Everyone should come! This was a pretty big meetup last year.

The only catch is, since it is a Japanese cultural festival, we ask that cosplay be kept below the ostentatious level.

If you have a yukata, kimono, haori, happi coat, or any other traditional Japanese or other Asian clothing (or a cosplay that looks close enough to these things), by all means wear them--heck, show 'em off! I'm wearing my new yukata this year, and I have an extra if someone wants to borrow it while we're there. Also, cosplays that lean more towards everyday clothing or, you know... just wearing everyday clothing are OK.

However, we do not want to draw attention to ourselves and away from the festival by wearing overly flamboyant cosplays. It would be disrespectful towards the festival.

...and I shouldn't have to say this, but NO WEAPONS!!

Kitty ears are OK though.

I've yet to go to this, it sounds like fun!

Since it's in a while and after summer school is done I should be freed up... though I have no idea where Mitsuwa is. xD
I'll have to look into that and talk to my parents [being a minor sucks]
And maybe I can bring a few friends with me this time....

Though I have nothing traditional to wear! T_T

You don't have to dress traditional, but it is fun when you do. Last year I learned two important lessons: one, Japanese women wear a LOT of layers around their waist, and two, you canNOT cross Algonquin road taking tiny kimono-steps!

I agree with the cosplay and weapons rule. I like to respect the festival and the Japanese culture. I don't want to treat them like it's a con. I gonna see if I can make a Kimono, if I can't then that's fine. Go as myself!

Sorry folks--keep the paddles at home this go. Although I love a good paddling myself, a Japanese cultural festival is not the place for it. (:o and OMG someone bashed another person over the head with a daikon?!? WTF guise!??)

Oh god yes, I remember the flamewar... =_=

Well, I saw some outside our group that were dressed J-rock and EGL. They are both considered more J-fashion than cosplay, so although still out of place, it is still not technically considered a costume, and although it is not traditional it is still Japanese culture.

So if you want to dress jrock or lolita, just don't get crazy and keep it relegated to the clothes--leave the brightly-colored wig at home. It is possible to dress jrock/loli and not be ostentatious, so use a little good sense in this matter.

I can help you with that, I've made a couple now between my Rukia costume and the pretty blue kimono I made myself.

Have to see how my schedule is but barring stuff coming up I should be there, I'll probably wear my ankle length blue kimono I made myself. :) I missed the Bon Odori fest last year so I hope I can make it this year!

If you do make one, use a nice cotton print and try for a yukata (the summer kimono). Soooo comfy... you can't beat cotton in the summertime!

I get mine at an awesome price from kitticorner on eBay, but not everyone likes to shop online. Lynn sells kimono and yukata at the best prices I've seen in one place online:

$30-45 each for a yukata, as opposed to $40-70
$15 each for untied obi, $25 for pre-tied

...and in addition to really cute kimonos, she sells the koshi himo (to tie the folds of the yukata in place), and the hadajuban (kimono slip) and other things for wearing a kimono/yukata correctly, although you can wear a v-neck t-shirt and use cotton twill tape and get the same effect. She also ships quickly--if you order before the weekend is over you should have your yukata in time for the Bon Odori.

They also sell kimono and yukata there at the festival, but they are expensive. I'm not sure where else to buy one at a brick and mortar store... well, in this state, anyway...

I'll just wear my work shirt for the event.... Which is pretty much me in jeans, red/white chuck taylor's shoes, and something Toyota related shirt... -.- I wonder if I'll offend anyone wearing that....

BTW.... I'll probably be coming from work that day... that's why I said I'll wear my work clothes for the event..
