You don't have to dress traditional, but it is fun when you do. Last year I learned two important lessons: one, Japanese women wear a LOT of layers around their waist, and two, you canNOT cross Algonquin road taking tiny kimono-steps!
I know... but I'd still like too...
Maybe I can nag my friend who actually has making stuff abilities to make me one by then...
Or: Where would I get a yukata? [more comfy]

Well, I saw some outside our group that were dressed J-rock and EGL. They are both considered more J-fashion than cosplay, so although still out of place, it is still not technically considered a costume, and although it is not traditional it is still Japanese culture.
So if you want to dress jrock or lolita, just don't get crazy and keep it relegated to the clothes--leave the brightly-colored wig at home. It is possible to dress jrock/loli and not be ostentatious, so use a little good sense in this matter.
A slightly punk-ish regular outfit will be my back up if I can't get lovely traditional stuff or a normal-ish cosplay in time...
