Honey crystallizes.... don't ask how I know that. *shifty eyes*

Gimme chocolate syrup any day! :D

That gets too smeary if it's warm, so I keep it in the fridge. If I want my chocolate hot, I just use the fudge sauce.

FALSE. Honey is awesome by itself.

Mmm... chocolate milk. I should see if that's what I want. And I need to stop eating these pecans--they're for the pies!

OBJECTION!

Honey is pure yuck by itself. But great with other things. (like how cheese is)

And save room for tommorow, so you can inflict MASSIVE DAMAGE to the food you'll be eating.

I fast the day before Thanksgiving and the day of....or is that just because I forget to eat in the rush of cooking? I forget.
My grandparents have no idea how I can shove so much food into myself that day and not be this little tubby ball of fat in any case. :D

Honey by itself...eehhhh...

That's the problem right there. I don't try and cook with it, I just eat it. Or put it in my tea. Or on a biscuit.

I can't fast while cooking, because I'm a taster. I essentially cook with my nose and mouth, because if it smells right, it should taste right.

Of course, I pass out from exhaustion after the marathon cooking and wake up to eat after the commotion has died down and everyone else is unconscious.

Woo!
Go opportunities!
I taste occasionally - depends on what I'm cooking. Mashed potatoes always need more salt (and I love me some mashed potatoes) but cheesy potatoes (kinda like potato au gratin, but more cheese and other...weird...ingredients I won't go into) you can't taste before cooking because all the stuff is still uncooked.
So, I guess it depends on the thing you're cooking if you're a taster.

Oooo - today, I'm making cookie dough batches for the Christmas Cookie bake-off at my house... Favorite cookies anyone? (not getting any! ninner!)
I LOVE my grandma's sugar cookie recipe (so...much...fat...) and these meringue cookies with chocolate chips in it. Three ingredients, yet so tasty...

The things they do to food to make them look pretty also render them pretty much inedible.
  • Burgers are put together and held in that "perfect stack" with pins
  • fruits and veggies are rubbed with petroleum jelly and are airbrushed or otherwise painted to make the water bead up on them perfectly and the color look perfect
  • ice cream is actually an artful blend of not-ice-cream-type things such as shortening and paint dyes
  • pizza toppings are cooked with a heat gun to get that "perfect cheese melt"
  • roast turkeys/chickens are pretty much cooked the bare minimum and painted to look like they are done to a perfect shade of brown. They are only cooked fully (again with the heat gun) on the part where it is to be cut.
I could go on... I read a book about it a while back ago when I was stuck in bed from a surgery. I'll see if I can find the title.

I'm pretty sure a lot of it is done by computers now, but that's how it was done historically.

Hey... they do it to make you want to eat it. In the end, it's about the bottom line.

Plus, the people who get paid to produce the food pretty much don't care about how it looks after it leaves their responsibility. It's like, "Hey, I got paid--your problem now."

I remember being told that milk has a blue tint on TV, so when you see cereal ads, that isn't milk.
It's glue.
I always gag when I see the person take a bite - ewww!
I hope it's not glue for that cut....:o

Usually the items to be consumed in a commercial are the real thing (considering that you have to factor in multiple takes/shots)that have been ideally arranged and filmed under strategic lighting and angles, but if it's something that is strictly being photographed, odds are it is very much less than edible.

I can think of a few things with a yellowish tint... ;)

Oh, I forgot about fake food technology--and Crate sells some of that!

Yeah, the most amazingly realistic food items are made of plastic. (Anyone who has been to Subway probably remembers seeing a fake party sub hanging from the ceiling)

Yeah, that's most likely how it's done today if the makers have the budget for it (plastic food props can get pretty expensive). If not, they can still use the old-school techniques.

At Mitsuwa, ordering is a lot easier because all the food on display is plastic and so delicious looking....
Yummy special salt pork ramen...

Hm... you're right! I forgot about those too!

They have plastic ramen on display? I never noticed that. I just recently finished sampling the one place where they sell the curry and okonomiyaki. I was planning on moving to the ramen next.

How is that curry place? I haven't gone to that one yet - I've been stuck at the ramen place because I seem to be a creature of habit.
If I like something, I stay for a long, long time.
But yeah - Japanese curry and Indian curry are way different in my experience and I can't quite place how... Of course, Indian is spicier, that's a given, but there's something else in Japanese curry that just tastes different.
I still love Indian lamb curry with a side of nan - pity I'm such a wimp that I can't even eat the mild stuff without running for a huge glass of milk to put out the flames. I shame my Texan heritage.

'Tis delicious. I'd very honestly say I can't pick a favorite.

So the salt pork ramen is good? I think I'll try that one first.

I'm so afraid to try real ramen since I grew up on the maru-chan pack. I love katsudon, though, best stuff ever!

Speaking of the fake food though, I think there's one magazine that prides itself on using real food in their pictures, I think it's Gourmet. I really want to take a class on food photography! I think I could have taken it next quarter/semester... I still don't know what my school goes by... but I'm too broke to afford school for the next year... :(

Just beware Chick - it's salt pork ramen. You're gonna need a drink while consuming the delicious.
But the pork is sooo good. It really melts in your mouth!
