I was shocked to find no topic on one of the bast manga's ever made. Battle Royale is 15 volumes of tear-jerking, mind blowing, and some of the greatest deaths imaginable!

I love it, it is on the top of my manga shelf and it freaking stays there.

Anyone else wanna talk about it? Fav characters, deaths, situations?

PEOPLE DYING AWESOME! I grew up in the 80s-everyone-screwing-dies anime era much different from this shonen dominated one. I have to check this manga out!

Sadly an American version is to be made. :(
I have no trust in the producer Roy Lee(The Ring, The Grudge)
Also, I think the director will be John Singleton(2Fast 2Furious), I don't have anything to confirm it, since it is just a rumor, so don't hold me to it. Hopefully we will get a different person to direct the film.

I think it will be kind of hard getting the movie out. So far the movie will, or should, be given a hard R rating.

The Manga does not have the same slick sense of humor, and acts like Battle Royale is a serious, dramatic epic and not a twisted black comedy. Really thought it went to far to make people disgusted without any real payoff.

An American version COULD work.

Roger Corman should direct.

Jason Lee should play the Teacher, who will be obviously less threatening (but threatening enough) and more sadistic.

Remember, Battle Royale is a hilarious exploitation film, like Deathrace 2000 or Hollywood Blvd, or any Roger Corman film. Or Troma film. If the American director realizes how funny it's supposed to be, then it can be done.

Some movies just should not be remade. Cuz they will either twist it or dumb it down. Im hoping that its all it is a rumor and just that lol.

I heard about the movie on www.upcominghorrormovies.com and i won't really mind it if it follows the manga well. It should be like a 3 hour epic flick or even a 2 part 2.5 hour movie. That would be great cause in the original, you just didn't get the sense of an character except for Shuuya. Also, it needs better casting then the first one. I didn't like it at all that Kawada looked like he was from Menudo and that Crazy Kill Boy was all frantic about everything and not ver "robotic" as my friend at work says.

And they had better put in that fight with Sugimura and Kazuo or i'll be freaking PISSED!!

Or how about they use the same premise, with totally different characters with striking similarities to the original's characters, and not follow the manga but have a bold new vision as opposed to telling the same story once again?

My American Battle Royale, Presented by Me.

It is America, in the not too distant future. America has become a nation of the fearful and the paranoid. There is mass panic everywhere. To settle the tension, America turns Facist. Becoming a dictatorship, they ban all forms of free thought they deem destructive. Certain forms of Music and Movies. And of course, how to keep the youth in line? A radical idea- The Battle Royale. Kids who are found to be out of line according to the standards (Including our Hero, a Punk rock playing Rock worshipping Shuya equivalent), Violent Gang Members, and even Teenagers whose poetry went a little too deep are put in a special class that is shipped to an Island, where they are told to fight until the last man standing.

Keeping with the themes of the book, and the Atmosphere of the movie, but not being lame enough to try to base it exactly from existing media. The Teacher, a happy family man, an easy going guy, but with a sadistic streak when he is put in charge of the class. His insanity is his way of coping with what he is doing, and he becomes more insane as the movie goes on.

Expect blood, gore, and bare breasts in the most hilarious exploitation film of the decade.

Yeah, I wish. I could write a damn good screenplay for this, and produce it on a budget of 500,000 dollars.

HA!! lmao, j/k. It would be just like The Grudge or The Ring though. Jap made American. I'll pass. I'd perfer it to be redone as best it could be to the manga which i think is the true form of the story.

I would love the true director to come back with like Frank Miller or something.....but alas, he's dead. :( *sadness*

good thread though guys :) keep it up!

Movie: Lighthouse scene since it was a Resevoir Dogs moment.

Book: Takako Vs. Niida, it has been a while since I read that book, but that part has stuck with me. Shame, I used to remember how everyone died and who killed who.

Manga:I honestly don't know.... Not that it is hard to choose, I just don't know.

It's an American Movie. It has an American Cast and American Characters. End of story.

The Grudge sucked just as bad in japan as it did in America. It flopped in Japan. Nobody liked it. The sequel was made for ignorant Americans who can see japanese crap and think it's pure gold. Sorry, it's true. The American Ring was not as good as the japanese, but neither were anything mind blowing.

The Manga wasn't close to the original. i've read the book, the Manga was a humorless adaption of the book. The movie was radically different too. Why is an American Version unable to take liberties?

