Started with Gundam, Tenchi, Sailor Moon, Speed Racer, Dragon Ball Z and like 2 episodes of Samurai Pizza Cats. Mostly the anime that was being shown on Fox, Cartoon Network, and some of the obscure channels. This was back when I was in the 5th grade, and had no idea that what I was watching was anime. I started seriously watching anime about 3 years ago (Like actually going out to buy them, read up on any new ones/check out some of the older must watch anime)

I started watching anime when I was about 11 (I'm now 21) And among my first were DBZ, Cardcaptors, Pokemon, Dragonball, and Digimon. A bit later was Yu Yu hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Ruroni Kenshin, Inuyasha and some others.

Cardcaptors, Digimon, and Yu Yu Hakusho were the series that really got me obsessed ^__^

Cardcaptors was also an excellent lesson in how Western TV executives can really butcher up a series. Cut out all the "romance," all the non-PC stuff (hey! her brother is GAY! Her father married one of his STUDENTS!), show it out of sequence, just go for the "action" scenes and skip the rest...

The good news was I got me to buy the non-edited versions so I could actually enjoy the whole story... CLAMP does some pretty good stuff.

I think Speed Racer was one of the first true "from anime" shows I watched.

Same here, cost me $100 to get it all and I am still looking for the first movie in stores near me. Second movie was good.

Clamp does excellent work, CardCaptor Sakura being my favorite magical girl anime ever. Magic Knight Rayearth was a close second though. I like how they are willing to touch on taboo subjects, especially considering the time period when they put it into their anime and manga which was before current animes started to do it a bit more often.

My first anime? I'd have to say a toss-up between Speed Racer, Sailor Moon, and Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro), simply because I was watching all three around the same time, and I can't remember which one I'd seen first...though I'd assume Totoro since my mum bought the VHS for me & my little sister. It would've been about late 1994/95 (age 4/5), since my sister's ~3 years younger than me and she was still a crawly runt when I first remember us watching Totoro together....and her kicking my arse to the original Power Rangers around that same time, lol.

I didn't know it as anime back then, just "those Japanese cartoons" that they ran on Cartoon Network. Then came the days of Pokemon, oh gods, Pokemon. Obsessively waking up an hour before school to watch the show & record it religiously, begging my mum into buying me a GBC and Yellow for Christmas, blowing all my allowance on the cards and decks, dressing like Ash Ketchum on more than just Halloween.....then discovering Japan made/had the awesomer-looking cards & video games (Pikachu Genki Deshou! anyone?) and promptly wanting to learn Japanese just to get and understand them. Pokenerd extraordinaire, you could call me. XD

After that came the original Digimon, Card Captor Sakura (they kirred it ;-; ), a mecha series I can't recall the title of, and Hamtaro before I learned it was called anime. The first "adventure" after this discovery was a rather painful foray into Inuyasha-obsession (oh the stupidity of age 14!). Fortunately after that, I moved on to wiser choices. Namely being such gems as Ayashi no Ceres (Ceres, Celestial Legend), Fruits Basket (though the manga-anime split always bothered me), DeathNote, and Vampire Knight. Most recently I've been working on Trinity Blood (3/4 done) & Lucky Star (read series but only watched little).

Now, if I could just get my hands on the Pokemon Indigo League/Orange Islands seasons, and a copy of the RahXephon box set, I could die very happy. X3

That's an interesting subquestion to pose: what was your first VHS/DVD anime that you purchased?
Mine would be a VHS of Dragon Ball - Red Ribbon Army West City Chase. I bought it at Suncoast back in 2003.

Well, unless you count Pokemon (which I won't), then it was be the first volume of Ai Yori Aoshi about 4 years ago. Since then I've added a couple hundred DVDs. XD

Technically, my first anime series was Voltron (which I only recently learned began as Golion and Dairugger XV). The other animated series I grew up with were originally in English. But I fell out of animation fandom around junior high, and only gave it a second chance when a friend lent me a videotape of Slayers TV, dubbed edition.

If you haven't read Scott McCloud's 1993 book Understanding Comics, then do so. In the first few pages, the author talks about his experiences: and discusses why he assumed comics were brainless junk growing up. It has some parallels to how I became an anime fan.

View Postskyrune83, on Jun 15 2009, 04:04 PM, said:

BTW, was Ranma 1/2 ever on TV in the US? It seems like many people have said this was one of their firsts.

No, but among the crazy cult of VHS fanboys in the late 1990s, the Ranma series was rather popular. There was a really strict divide between VHS devotees and the people who only watched televised anime series. An independent rental store in my area had plenty of Ranma videotapes. (That store is long gone.) And so that TV series was among the first two shows I watched.

The economics of being a fan circa 1998-2000: the first season of Ranma VHS was $30 per two dubbed episodes, and later seasons were $25 per two dubbed episodes. Subtitled VHS for that series cost $5 more.

I'm sure I watched anime when I was a kid, but my childhood is a blur, so that doesn't count. ^_^

2001 - 2005 for me. Gundam Wing and Tenchi Muyo specifically.

My first anime was Voltron way back as a kid. I still have the second voltron team set. It's missing the hands and the jet (as expected it's seen better days :D ) Wishing I had the lions as well.

However it wasn't till college that I saw Tenchi Muyo, Dragon ball Z, and BIG O on CN that I really got into it.

I watched Toonami as a kid and everything, but other than Cowboy Bebop, I didn't care about anime much at all throughout high school. Second semester of college, though (Jan 2009), is when I fell down the spiral of weeabism >.<

My first extreme fandom was/is still Cowboy Bebop. My first email is spikespiegelismyman (Yeah...I was in my pre-teens when this was created lmfao) and my current non business email is fayevalentineqoh and I collect everything Bebop and its the only series I do this for. I even have both the manga's and the complete soundtrack (thats right...EVERY cd...theres a crap load). Also with this fandom when I turn 21 I will be buying the handgun that Faye uses and my fiance is buying Spikes. I've seen tons of series and still nothing beats Bebop to me. (Heck I even made like 5 AMV's to CB as well. =3) I have a great love for other series but I dont know what it is that makes bebop so special to me. :P

Trigun was a great series too and I read the manga after I saw the series and I prefer the manga now lol
