My fellow gamers, my name is J. aka UltpervJiraiya or simply Jiraiya around my friends. I am currently doing a research on fighting games and posting a survey to other fighting game players. If you are interested in participating in the survey, this is how you reply:

- Your current age, gender, and nationality/ethinicity.
- Your first/oldest/earliest fighting game you've played and where?
- What/why/how you got into fighting games.
- Your current favorite fighting game that you're really good at.

For example: (this is my response)
- 26 Male Filipino
- Urban Champion in Famicom back in '86 from the Philippines.
- Its my way of venting out and love the feel of the competition of wits, skill, strategy.
- King of Fighters XI, Capcom Vs. SNK2, Samurai Spirits II

If you are in the Mid-west area and know/able to go to Anime Central '07 (www.acen.org) in Rosemont, IL, I will be hosting "The Fighting Game Panel"; discussing a wide range of topics regarding about fighting games and also co-hosting with Cactusmomma in her SNK panel. Also coordinating (possibly) with BakaOrochi in the fighting game tourney in the convention. So if any of you are able to go, that would be great to meet all of you and maybe play casual games. It will be fun.

I will be using the result of this survey in my discussion and to those who participated will be greatly appreciated and I will include your forum name (unless you want to let me use your real name) in the research paper and will be credited in the compilation. In the future, I will do a compilation of my discussion and will be posted online (I will let you guys know where I will post it). And to those would/can come, maybe you can help me host the panel as well (doing interviews on who can host the panel with me including with my friends), if you're interested please let me know ASAP.

Well, I thank all of you who are willing to participate in this survey.
And hopefully I would get to see you any (if not all) in ACEN'07. ^_^
Thanks again and keep on fighting!

Haha what's up man. You should post this at SRK, TZ, DL, and other sites too.

-27, Male, Korean
-Karate Champ in 1986, friend had an arcade machine in his basement in Morton Grove, IL. I sucked at it (but honestly, was it possible to actually get GOOD at that game?).
-Brother told me about an awesome new fighting game called "Street Fighter II" (World Warrior). He described all the characters, how the game was played, and the impossibility of the Dragon Punch. After that, it's history.
-Really good at? I think I'm more decent than anything, at least at Project Justice, KoF 2000 (before Vanessa was nerfed, boo), Samurai Shodown/Spirits, Jojo's Venture/Bizarre Adventure...can't think of too much else.

22 Male Filipino
Mortal Kombat at my cousin's house
My cousin showed it to me and it looked cool at the time. A good way to 'beat up' siblings/cousins.
Don't really play fighting games too much anymore, but the last one I played and beat was Soul Calibur 2 on the Gamecube.

-23 Female White/Caucasian
-Eternal Champions for the Sega Genesis in IL in '93
-I like being able to play games with other people and fighting games are usually the best multi-player games out there, and for people that arn't good at video games, you can tell them to mash buttons.
-My best game currently is Super Smash Bros. Melee

-28 Female/African American

Street Fighter II at Hollywood Park. I think there gone now. It was so long ago
I just played it on a whim and i was spending my tokens like crazy! For some reason I love fighting games for the killer moves and special techniques. I always beat my sister in that game and in many others I still have like Rival Schools, Tekken, MVC2, Guilty Gear X and Soulcaliber.

I dont play them as much as I use to but ill play Guilty Gear every now and then

Male 25 white
Street Fighter 2 at the local arcade was my first.
I enjoy the chess match of fighting games. The predicting what your opponent is gonna do and countering it.
Best fighting games now? Naruto 4, Soul Calibur (any of them)

1) 21, female, caucasian

2) First thing I ever played was Mortal Kombat, about a million years ago

3) I like fighting games because of the sheer math of it all, the strategy and timing and tension and mind games involved, the fact that there is far, far more to it than "mashing buttons"

4) Right now I'm playing Street Fighter 3rd Strike (Yang), Guilty Gear Slash (Zappa) and King of Fighters (Kula, Vice, Whip)

And if anyone is in the freaking Grand Rapids, MI area and wants to play some of these games, hit me up before I DIE.
Thanks to Time Mage, we did Super-Job! This is the way!

psst, i'm over here

- 22, Male, Whitey
- I remember playing Mortal Kombat when I was 9 or 10 at the arcade portion of a roller rink on a school field trip.
- My earliest fighting game memories were Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II, Primal Rage and Time Killers at various non-arcades (hotel with my family or at an indoor pool). I didn't enjoy swimming or roller skating so I played games.
- Ultimate Jump for the DS
I wish I had something clever to put here :-(

- What/why/how you got into fighting games.
- Your current favorite fighting game that you're really good at.

