They usually start new threads.
Well, there's the obvious porn/cell phone/iPod/ringtone/video game console spam, but that's been pretty scarce lately.
Then there's the newer kinds that start a thread that appears totally innocent, but has a link that leads to a (usually Chinese-based) website that sells stuff. The problem is, the majority of this stuff is bootleg merch, porn, or the site is a scammer site. The most recent example was a thread started with the bot asking how many different Pokemon there were and linked to a China-based website that sold bootleg Pokemon toys (and OMG people may have bought toys from that site!
). It looked totally innocent and tricked a lot of people!
The newest breed, however, is even trickier. They start an innocent-looking thread or post with no link except the one in their sig (or sometimes even a fake sig!). The trick to that is--the link leads to the same type of sites as the spammers use above!
So far, the giveaways are
*the link goes to a site that has something for sale (or a place where you have to put in username/password or other sensitive info) WARNING--DO NOT BUY THINGS FROM THESE SITES!
They can steal your credit card info. There are ways to check if the site is legitimate before you put in that information.
*Just signed up on the forums today (or yesterday)
*Short, simple messages (or long, repetitive ones)
*No personal info in the profile (most forum members who are here to socialize at least put in their birthday, location, etc)
*fake line breaker for sig
