I got really lucky this year. Our exams finish the Wednesday right before Acen. So I'll get home that day, have Thursday and then drive up to Acen for Friday (which is only 40 minutes, luckily). I'm really sorry you can't make it. I agree about asking your teachers to sit with another class, hope everything works out!

I think that Northern Illinois's finals are the week after ACEN; if that's the case, then I won't be making it (first time in 5 years).

I would just tell teachers that I had a trip planned before I knew the dates of finals, and if I could take the exam early. Most instructors will oblige, or at least they will from my experience.

What she said. When I was in college, taking finals early was never a problem. It's taking a test late that gets complicated; but doing things ahead of time by discussing early on with your professors what you've planned (you don't have to tell them the specifics of the trip) is always an option. You will find most of your professors won't give two straws about you sitting in on an earlier session or taking your final in his/her office ahead of time.

Trust me: you don't have to miss ACen because of college if you plan ahead appropriately.

If you're at Purdue, it should be at the very end of your exams and chances are you'll be done by friday anyway.

I attend Western Illinois and ACen is the weekend before my exams, but I plan on keeping up on my studies enough during the semester that I can still attend. That, and cross my fingers that I can opt out of taking some finals like I have the past few semesters!

Columbia's are the week after ACEN this year. I usually plan my classes around having Thursday's and Friday's off, so I'm not worried about school interfering with the con. I know that the con is coming too, so I'll work extra hard to make sure all my projects and studying are done. I actually like having ACEN before my exams because it's great to step away from school for a few days and have some fun. It helps clear my head.

you think this is early- does anyone remember the year they held Acen in April?
It was my last year of college so it was 2002- and we still had classes going on that week. I was house managing for a show and could not make it.

But just think how many did not make it that year. Thats why we try and keep the con in May- it works better for more people.

And as someone else said college does not last forever- you will be done one day- and hopefully Acen will be there too.

Oh my god it's ACEN 2008 all over again when I had to cram 20 credit hours on three days to go to a con ><

Although I remember they had an early date but then changed it to a week afterwards...maybe...just maybe they'll change the date because I seriously do not enjoy staying at school for 11 hours DX

Maybe this is because I'm in a community college that this option is possiable but here it goes none the less. What I do is I get with my teachers and tell them that I have a family event (cause lets face it that is what this is) that I have been working on since ::Insert your start of plan date here:: and is there any way that I can take the final early or something along thoughs lines?

Most of them have been really cool so far and worked with me on it. Yes I have to do a bit more work in the coming week before the final but it is so worth it for the relaxing fun you have at Acen

Unfortunately, it's basically a fact that no matter what weekend it's on, it's going to be inconvenient for someone. There really is no universal date that is going to be okay with every single possible attendee. Not to mention the fact that we're not the only group that uses the hotel and convention center.

And like everyone else has said, most teachers will be cool about letting you arrange to take a final early. Just don't put that off until the last minute so it's not a nasty surprise.

Definitely go up to your profs at the beginning of spring semester to let them know, AND ALSO give them a reminder a few weeks to a month beforehand! I know one of mine specifically asked me to do this - you can't expect them to remember each of their students' schedules, obviously. He wanted to make sure he had the exam prepared in time, since I had to sit it with a different course entirely, not just a different section of my class, and he was writing up new exams for each class ^^;; Would've been pretty bad if he procrastinated on my class's exam (don't we all?) and didn't have it for me when I showed up to take it...

oho finals at acen. That would be an epic fail for me.

But yup acen falls on the last day of finals for me but unfortunately i won't know if i have finals on thursday or friday until the middle of the semester. Still, i plan to inform my professors i have a trip planned just in case i need to take a few finals early. Ugh early finals...eww.

Actually, I like having it a week early. Last year I had my last final on Thurs. so I had to move out that day too. My parents had to come help me the weekend before and take what I didn't need for the last week, but we were still stuck w/ 2 boys crammed in the back of my g/f's station wagon (these are a godsend for Acen) with all my bedding that I had to have to sleep on, plus all the other stuff I NEEDED for a week in the very back. Not to mention we lived w/o a TV, fridge, and microwave that week and I had all my costume-making stuff there b/c I was rushing to finish. The room had to be cleaned, rearranged, and stripped before we left, so that was awful.

Yes, it sucks to have to go to school just before Acen, but mind you, you could have to do worse. I've rearranged tests before; most college profs are NOT ogres that will eat your flesh and grind your bones for asking. I say most b/c I've had some pretty crabby teachers.

I sadly don't get the choice of asking my professors if I can take the finals earlier. Sensei already said that you ARE to take it on THAT day and no other ~_~ So I could have the choice of taking it early Thurs or late Thurs. Not only that my last final's from 5-7 Thursday night. All I can think of is that it will make the hotel stay one night cheaper. But thankfully I have one more year left until I'm done *crosses fingers*

One thing that can be done, at least for next year, is in the suggestions area politely ask that it be held during the 2nd or 3rd weekend of May. I did that for I think it was ACen '07 and I received a reply saying that a lot of others had asked the same thing so they did change the dates. So its just a thought but maybe it will help out for next year and collee won't be such a pain when finals roll around.

I have finals the week of ACen. I have two tests and two papers so I'm not worried. I have a test on the 4th (noon) and one on the 7th (noon), but I'm gonna see if I can take the one on the 7th earlier. My mom's dropping me off at ACen after my final is over so I don't have to worry about unpacking and taking my stuff to my house. :3 I loves my mom! <3

I don't know about other college kids, but I get out May 1st. The week right before acen are my finals, but teachers hate staying past wednesday, so I'll be all done up here Thursday and heading to chicago Friday morning.

Finals for me have always been Mon-Wed. Thur-Fri I always had off, I love it.
