You guys have been requesting it and this year we are giving it to you.

This year ACen will have it's first Hallway Costume contest. My name is Jessie and I will be running it. So if you have any questions or concerns, please direct them here or send me a PM.

Location:
The Hallway is currently being moved, as soon as I know where it's going to be, I will make sure it's post here.
Times:
Friday 3-7 and Saturday 11-3


Rules:
-Costume must be made by the person participating or the person who made it is present to speak with the judges.
-Participants MUST bring photo reference of the character they are portraying.
-NO original designs. Must be anime, manga, video game related, Japanese related or in limited quantities, Korean related.
-Entry line will be cut off no later than the times given. No exceptions.
-Costumes MUST be compliant with the IRT hallway cosplay rules. (A.K.A. 4'/6" rules) (NO EXCEPTIONS) If your costume breaks this rule, please enter it in the masquerade.

Awards:
Three Judges awards
Best Hallway (Individual)
Best Hallway (Group)
Best Character Likeness

The winners will be announced during the Masquerade. This is also when they will be given their awards.

OK, so is the Hallway contest separate from the Masq (meaning, if you're in a walk-on/skit for the Masq, can you still have an entry in the Hall contest)?

Does The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess count as an acceptable video game? Also, can you enter more than one costume if you wear a different one each day?

No. It has to be Japanese related.

as for the "costume must be made by wearer" bit, can you define the term "made," please? Would it be something like "handsewn" and "no other piece like it on earth" or "comprised of items that have been purchased, but put together in an original manner, etc..."
if I can enter, this would be my first contest entry, so I'm still a little confused/intimidated by the grand scope of it all

Yah im wondering too I worked my butt off making my massive prop for A.B.A from guilty gear but my cousin airbrushed it for me and i bought shorts for it so does that mean i cant enter? If thats the case its fine I can enter my miwako costume since I made that whole thing myself. But I would have a much better chance winning with A.B.A lol. This will be in the schedule thing we get with our badges right?

I'm pretty sure the handcrafted requirement is going to be a percentage in the majority (like 60% or more), as it is in the craftsmanship portion of the Masquerade.

For the costume I'm entering I made everything except the mittens and the tights.

What if it is a manga that is not written by a Japanese person? It's licensed by Tokyopop, but the author is DEFINITELY not from Japan.

Yeah I'm curious as well on the made by the person part. I've never been in any cons masquerade or hall cosplay contest so I'm really oblivious. I just wanted to know what the rule is on modified pieces? I took a preexisting coat and modified it as well as made a dress into a skirt, plus I mean I bought gloves rather than sew them but I styled everything myself and made the prop from scratch. Technically I made the end result but really I didn't start from scratch like most people probably do on a lot of pieces since they were more basic things you could just buy.

I figured I'd ask in advance since if I couldn't do altered stuff I'll just have to bring one of my older outfits I did in full. =D

Yea they need to clarify on that, Does it have to 100% from scratch or do can you modify normal cloths.

Here's the thing, the awards are, Best Individual, Best Group, Best Character Likeness, and three judges awards. I didn't do prop because unlike the Masquerade, we cannot bend the 4 foot by 6 inch rule. If you break this rule, we have to disqualify you. I'm sorry. BUT, you could still win a judges award.

As for making your own costume as opposed to modified, as long as it's not purchased from a seller, you can enter it if it has been modified. But you also have to remember that people who have made their costumes 100% are also competing. And this is by no means trying to discourage you. I won Best of Show at ACen 2004 with Edward from Cowboy Bebop. So you could try to aim for the Best Character Likeness, which has personally always been my favorite award.

This is a first year event and I want everyone to enjoy it. If anything, it could be practice for those of you who are too intimidated to compete in the masquerade. My prop doesnt break the rule as far as I know because it breaks down into a 4ft and 2ft section ^^

This sounds highly entertaining! ^^ It will be a good way for me to see if my Dark costume is accurate enough. Are slight alterations to the character's outfit permitted, such as adding in chains or playing off of something that happens in the show? For example, if a cosplayer shows up as a dead L with wings and a halo, would that be considered acceptable?

I'm undecided at this point on entering or not, but I'll make up my mind soon. I do have two questions:

1) Do we need to register for this contest or have some form filled out before being judged?
2) Is it possible to break this event into 3 levels of cosplay-making experience (novice/beginner, intermediate/journeyman, master)? It would be unfair to have budding cosplayers to go up against someone who has won several cosplay awards or years of costume-making.

As long as it doesn't deviate too far from the original design, it's fine! That sounds acceptable to me.

1) You register when you enter the room. There is a form for you to fill out. It's really short.
2) Hallway contest aren't usually that complicated, and it is a first year event. So this year it will not be broken into that many categories. Depending on how it goes this year is depending on how it is handled next year. Please don't worry!

I don't recall having seen this asked/answered, are costumes that have won an award at another convention eligible to enter? Also, would the eligibility of said costume be affected by any circumstances, Ex. type of award(s) won, convention size, region competed in (different part of country = different pool of competitors/judges)?

I'd say if you won a judges award or something of that nature it is okay. But if you won a best of show or place award (1st, 2nd...etc) then no.