27, Male, Filipino
My first was this fighting game on the NES, but I forgot the name of it. It used to be a short monthly comic in gamepro I think, back in 1988. If that doesn't count, the next fighting game I can remember is Street Fighter II. I used to play a lot in the arcades a lot. Either at Tilt in Lakeside Mall or 5 star bowling lanes in Michigan. I used to frequent Atlantic City every summer to play it while my family goes to gamble as well.
I got into fighting games because I guess I enjoy competing with people. Its more fun if they are better than me.
The fighting game I'm known for right now is Tekken 5: DR. I'll probably be at the May'n event for that game. Hopefully it doesn't coincide with acen.

-30, Male, African American
-Street Fighter 2 after school on in a small grocery store thats used to be on Pulaski and Grand. I would go there after school when i was in high school to play Street fighter 2.

-I got into it because of the competiton and i guess the excitement of it. I went to the VERY first midwest Street Fighter tournament back in the day (1993, yeah im old) ever since I wanted to get better and be the best and been playing fighting games ever since. Plus with my friends from versis video game club made me keep playing and stay competitive.
-Virtua Fighter 5, Street Fighter 3 3rd strike, Capcom vs Snk 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Virtua Fighter 4 Evo, Soul Calibur 3

-26/Male/Indian (Asian)
-Street Fighter II (SNES), at a friend's house in 5th grade
-It was really fun. The only other "fighting" games that I'd played up 'til that point were wrestling games for the NES, and SFII just blew me away.
-Working on learning KoF:2006 (Nagase, Mignon); Rival Schools, Soul Calibur 2, Guilty Gear, and Last Blades 1&2 are on my list for favorites, though.

On an unrelated note, kinda surprised to see someone else here from Morton Grove.

People are wondering why ask "Why do you like fighting games?" and "How did you got into fighting games?"
I've come across a lot of people who call themselves gamers and even hard-core gamers but do not consider fighting games as videogames at all.... Arcade-style, platformers, swords and sorcery adventures, action are considered videogames by these so called hard-core gamers, which I don't hold it against them nor its wrong... just trying to figure out whether you're an all-around gamer, half-time fighter, or a full-fledge fighting game fan.

Gotta post here despite it's oldness cuz I saw it in you sig and couldn't resist... >>
Plus someone else posted today. xP

- 16/Female/Hispanic
- I was deprved of video games until I was about 11 and my mom's overprotectiveness causes her to ban fighting games. >> So it wasn't until 2003 when my cousin's brought over Guilty Gear XX#Reload and I instantly fell in love.
- I just played that game and got crazy high on it. Plus I finally found a genre I was good at and I just love the feeling of really perfecting something. Plus when you start on a new fighter you can get away with button mashing for a while. I also generally refuse to play anything but fighting games much to the dismay of those around me. <3
- I'm generally alright with anything that's 2D though specifically I'd say Guilty Gear and King of Fighters games. I really need to get a console version of Melty Blood though since I've fare decently with my terrible keyboard skills and would probably be good if I got to play it with a controller. >>
Oops can't afford to go to ACEN anymore! >:

- 24, male, white.
- Mortal Kombat II, a friend brought it over to my house. I think I was 10 at the time, so the novelty of the blood/gore somehow overrode the fact that the gameplay was incredibly shallow.
- I'm rather competitive by nature, so aside from continually beating my high scores in top-down shoot-em-ups and puzzle games, I dig fighting games when I have human competition, just to see who's the best.
- I'd have to say Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, though I can also hold my own in Melty Blood: Act Cadenza.
