Smoking? Any idea on whether it's allowed?

I understand the smoking ban for public places like hotels and restaurants.... but bars? I'm no smoker, but banning smoking in bars is just... dumb. A bar isn't a bar without the smoke....seriously. =/ Bars are going to lose a lot of business imo.

Yes, bars have argued this issue over and over. In some places where ther are bans, if the place can prove a large loss in revenue because of the ban they can get a waiver.

I go out to a non-smoking bar all the time and it is almost always crowded and packed even with smokers! The smokers just go outside to smoke.

And I have gone from the non smoking bar which was crowded to a smoking bar that was empty. So honestly I don't see very many bars losing as much business as they think. Yes some may lose a little bit of business. But do people really go to bars just to smoke and drink? I think most people go to bars to hang out with friends, watch the game etc. Smoking and drinking are just a nice addition.

Myself and a few friends were curious as to the ruling on this. Anyone know if Rosemont has included themselves in that complete no smoking ban? If not, I have another question[s].

If smoking IS allowed in the town itself, are there designated areas in the hotel to smoke, or do people just have to step outside? I would imagine [especially with the rennovations] that they would not allow smoking anywhere in the building ...

I've just gotta ask now so I'm not getting smoking tickets or anything like that during the con! x_x

FYI, the Embassy Suites across the street is a completely non-smoking hotel, as are all Marriots - Residence Inn, Courtyards, and Fairfield Inns. I believe that the number of smoking rooms at the Hyatt is a very small percentage of the available rooms.

I also hope the 2 crazy guys come with their hookahs.....I hung out with them last year at ACEN and also at Reactor....if they bring the cappuccino flavored tobacco, I'll be a happy man

2? ahem, there are more then 2 of us, we are a group of an original 5 and growing.

lol, but don't worry we will always be there, the ban is a bit troubling as it was at reactor this year but we worked around it... kinda.

WE WILL FIND A WAY.

we're working on a more organized system of gathering our fans and followers. I'll let you know when that is going.

So, i know this thread is more about actual smoking, and i didn't want to post a new thread about smoking, so i figure i could ask here.

My question is, with the "no smoking" ban indoors, can I use a cigarette as a prop for a costume, as long as it is not lit ever?

I figure I can, but i wanted to verify. Thanks

Actually, if you shop around, you can find these extremely cool prop cigarettes that even have a cherry that sorta glows when you inhale-- they look very cool indeed, and there's no ambiguity about the rules.

(I'm not sure where this would fall into the rules otherwise, but I thought I'd just make the suggestion now.)
There is a slight flaw in my character.

Cigarettes will be acceptable as long as they are not lit.

If you must smoke...

By Illinois law, you can't smoke anywhere indoors (including restaurants and bars). To smoke you must step outside, at least 15 feet away from the door.

Prop cigarettes or unlit cigarettes are acceptable, provided they remain unlit.

Ok, so I figure I should let all the smokers on this thread have the heads up...

Being a smoker and a staff member on IRT we are the "example setters" for all you others... ;) The best 3 places to smoke are as follows:

1. The balcony area on the Lobby Level. This is out where the old pool used to be, and just past where the IRT Pen is.
2. Just below the balcony area on the Lower Lobby Level. Same place, one floor down.
3. The doors just outside of the Ballrooms.

These are the best places to go to smoke. I would also like to state that the Main doors (with the HUGE revolving door) are NOT a smoking area. That is where the large turnaround is and the hotel asks us every year to keep the smokers away from those doors (not to mention there are signs pointing you over to the other doos in front of the Ballrooms! ;) )

Also, all 3 of these locations have trashcan/ashtray combos for all to use.
Enjoy your smokes!

Darn, I missed that one. Sure would have been amusing to see their feeble attempt before it was removed.

@Mika, Thanks for the list of areas for the Hyatt, but what about the designated areas around the convention center for smoking?

Generally the spot outside the doors not to the main lobby but to where the smaller meeting rooms are (basically closer to River Rd than the main lobby doors but still in that covered drive area) is where I always see the smokers. I recall seeing signs right by the main big doors that say no smoking (by where there's red carpet and is the handicapped drop off), so it would have to be that other spot. Personally I don't really like it because it's difficult to get far enough away from the smoke without risking getting run over. :( I never used to care but after a particularly nasty bout of bronchitis a few years ago, even someone smelling strongly of smoke can start to affect my asthma.

While it's not finalized, it's possible that this area may be blocked off for convention staff only, due to the high number of internal departments that have their headquarters in that area.