We are keeping with the theme, with the atmosphere, just making characters and settings American. Shuya WAS the same character I am describing in the book. Instead of Classic Rock I changed it to a more contemperary punk rock to better fit in with the new scenerio. Because if America had become a fascist dictatorship, you wouldn't worship Bruce Springsteen, you'd worship The Clash. That's my belief. Shuya was in love with Rock Music. He was a punk, a rebel. I'm not going to change him.

Though i created a game that had a different selecting method, the reasons have remained the same. So, what's the problem there?

And, of course, the teacher. Well, I'm sorry, in the book he was just pure evil. In the movie, the made several failed attempts to humanize him. I want to do what Fukasaku tried but couldn't do: Make him somewhat sympathetic. This is about people who, under pressure, lose their humanity. Not about people who never had that. We have two people who are like that already. We don't need a third.

Maybe you just don't get the idea of keeping with the same themes, same atmosphere, but making changes. It has to be done. You make a remake with all japanese characters and a japanese settings, people will look at you like you are crazy. If you wanted to see a japanese movie, wouldn't you go see one? No, this is an AMERICAN version, and my idea is superior. Because I am not an idiot and I understand the media better then you do. I am a scholar of the exploitation film. Exploitation films are my passion.

Well first off, Blow me jackass. I don't care if you are a scholar of the freaking dude who wrote it, don't assume you're smarter than me just cause you don't understand my comment.

You may understand the freaking media, but I'm a better writer and if you did write your stupid little screen play, not only is it a rediculious adaptation of a great story, it's just plain stupid to assume that it would be well recieved by those who truely love it. If you re-made Gundam to be more american or more modern, do you think that everyone who is a die hard fan would jump in the way of traffic to see it? NO! Same with things like The Grudge or the ring. The only movie in recent history that came close to that kind of level was The Departed. And you know what, you're no where near the writer that I am and I'm no where near the guy who did that.

Second of all, I freaking agreed with you that it would be cool to see an American version made with some vision or artsy feel behind it. So think before you shove your foot in your mouth bud.

And don't think you're freaking supierior cause you read the damn book. Guess what, if you looked at my shelf, you'd see the full series of manga, a copy of both movies, and a very very worn book with "Battle Royale" barely legable on the spine. So shove off!

Wow...sorry LeeVsGaara but that whole, 'I am superior,' idea really isn't needed, especially in this forum. Also, KakashiVegas, you shouldn't really gone off the handle, just calmly explained the whole deal kind of like I did. All in all, we can talk about what we would do with the screenplay, but it wouldn't make much of a difference, we aren't going to even be part of the whole project, unless a miracle happens or one of us gets casted as an extra.

Just trying to keep the peace really.

Sorry about the whole arrogance thing, I felt it was necessary to make KakashiVegas snap like the whiney little fanboy/girl he/she is. Somebody who doesn't understand why an American movie has to have American Characters, and be set in America. Unfortunately, fanboys don't understand that notion.

See, I'm working on the Fan Film "Lee vs. Gaara" and, by the way, my opinions do not reflect those of the Director, producer, ect. But I've had to deal with this obnoxious fan complaining that we have our dialog in English and not Japanese. Fanboys don't understand that when you bring something to America, changes need to be made.

I mean, Battle Royale would HAVE to be set in America. The characters would HAVE to be American. We HAVE to appeal to American sensibilities. If they wanted to make a japanese movie, they'd go to screwing Japan.

Yeeeeah...if they were to remake this movie, it would be with an American cast and all that. Would seem a bit awkward if that cast happened to be placed in Japan.
Either way, I hope they dont remake the movie.
I didn't like the movie much in the first place xD When I watch it I just laugh cause it's so...I dunno it seems so fake. The same emotions that came from the book don't show up in the movie. At least that was my initial reaction.
That's what I get for reading the book first.
I still watch it for kicks though cause I like the plot xP

As for the manga....
It's pornpornporn! It is not plastic wrapped for violence!!! It's wrapped so the young childrenz don't see naked ladies!!
There was not really any need for the nakedness.
Completely unnecessary.
However, the manga came closer to the book (or at least the first 5 or so books did, I never finished) than the movie does.
Possible future cosplays:
[Nyuu] of Elfen Lied
[Melfina] of Outlaw Star
Neogrotesque[Kirito] of Pierrot
Alibi [Aki] of SID

No, he was not acting like a fanboy, at all, he just said he would like it to be like the book was. If that makes a person a fanboy, then I would gladly say that I am.

