Alright! Since this is a cosplay forum, we need this. Lets all give our Cosplay advice!

I Shall start!

1. DO try to get the same hairstyle. Not many people may understand a pink haired Itachi.
2. DON'T cosplay someone you don't want to ^.^
~2010! -Sigh- Indeed I do need to get working.

3. The QUALITY of your cosplay doesn't matter quite so much as making sure YOU ENJOY the costume/character you choose.

This year, I had loads of fun in my last-minute $10 "Race for the Cure" zombie costume - way more than my (comparatively) expensive and hard-to-make white mage costume. o_o

And last year at Anime Iowa, my favorite costumes my friend and I did were soda-box Gundams, which we were actually assembling the day of the convention in our hotel room. xD

^^ points above
the 'Things I learned about cosplay' thread is a REALLY good place to go. I lived there before A-cen 2008 which was my first.
It rocks.

*laughs* That first one's mine, and yet I completely forgot about starting it!

But yeah, to condense that thread into one or two helpful sentences, don't get complacent and not bring any last-minute tools because you think you "made it perfectly". At anime conventions, especially large ones such as ACen, anything CAN and WILL happen. Still, check out the thread to get an idea of what to bring. Some things are universal, some will depend on which cosplays you bring.

LoL, good point! And I know what you were going through. My husband's Shishio cosplay was all wraps and well, let's just say I'm glad I grabbed extra cloth because I was able to cut more strips out of it to patch up his bandages.

Size really shouldn't matter cosplay is for enjoyment. I mean I did cosplay to have fun, I didn't care if others wouldn't like it. And people that would come up and ask for pictures or ask to hug me, that was just a bonus. So I say if you like to cosplay go right ahead. What I think is the key MUST for cosplaying is you must put time and effort in your costume and at the same time be proud of your final product. :)

Well said... time, effort, and the passion for your character should really be key. I mean, you'd never cosplay a character you have no connection with, right?

I was surprised that someone I met at the Bleach photoshoot didn't know what squad she was in...O.o.
I figure never do that.
But if you see a character you'd like to do - RESEARCH THEM!
I was going to be the LT to the lazy guy in Bleach since I wouldn't have to get a wig...but when I couldnt remember either of their names....I chose against it.

Haha, yes. It'd be so goofy to miss out the whole research bit of your character though. I mean, how can you look up pictures and not learn a thing or two about him/her and the game/anime he/she is from. As for the person who didn't know about the squad, I'd probably just lol at anyone who'd tell me they didn't know what they were cosplaying from.

I tried not to...It was sad though because she missed the chance to be in the shot and then they left and they had another chance for her to be in a picture bu since she was already gone...nothing... -sigh-

Yeah I know what you mean. I've heard stories of people (and been there myself) who missed out photoshoots because they had no idea people discuss them here on the forums and pre-decide the location and time.

Well, it was definitely a start publicizing the forum cosplay gathering lists into the booklet/flyers they give out, but probably not enough congoers knew about or read them, especially the first-timers.

DO NOT cosplay/crossplay a character you know nothing about just because someone told you to it. That will end badly. ...Some otaku may come rushing up to, spouting the anime or manga's inside jokes or questions about said character and you'll be like "Uhh, duh?" Just don't do it. I've known people who've done that very same thing.

Okay, so I read DramaCon. Best OEL ever. ;D

In the third book when Christie finally brings her own cosplay, everyone is making negative comments about the satin she used and Matt says, "If you have to ask, you'll never know."

So, with Acen 09 being my first con EVER, and doing a full weekend of cosplay (not that many home-made, one being an actual outfit and not costume), I have to ask before I decide to actually MAKE anything of my own.

What IS so wrong with satin when it comes to cosplay?

Just because it is a costume, doesn't mean it has to be made of satin. This also goes for dresses.

The materials that can go into cosplay are as diverse as the materials that can go into everyday clothing.

First off, satin is not very photo-friendly, especially if you're using the cheap stuff, especially if you don't construct the garment perfectly. The camera flash will reveal every flaw, and you will likely hate nearly every photo taken of you.

You want to think about how the fabric moves and the actual garment you are making, amongst other things. You wouldn't make battle attire from the same material you'd use for a prom dress, right? These are the types of things you'd want to consider before you head to the aisle of shiny fabrics.

Cotton, denim and thicker fabrics move differently from satin, and there are many fabrics that are not only cheaper to buy, but easier to sew with, especially for beginners (they don't fray, they don't slide around as much, etc...).

Good tip here also, DO NOT use PVC leather for tight-fitting garments, they DO stick to your skin very hard and WILL give you a rash after a bit of walking around in them. This tip was passed from a friend who is actually a comissioner that I've known for quite a few years. (Friend of mine.)

There are ways around that though.

One is lining fabric. While you are sewing, you want to match each piece you cut out with a piece of absorbent lining fabric (like the kind used in swimsuits).

The other would be to powder a LOT before getting into the suit. Not only does if buffer the sweatiness, but it makes the skintight outfit easier to put on and take off.

Okay. I can see the reasoning in that. I had been thinking maybe because cheap satin can fray if you're not careful...

I've been there. Not with cosplay, but with like, Halloween and school musicals and whatnot. And Daddy-Daughter dances. My mom made a lot of my dresses out of satin when I was little. >.< The seams give a rash if they're not lined.

Wow, I can't believe I remember all of that.... woohoo, common sense >_<

And that makes sense too. Or if you make it a half-inch larger and wear leggings, Under Armour, etc.

Of course, having no prior experience in cosplay but in costuming in general, I'm not very helpful, but I see responding to things that are being said as educational to my sake.

And I'm not sure if anyone's said this already, but it's something I've learned from the uniform moms in marching band. If there are small parts (buttons, little doodads like rosettes and what-have-you,) bring extras and lots of them. Being in a competitive marching band with decade-old uniforms, things could and did come off during warm-up.

So that's a bit I CAN share.

I'd like to bring up another important aspect of cosplaying: "Taking Pictures" ^_^

If you really like another otaku's cosplay outfit, compliment them! ^_^ Then, by all means, ask for a picture. I've talked to other cosplayers who think it's rather annoying and creepy when a fellow otaku just says "Can I have your pic?" and that's it. Kinda stalker-ish... It's as if the picture-taker is on some weird scavanger hunt. Likewise, if someone asks you for a pic, you do still have the right to say no. My friend was "no face" last year from "Spirited Away" and handed out gold pieces to people at random times, but it got to be rather exhausting for him after awhile, because so many people were stopping us for pictures when we had to get to a panel or other event. He had to say no to half the people for this reason, so do not be offended if someone refuses to have their picture taken.

Otherwise, be sure to give out plenty of compliments and ask lots of questions about how someone made their outfits, or where they bought a prop. It not only informs you, and possibly helps out with your own unique ideas, but makes other cosplayers feel really proud about their work. Cosplaying is like an artform, and many people put quite a bit of hard work, time and money into their clothing, hair and props.

Unite, unite! ^_^

Do not come to ACEN and buy a random cape and/or headband, and then claim to be cosplaying. Not only is it half-assed, but kinda insults the hours others put into their costumes. I understand if you forgot an accessory at home, but to rely completely on what's on sale at ACEN....**shakes head angrily**
