Rots in abandoned fields
These idle hands inherit spoiled lands
As the hungry become the pigs
We reap (and) we sow

Robotech and Macross are two different series, the only thing they share are the animation for the first season.
Overall, the Robotech Masters saga is a low point in the series with the sloppy transitition from Macross to the new season, while the third part is worth watching.

End of the Circle in a nutshell: it really is all Minmei's fault. Literally.
Once you get done with all the episodes and novels, it should be 2010 and just in time for the live-action Robotech movie.

now you would get anime fans up in a rage if you tried to do a robotech but we didn't have cartoon network we didn't have adult swim we didn't have fan subs that anyone could just download. we didn't have the internet and those that did it was text. If you found a pace you could buy anime you had to choose the cheaper dub or the more expensive subtitled original Japaneses. then here comes robotech a continuing story that we hadn't seen before the characters developed their worlds changed you went thou 3 generations of a story. it got me into anime as it did for allot of other people its not something I can just turn my back on an go oh that was crap I should watch the 3 original shows.
was it edited into a new show and story line yes but I look back at it very foundly

Had Carl Macek tried to keep it exactly the way it was made in Japan, there would be no Robotech period. Macross was only 26 episodes long; American TV execs demand a show have at least 60-70 episodes to make it in syndication. Macek really didn't have a choice, but I think he did a good job--though I will agree that Southern Cross is the weakest of the four series.
The books are far and away better than the anime, IMHO.

It wasn't because of that, Macross 7 is too expensive to be brought over here, and really the story wasn't all that great, esspecially with the main VF being controlled by a guitar. DYRL has been in the US as a dub, but you can blame Clash of the Bionoids for it not being very well known, and trust me, that mockery of a dub did way more to damage Macross than Robotech, and really, the only reason why DYRL isn't getting a redub, and Zero isn't going to be seeing a release in the US anytime soon was because of a lawsuit a few years back due to a poorly written contract between Harmony Gold and Tatsunoko Studios (the studio that animated all three of the series that were turned into Robotech). Big West decided to get angry over Harmony Gold's claim of being the rights holders of Macross in the United States, and felt that it wanted more money. And to be completely honest, it's both companies fault that none of the other Macross series can be dubbed in the US, because Harmony Gold is stubborn, and Big West wants more money.

Actually, they slipped through because Harmony Gold didn't have any interest in the Macross rights at the time, and when they did, they tried suing Manga, which actually started this whole mess.

I'd recommend Bubblegum Crisis (original series, not the 2040 crime against humanity), Gunsmith Cats, Evangelion, and maybe the first three Inu-Yasha movies. Gunsmith Cats is the easiest, because it's only three eps long and you can get it for probably less than $15. Why it never caught on is beyond me. It's an 80s cop movie that's animated! It's even got a great car chase!
Oh yeah--Burn-Up Excess is great too, if you want stupid comedy and lots of boobage. Definitely a guy anime.

That's why I suggested the Inu-Yasha movies. They're actually of much better quality than the series, which tends to be hit or miss. (Some of the "filler" episodes are better than the "plot" episodes--the fillers are usually slapstick, which Takahashi is best at.) The swordfighting in the third movie is excellent.
BGC was the first series I really got into, and was the first anime soundtrack I bought. Yeah, it's 80s big hair, but who cares?

The big 80's hair is part of what makes old school stuff so special. Especially because you don't see that much anymore.

Yep. If Sylia has short hair, you have the right one. If she has long grey hair and sounds like she's zoned on quaaludes, then you've got the 2040 travesty.