On another note, being called a fanboy was never supposed to be a bad thing, it is just that idiots make it a bad thing. fnaboys/girls are supposed to be people that are deep fans, but idiots go out and ruin the whole word. Which is why a lot of people don't like anime(along with personal taste and elitists).

Also, they might not shoot the Battle Royal Project (if it even is made) in America, sometimes you have to go somewhere else in order to film. Like how Scorsese had to shoot most of the film in New York so that it would be cheaper, even though it was supposed to take place in Boston. Just because it is an American movie doesn't mean it has to be shot on American soil, yes the setting would say somewhere in America, but it could be somewhere else, y'know? Hey, they might switch it from being an island to being a urban setting, like where Kawada fought in the last game. As for American actors, it would have to have american actors, but we don't know if they will have a diversity of students(whites, mexicans, blacks maybe?)

Thats what you have to face through in that business, Gans has said in an interview once that he has to try his hardest with Silent Hill, if he were to make it a wreck, then most likely he would have been shot in the street. Yes, he was joking around, but I bet if you look around enough you will find a lot of idiot fanboys complaining about every little thing and I bet he has read those comments too.

P.S.-Sorry if I talk about Gans a lot, I am a true Silent Hill fanboy, I am able to listen to other people's theories and opinions and respect them, unlike SH Elitists that shun you and SH Idiot Fanboys that don't understand anything about the game.

Oh yeah, remember when Kawada dies in the film? His pants seem to be a little..off.

Thank you for being level headed and defending my views from that close minded jerk. If he has such a big problem with someone dissagreeing with him, then all I have to say to Lee vs. Gara

I'll see you at ACEN. If you wanna be a jerk, do it to my face.

Like someone said after the funeral slaughter in WoW,

"Anyone can be a *beep* from behind a keyboard. People with true courage behind what they say will do it without one."

End of disscusion. New topic.

Appearantly there is a T.V. show in some country, which I can't remember. I also heard the rumor for the American Battle Royale movie, particularly that New Line Cinema(SP?) will be producing it though they don't have the rights to make it.

I say, instead of a new movie, there should be a T.V. show of an older class fighting, but make it like the show 24(no I don't watch 24 so don't ask) with each hour being an hour in the actual 3 day countdown. Also, I would like that show to follow all characters instead of just 2 or 3. Maybe they could even make one about Kawada Shugo's past thats a little bit more in-depth!

Also, I've seen and own both movies, read all of the manga(own vols 1 and 2), and own the book(didn't finish it because I lent it to a friend who was interested but never got into it).

Have you guys read the Wikipedia stuff about the movies? Some interesting stuff like how that Quintin Terintino(SP?) guy was asked to be the President of the U.S. for the second movie and how a few movies and shows have references like Shaun of the Dead.

That would actually be really cool. Since at the beginning of the manga it hinted at them living like hour to hour, that would be a really cool concept.

It would be like Lost mixed with 24.........i suposse since i don't watch either :P.
I perfer south park and Family Guy.

Trivia, really fun to read at times, actually the best one was that the lighthouse scene was inspired by Tarintino's Reservoir Dogs
'back in the day, if a shirt is off in the anime...the real fight is starting.'

"Does it make ice cream?"
"NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

That link is included at the botton of the Wikipedia page for the first film.

Also, read about Brian Wells. Interesting stuff, especially how it was a basis for several crime based shows such as CSI: Miami.

All of these negative posts towards each other and the ideas of a remake, make me sick. Seriously guy/girls adaptations are natural things, so what? The only way you can hate something is by trying it first and let me be the first to say, lets let them run with it and see what happens.

Sorry to say though, an american film doesn't mean American actors and "American" settings, look at Casablanca. It's on the top 100 movies of all time by IMD yet the setting isn't America, it's Africa.

Also, movies get remade, it's life. The new Will Smith movie coming out titled I Am Legend is a remake of a movie called Omega Man. Though I loved the original I feel that this new movie can take the idea and progress it into something extraordinary. Hell I even liked the movie The Condemned featuring Steve Austin, yes it was a rip-off of BR completely especially with the isolated location and explosive location devices.
