What I mean how have we as a Forum helped those who are utterly clueless in finding the right gift for the Anime/Manga fan in their life.

For example:
A couple days ago I was in a Borders picking up the latest copy of Tsubasa and the lady in line ahead of me starts asking the cashier about something drawn by an artist she refered to as Annebell that she couldn't find. The cashier mentions to her that she might want to try the Japanese Graphic Novel section. In the time it took the lady to ask the cashier where it was I had walked over to the section and got her attention. After talking with the lady for a few mintues , I found out the high school her daughter goes to has some type of all year secret santa thing and the daughter had drawn the name of a senior goth girl who is into anime and vampires. Over the course of 15/20 minutes I suggested to her Hellsing, Trinty Blood, Vampire D, Moon Phase , xxxHolic, and Boogiepop giving a quick overview of each, what I enjoyed about them, and whether I would suggest them or not for a gift to a high school senior goth girl. The lady choose Moon Phase vol. 1 as her safe first bet with thoughts of coming back for Vampire Hunter D later on. After noticing the word 'anime' on the back cover, she said that it was looking for having miss hearing anime as annebell. She then thanked me for helping her and said she was glad that she had run into someone like me. I wished her good luck in the future after she got back in line and bought the book.

I have helped many people out when they do not know what anime to get for someone. Be it at a store when a person is looking lost in the anime section. That or when they come up to me when I'm looking at a manga or anime myself.

Though people could be more knowing, lol I remember when I was younger my uncle went to get me some anime of x-day gift.....he asked the person for a anime that was for a kid. Well my uncle I guess did not get the anime he gave was ...well not exactly for kids. He gave my uncle non-other then Ranma 1/2. Strange thing being my uncle did not say anything or did not notice the fact that there where pictures of Bra's on one of the VHS covers. It was so funny, though I did not say anything to him about it as he had been so happy about getting an anime that "kid friendly" that I could not say anything.

I taught a college course on anime for two years, and I'm hoping to do another one this summer.

The first time I taught it, it was to a group of people whose sole experience with anime was one or two episodes of Pokemon they had caught flipping channels and maybe a Miyazaki flick or two. I had one student who considered herself more or less otaku (she was a Fruits Basket fan). Also interestingly, I had a Japanese exchange student in the course, who, besides being polite enough not to correct my rotten Japanese, actually said he learned more about anime with me than he would have in his home country. Now that's a big compliment.

The second time I taught it, the class was mostly otaku. Two of the students were otaku of the kind that the word was originally intended for in Japan--fanatics who didn't shower, lived in their parents' basement, could tell you the blood type of every Sailor Scout but not who the Vice President of the United States is, and generally were creepy. Hey, I've seen a lot at ACen and elsewhere, but one girl was hyperactive and one guy...well, I'm a cosplayer myself, but when he brings in six different sailor fuku, sealed in plastic, and treats them like the Holy Grail...it worries you.

Funny thing was, the two or three people who were "Toonami Whores" (seen only anime on Cartoon Network) got solid A's out of the course, while the creepy guy scored a C (his writing left a bit to be desired) and the creepy girl failed (she stopped showing up for class when she realized we weren't spending all of it on shojo anime).

This summer's going to be interesting. I don't live in a college town anymore, but a kind of a redneck farming community. There's a huge amount of anime to be had here (the only place I've seen with a better selection is actually ACen), so obviously there's an otaku underground here somewhere.

I tell people to keep away from any form of hentai or animes with underage school girls in it with skirts with the total of 2 inches long, so not to wreck their moral soul and send them down a horrid twisted path.

The best thing you can do for people not into anime or manga is to make sure they avoid it entirely and never get addicted to the drug...

How Have You Help Those Who Are Clueless To The World Of Anime/manga.

I drive around in my car, lure them with candy and promises, tie them up, drive them to my house, tie em to a chair with their eyelids taped open and force them to watch it. Kinda like that brainwashing scene in the show Lost. Works everytime ;)

Sounds good, but you should try a deserted warehouse. Harder to trace you that way. Also, you should avoid showing them Battle Skipper or Excel Saga. You ever try to clean up an exploded brain pan?

If I am at a place like Boarders when I am reading I normally try to listien to people conversaitions and if they arn't sure about some thing, then I apporch them. As far as people I know goes, I make them watch random anime and see what they think. I'm sooo happy with myself that my brothers are actully watching Bleach with interest now.

Yeah, every time I need a weekend off for a convention ^^. Every time they look just as confused and when they asked. When you show them pictures though it's funny. "THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE AT THIS THING?!"

I even wear my con badges up there.

show them the different sections of the store where we keep wallscrolls, cosplay outfits/accesories, and show them areas that we separated by series (Naruto, Bleach, FF, etc). Or send them to the front and let them wander around all the Sanrio stuff...

I had friends who thinks anime is like animated porn lol. They don't understand that there are a lot of different kinds of anime. You have to have them watched it so they would understand.

Just don't start them off with Angel of Darkness or Urotsukidoji and you'll be fine.

This isn't really clueless but, I have a friend that isn't into anime as much as me, but I convinced her to some to Matsuricon with me last year. She came to the yaoi panel to see what all the fuss was about. Now she wants more!! She's coming to ACen with me this year expecting not too much. She's in for a big surprise. X3 She might even cosplay!
