Anime/manga Swap Meet.

Any chance on one of the days, there could be a Anime/Manga Swap meet in one of the smaller convention rooms.
Something along the lines of everyone could bring in Anime/Manga that we don't watch anymore or have doubles of for some that they might want to try or finish off.
Scenerio #1: Everything is put on a table at the front of room for everyone to see in organized groups of each person. So everything's condition can be seen out in open and people can work out trades.
Scenerio #2: A little while before the meet starts everything is collected and catagorized by type ( I.E. Manga, Anime, VHS,ETC,) and put on table in room. Each person is given an amount of coupons/token pretaining to each item they brought in to be used to select other items. Kinda of like what uses to be done at an Elementary School open house. -The only flaws I can see in this plan is what to do with any left over items, who ever was in charge putting out all the items, or if a person can't find anything they like.-
Scenerio #3: Use the above thread as a system to post what different people have up for trade and have a convention room where the trades can be made. Along with what Scenerio #1 is.
The main flaw in any case would be in some cases having room to bring said items to Convention.
I've been to a few convention where something like this was tried and it worked out pretty well.

I myself have several DVD's I want to part with. Fans would have fun meeting with each other, trading/bartering/interacting over the things they love.
I read your other post and I think you're right about the trust thing. If this meet does happen, somethings need to be done, like rules need to be laid down from the start to ensure fans don't get screwed, to ensure future swap meet beyond 2008.

Great idea! I hope to see this happen! One thing I'd be worried about is theft though...:\ Unfortunately, theft happens. I need to see a more detailed picture of what we're trying to do here, please.
Will not be attending ;-;

Much like in Scenerio #1, people brought things in and put them in a group deemed there own on the tables near the front of the room under the watchful eyes of the person or people in charge of the swap meet. Then if person 'A' saw something that caught their eye in person 'B''s group. Person A would see if there was anything they had that person 'B' was interested in their group of stuff.
Or in some cases something like the following example:
Person A wants to trade something Person "B" has.
Person B doesn't want anything person "A" has yet something Person "C" Has catches their eye.
Person C doesn't want anything person " B" has yet something Person "A" has catches their eye.
So they resolve that that the three of them will trade so.
Person A gets item B
Person B gets item C
Person C gets item A
One reason I've been thinking about this is theres one dealer whose been in the dealers room the past couple of years. Whose website states at thier booth you can trade in items for use towards new items and they'll destroy any bootlegs or fansubs you turn in no questions asked. Any items turned in will either be sold used on their website (that is when its actually running properly) or donated to a local library.
Yet I think most of us would get more out of seeing who gets are stuff than just getting credit.

Can't believe I didn't see this before. I like it, I think it's a pretty good deal, the few concerns I had were pretty much addressed already in the thread, so no need for me to mention them again
That said, my only concern is, that a small room might be well, too small. Since I can imagine that there are alot of people that have things that they wouldn't mind trading away, since to quote nbc "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you!"
So just either pm me, or contact me privately in general and we can start the process of getting this scheduled.
And for everyone else, let's keep the ideas coming! I know I don't want to squander the potential of year 11.

How big does everybody think would be big enough? If this were to go through the space needed would have to not infridge on the space of say the Dealer's Area, Artist Alley, or the Car Show.
Plus who all would be willing to help out in making this possible/ who all would be bring titles to trade?
Also, it would probably be a good idea if maybe for some of the more mature titles( that is if anyone were to bring any.) to maybe check ids. *Sorry it's the school teacher assistant side of me.* I mean we really wouldn't want some underaged convention goer get a hold of something they shouldn't be able to get in the dealers room.

From what I remember, is the room used for security/HQ on the basement (aka International Level) floor level this past con? Here is the link to the floor plan for the hotel for reference: <http://ohare.hyatt.com/hyatt/images/hotels/chiro/floorplan.pdf>
If so, that might work. But the size of the room would depend on how many people pre-opt to bring stuff to swap. If many people bring things in and the basement rooms (like Narita, DaVinci, Capital,..) are too small, then we would need bigger rooms like on the first floor (the floor with the main entrance).
Otherwise, I think the big space adjacent to the car show and official con store would be good and tables could be set up there. Setting up close to the dealer's this time, if this eventually occurs, could catch the attention of people as they walk toward the dealer/artist's area and stop by. In turn, this might very well increase awareness of this event for the future and increase the size of the swap meet in 2009 and so forth.
If this occurs, I'm in. I got some things, not a lot, but a sizable portion. I'm also in on making this happen.

Also, the thought passed my mind if it was to happen near the dealers room/ car show/ Artist Alley , would we need tables or could those who wanted to "Booth/Table", in true swap meet/ Flea market style, just put down blankeys or something in riows with enough room for aisles for easy movement.
Another question is will there be a fee or will it be included in the regular badge price.
Ok so theres at least seven of us who are interested in doing this.

As you said it's all out on a table and such. You'd need IRT involvement for something like this I personally think. But I'm not panel staff so I don't know really how they run things of this nature.

