Hello,

My friend and I are planning on cosplaying as Kosmos and T-elos from Xenosaga. But we have no idea on how to make the armor.
So were asking our fellow cosplayers for armor creation help. We're trying to find the most light weight material possible because we don't want any wardrobe malfunction. So, thank you! We appreciate any comments that will help.

~flies in with cape~
ill save you

~reads post~
sooo
how much cosplay experience do you have
this one will not be easy

~rubs chin~
well
once again
i must say pcv or acrylic
~fanboys over my new acrylic collars~

guns are mainly pvc pipe with pvc sheeting
not wonderflex
~shakes fist at wonderflex~
the body armor can be done in pvc fabric stretched over a base, pvc sheeting, acrylic sheeting

~shakes fist~
on one had better mention fiberglass or poly carbonate
it is of lesser finish
heavier
more expensive (well not for small work)
and is more difficult to work with

this project is a high level work
oh and theres this
good luck

good times to all

I <3 Knives. I was wondering what to do for the armor I need to make for my 2010 cosplays.

Anybody know how to make a clear faceshield? I thinking of doing a Moldiver cosplay.

Foamies (craft foam) is probably the easiest and cheapest material to work with to make armor out of. You can heat shape it too. Another good choice is Wonderflex, but you need to heat it up either with boiling water or a heat gun. You'll also want to get something to form the pieces over so you get uniform pieces.
I have zombies and I'm not afraid to use them!!

Open for wig commissions.

Thanks. Hopefully between that & the links from simonsaz3 I should be able to manage all mine.

2010 plans are: Kazuma from Scryed, Ronin Warriors (not sure who yet), Moldiver, plus I want to attempt KosMos eventually. I also might need to make a Zero helmet for this year.

Major thanks to both of you.

They may be called acrylic sheets but I don't know....but there's clear plastic vinyl (PVC) that JoAnn's sells....(it's the kind of stuff that is used to make some shower curtains) You'd just have to get the thicker stuff and stretch it over the area you need so it doesn't wrinkle and such.

Actually the acrylic sheets look like they'll work fine for the Zero mask, but I don't know how exactly to shape it yet. I already managed to find somewhere online that sell some for reasonable price. I just have to remember to order gray not black cause you can't see thru the black.

I found them for about $7 for a 1ft by 1ft sheet, which is all I'll need. Course I still need to check the shipping.

*Edit* $4.79 for shipping

I remember a girl who used those colored plastic file folder thingies glued over plexiglass (polycarbonate is better though) for a visor. I used the same method and got some good results but I dont know how well it would work for something of that size. Oh, and the sheets were heat formed.
I have zombies and I'm not afraid to use them!!

Thats not bad at all.
As for cutting I suggest using a jigsaw

Old thread that will most likely help you out.

That does help with how to mold it. I can use the back of a wig head to get the curve right. Now I just gotta get the shape down. I figure it'll be oval-ish. Here is a pic of Zero's helmet.

I'm no good at cutting shapes when they have to be curved as well. I'll get one of those folders to use as a test before I do anything permenant.

That really looks like a job for resin-shell armor (the look and finish of resin without the weight of cast resin), but it is definitely a high-level task.

You'd need positive or negative molds for uniformity, fiberglass cloth, a lot of resin and catalyst, some really good dust masks (the kind for really fine particles), and a LOT (I mean an unbelievable amount) of sandpaper/sanding sponges and patience, because you will be sanding for what will seem like the rest of your life.

Of course, what our good friends have listed above is a wealth of info in itself.

RUGHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
~points at T_C~
you know that acrylic and pvc sheeting is ten times easier to use than fiberglass and resins
~cough~
acrylic is expensive
<<
>>
but if you buy scraps
witch in most cases is all you need
its not bad

some one mentioned Wonderflex
~rampages~

yes fiberglass, Wonderflex, and resins are good for high detail and organic looking peaces
i will admit
but for armors with a sheen you have to spend a week just sanding to make it look respectable

with sheeting
its cut, heat, glue, and a small amount of sanding
they come in any color and texture you want
so no painting
1/8 in pvc sheets should be the same price for all colors (or well there riping ya)

~more nonsenical ranting~
good times to all

He's right, you know ;). I just wanted to raise his hackles a bit

Lightweight rigid PVC would be the cheapest, sturdiest, and least toxic option aside from foam. WAY easier than resin, and cheaper and easier to deal with than Wonderflex.

Even if you can't find the color of plastic you want, with Krylon or Rust-Oleum spray-paint (both brands make spray-paints that are formulated for plastics, plus a primer that makes any spray-paint suitable for plastic) you can get around that.

With the proper adhesives and tools (a Dremel, some screws and sandpaper/sanding sponges, a hot knife, a heat gun, and probably a hacksaw), you can make almost any organic shape you please.

Actually I figured how I'm gonna do the face shield with help from my cousin. Any chance you have a tutorial for making plushies? That's something I'm really gonna need. I've got to make atleast 5 for ACen.

Depends on what kind of plushie you're making. Here's one (if you scroll down to the description, you can see it has parts to the tutorial)...