"Location"
The car show/dealers' area seems to be the best area due to the large space and crowd of people, but it may be hard to look after your stuff. On the other hand, a room may be good since it's enclosed, but may not get high exposure of people.
I think we should have tables since swapping on the ground seems kind of sub-standard.
"Fee"
At a NY anime megaswap, there was a $2 entry fee. While at Yaoi-Con, they sell $10 a table.
"Items"
Anything anime-related (DVDs, VHS tapes, manga, books, magazines, toys, posters, electronics) except for the following items – no bootlegs, no weapons, no food or drinks. ADULT MATERIALS MUST BE COVERED AND ONLY SHOWN TO PEOPLE THAT CAN LEGALLY VIEW THEM (18+’s only, no minors)
"Duration"
1-3 hours on 1 day, maybe, since most of us have tons of other things to do.
"Other rules/tips/advices"
- Stay with your items. Label your stuff.
- Have may be 1-2 IRTs for the duration of the swap meet (preferably 1 who is knowledgeable on unlicensed things.)
Each trade will be negotiated individually between buyer and seller, although participants are encouraged to engage in bartering individual items in addition to selling for cash. The items put up for trade will not be labeled with fixed prices, and participants will come to mutually acceptable terms on their own. Participants may stay for all or part of the event, but will be responsible for collecting their untraded goods before leaving; abandoned goods will be confiscated at the end of the day. Adult-oriented materials will be traded in a cordoned-off area.
- (Optional) No cash changes hands. You may trade items for other items only.
- All trades are final.
- If you have many items, you should plan to bring a container (a bag, box, plastic bin, etc.), so you can keep your items secure. Watch your items carefully.
Your thoughts?

I'd be fine with no cash changes hands and just swap what you got. the rest of the optional sounds good. Most of what I have is already in a small rolling suitcase/Brief case thingy on wheels.
The people trading would stay with their stuff.
1-3hrs sounds good, 90mins to 2hrs on one day would probably be good enough to try it out.
A minor fee of around $2 or so wouldn't be bad.
One question is how many could fit at a table?
Which area sounds better to the mass? Near the Artist alley/Dealers room/etc.? or an enclosed room of good size?
In all truth, if it was done in a room someone could always make signs to direct the passersby to where it is.
Say did Yoai-con or NY animeswap mention how well their swapmeets went?

or this

That way, you can carry your trade items around with you (don't have to worry about having someone watch your stuff) and you can walk around looking at other people's stuff.
When finished, turn in your shoulder strap box and leave with your new swag in a separate bag.

I got the swap guidelines from 4 cons and the only info I can get on how well theirs went was Anime Boston. From Boston's forum postings, it sounds like its swap meet went well. People were able to get what they wanted and traded their things away. Some even gave away their stuff for the benefit of fellow fans instead of taking their own stuff back home [sounds like something I might do in this possible swap meet].
In addition, the more I read, the better it is that the swap meet should have no cash involved [unless someone wants your stuff bad, but that person has nothing you want]. This is a swap after all and involving money only invites complications.
I don't know how many swappers can fit in a table. Maybe 1-2 depending on how much stuff someone has.
BebopCola might be onto something. Personally, wearing it would make me feel like I'm selling cigars in a bar like in those old movies instead of swapping anime things. This would be a good idea. I was just wondering whether ACen would do something like this for us. If not, then it's up to swappers to come up with their own way to act as their own mobile trading post, like Mock Kappa's rolling suitcase. Tables might not be good after all.
Any other thoughts on how to display/swap your stuff with others easily while keeping an eye on your stuff?
As for location, I would prefer an enclosed room (that has high traffic outside the room; not in the basement or some far reach part of the hotel) over the open dealers' area.

Excel excel, hope you are still around, can you please tell me of the status of your suggesting this event to the forum mods?
I guess I'll be the first to list things that I'll bring to the swap meet if it takes place. It's small but it should be a good start. I'll certainly have more to bring, of course, since I'll add more as ACen gets closer.
Vision of Escaflowne DVD Vol. 5-6
Lupin 3 movie: Crisis in Tokyo DVD
Anime Insider, issue 49
Megumi Hayashibara music CDs: "Enfleurage" & "Sphere"
Slayers Try: Treasury BGM 2 music CD
Cowboy Bebop Vol. 3
Alien Nine DVD
I hope that by doing this is it'll allow others to see what each other have and start checking out what you might want to swap for and such by the time ACen rolls around. I'm getting all excited thinking about this

Quick question: will there be any rules on the conditions of the material i.e. manga? I happen to keep all of mine in a bin that's frequented by kids. It's not torn up or anything, but it may have some of that weird worn out look on the edges but still good on the inside.
A few things I want to point out that may be of concern to the staffers:
1. The adult only content may need it's own table.
2. Hopefully, the material being swapped is well within legal limits in the U.S. and Illinois state law.
3. An all swaps are final deals, so try to make sure things are kosher. Perhaps a portable dvd player for testing?
These are just ideas and stuff. Hopefully, there will be some final word soon. The last thing anyone needs/wants is drama.

Going by Illinois state law, if money changes hand then each participant must register with the Illinois Department of Revenue and collect and report sales tax and income tax. It is probably much simpler to strictly stick to a swap. See the Illinois Department of Revenue page at http://tax.illinois.gov/Individuals/Salesa...lated/fairs.htm

Roxy-That's a great idea. Didn't think about having a dvd player to ease the heart of those who are trading for dvds. You can't really tell whether dvds work well based on scratches, the size of them, and the location of the scratch and such.

Responding to the above paragraph, I don't think there should be rules on it since the bartering would work itself out. For example, if someone wants your Vol. 1-10 Bleach manga, but most of them have bent pages & dogears (and you want his Naruto DVD Seasons 1-2), he might offer you the first season instead, noting the conditions unless you throw in your Vol. 1-5 One Piece manga. It may not happen like this, but in the end, the deal would occur or not, depending on how bad he wants Bleach, how bad you want Naruto, how you two view the conditions, and other underlying factors.
